Systems and methods implementing a resonance circuit, including an avalanche photodiode, in which a resonance frequency of the resonance circuit is matched with the frequency of a dynamic biasing signal of the avalanche photodiode, can be used in a variety of applications. In various embodiments, a method for blocking and/or compensating current injection associated with the parasitic capacitance of APDs operated under dynamic biasing may be substantially realized by the matching of the resonance frequency of a resonance circuit including the avalanche photodiode with the frequency of an applied dynamic biasing signal. Additional systems and methods are described that can be used in a variety of applications.

Resonance avalanche photodiodes for dynamic biasing

A technique for classifying lesions as malignant or benign is disclosed. The technique can include: cooling an area of skin including a lesion of a patient to initiate a warm-up process; receiving a temporal sequence of thermal images of the area of skin representing a thermal recovery of the area of skin, the temporal sequence of thermal images generated by an infrared camera; generating a temporal profile of the thermal recovery based on the temporal sequence of thermal images; analyzing temporal statistical properties of the temporal profile; determining a malignancy probability that the lesion is malignant based on an analysis of the temporal profile, wherein the determining includes extracting one or more statistical features based on continuous-time stochastic signals in the sequence of thermal images; and classifying the lesion based on the malignancy probability.

Methods and systems for detecting cancer

Method and apparatus for maximizing the output of a dynamically biased avalanche photodiode (APD). The output of the APD is amplified. A feedback loop comprising a phase shifter measures the RF power of the amplified output and adjusts the phase of the AC signal which is used to dynamically bias the APD until the output power is maximized. The AC signal is also split into out of phase signals, thereby substantially canceling out the bias current injected into the APD output, leaving only the desired amplified optical output signal. The monitoring and tuning of the AC dynamic bias can eliminate phase drift over time, as well as other non-ideal effects that can occur, such as those due to temperature changes or device aging effects.

Control circuits for dynamically biased avalanche photodiodes

Apparatus and methods comprise examination of a subject using images of the subject. The images can provide a non-invasive analysis technique and can include a plurality of images of a portion of the subject at different times a temperature stimulus applied to the subject. An image of the portion of the subject can be aligned such that each pixel of the image corresponds to the same point on the subject over a sequence of images of the portion. The sequence of images can be processed after aligning the images such that data is extracted from the images. The extracted data can be used to make decisions regarding the health status of the subject. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Method and system for feature extraction and decision making from series of images

Apparatus, systems, and methods fusing material classification with spatio-spectral edge detection in spectral imagery can be used in a variety of applications. In various embodiments, a classifier can be applied to neighboring pixels in data for an image to determine, based on material changes, if the neighboring pixels are correlated to two different materials with respect to a candidate location for an edge. Results of the classification can be used with a spatio-spectral mask to accept or reject the candidate location as an edge. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Apparatus, systems, and methods relate to use of a time-varying bias for application to an avalanche photodiode. Embodiments include systems and methods of determining an appropriate time-varying bias for application to an avalanche photodiode in linear mode. Impact ionization devices under dynamic electric fields

Apparatus, systems, and methods integrating spectral information with spatial feature extraction of image data, providing simultaneous spatial and spectral feature selection of the image data, can be used in a variety of applications. In various embodiments, an edge signature for the edge between two materials can be defined using ratios of identified spectral bands, where the edge signature can be combined with a spatial mask to obtain a joint spatio-spectral mask. Exemplary embodiments provide microscope devices and methods for forming and using the microscope devices. The microscope device can include a light emitter array with each light emitter individually addressable to either emit or detect light signals. Magnified images of a sample object can be generated by a reflection mechanism and/or a transmission mechanism using one or more microscope devices in an imaging system. Real-time computer control of which microscope pixels are viewed can allow the user to digitally replicate the 'fovea' function of human vision. Viewing an object from both sides in the double-sided microscope system and from multiple pixel positions can allow the microscope to reconstruct pseudo-3D images of the object.

Lens-less digital microscope

The present invention includes methods for the reduction of speckle noise in an image and methods for segmenting an image. Each of the methods disclosed herein includes steps for analyzing the uniformity of a pixel within a plurality of pixels forming a portion of the image and, based on the uniformity of the intensity of the plurality of pixels, adjusting and/or replacing the pixel in order to produce a speckle-noise reduced image, a segmented image, or a segmented and speckle-noise reduced image. The methods of the present invention can employ for example conditional probability density functions, nonlinear estimator functions, convex energy functions and simulated annealing algorithms in the performance of their respective steps.

System and method for reduction of speckle noise in an image

A semiconductor detector has a tunable spectral response. These detectors may be used with processing techniques that permit the creation of 'synthetic' sensors that have spectral responses that are beyond the spectral responses attainable by the underlying detectors. For example, the processing techniques may permit continuous and independent tuning of both the center wavelength and the spectral resolution of the synthesized spectral response. Other processing techniques can also generate responses that are matched to specific target signatures.

Exemplary embodiments provide an infrared (IR) retinal system and method for making and using the IR retinal system. The IR retinal system can include adaptive sensor elements, whose properties including, e.g., spectral response, signal-to-noise ratio, polarization, or amplitude can be tailored at pixel level by changing the applied bias voltage across the detector. 'Color' imagery can be obtained from the IR retinal system by using a single focal plane array. The IR sensor elements can be spectrally, spatially and temporally adaptive using quantum-confined transitions in nanoscale quantum dots. The IR sensor elements can be used as building blocks of an infrared retina, similar to cones of human retina, and can be designed to work in the long-wave infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum ranging from about 8 &#x3bc;m to about 12 &#x3bc;m as well as the mid-wave portion ranging from about 3 &#x3bc;m to about 5 &#x3bc;m.
