Methods and systems are provided for automated closed-loop control of drilling trajectory during directional drilling, which automatically adjusts at least one parameter during the directional drilling to automatically control the direction of drilling when drilling a kickoff that transitions a wellbore from a vertical section to a curve or tangent section. In embodiments, the closed-loop control can be configured to automatically adjust a steering ratio (SR) parameter that controls time that a steering tool will spend in holding a desired magnetic toolface.

Automated control of trajectory of downhole drilling

A system and method that include receiving a well plan and determining a plurality of sections of the well plan and receiving data from surface and downhole to determine a current location of a drill bit. The system and method also include analyzing the well plan to automatically derive trajectory constraints that are associated with each of the plurality of sections of the well plan. The system and method additionally include determining a plurality of trajectory candidates that pertain to respective paths from the current location of a drill bit to respective targets included within each of the plurality of sections of the well plan based on a consideration of the trajectory constraints. The system and method further include determining a working plan that includes an optimal path from the current location of the drill bit to reach a final target based on the plurality of trajectory candidates.

Approaches to directional drilling

A method can include acquiring drilling performance data for a downhole tool; modeling drilling performance of the downhole tool to generate results; training a machine learning model using the drilling performance data and the results to generate a trained machine learning model; and predicting behavior of the downhole tool using the trained machine learning model.

Drilling system

A method for dynamically constructing a well includes receiving inputs that specify characteristics of a proposed well. An indicator is generated for construction of the proposed well using the inputs and a machine learning model trained using data from actual wells, and the indicator is transmitted.

Dynamic well construction model

A method for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes rotating a bottom hole assembly (BHA) in the wellbore to drill. The BHA includes a rotary steerable tool or a steerable drill bit having at least one external pad that extends radially outward into contact with a wall of the wellbore and thereby steers while drilling. A toolface demand is received and processed to compute open and close toolface angles for opening and closing a valve that actuates the steering pad. The rotation rate of the BHA is measured and processed to compute times for opening and closing the valve. The valve is opened and closed at the computed times and toolface angles at which the valve opens and closes are measured. The open and close toolface angles are compared with the measured toolface values to obtain a toolface error which is then processed to compute new open and close toolface angles.

Steering actuation feedback for a rotary steerable system

A method can include receiving data for a bottom hole assembly of a drillstring and a drill plan; generating candidate trajectories using at least a portion of the data; generating drill command schedules for the candidate trajectories; ranking the candidate trajectories based at least in part on the drill command schedules; and outputting at least a top ranked candidate trajectory and its corresponding drill command schedule.

A downhole closed loop method for controlling a curvature of a subterranean wellbore while drilling includes controlling a direction of drilling such that the drilling attitude is substantially equal to a setpoint attitude. A setpoint rate of penetration is processed in combination with a setpoint dogleg severity to compute a setpoint attitude increment. The setpoint attitude may be adjusted by the setpoint attitude increment. The setpoint attitude may be incremented at some interval to control the curvature of the wellbore while drilling.

A drill control system includes an uphole control device and a downhole control device. The uphole control device is configured to transmit a reference trajectory to the downhole control device and receive information about an actual trajectory from the downhole control device. The downhole control device is configured to receive the reference trajectory from the uphole control device, measure the actual trajectory, correct deviations between the reference trajectory and the actual trajectory, and transmit information about the actual trajectory to the uphole control device.

Directional drilling control devices and methods

A method for drilling operation in a subterranean formation, including calculating, by a hardware processor and in response to determining that an magnitude of gyro data representing rotations of a drill bit in a bottom hole assembly (BHA) and a time derivative of the gyro data are within a pre-determined range, a drift parameter of the gyro data, analyzing, by the hardware processor, the gyro data based on the drift parameter to generate a stick-slip alert, and presenting the stick-slip alert.
