This disclosure presents processes and systems for generating an image of a subterranean formation from seismic data recorded in a seismic survey of the subterranean formation. The seismic data is contaminated with low frequency noise in a low frequency band. Processes and systems reconstruct seismic data in the low frequency band of the seismic data to obtain low frequency reconstructed seismic data that is free of the low frequency noise. The low frequency reconstructed seismic data is used to construct a velocity model of the subterranean formation. The velocity model and the low frequency reconstructed seismic data are used to generate an image of the subterranean formation that reveals structures of the subterranean formation without contamination from the low frequency noise.

Methods and systems for generating an image of a subterranean formation based on low frequency reconstructed seismic data

Techniques are disclosed relating to deblending of sources in multi-source geophysical survey data, including marine or land-based data. Multiple sets of deblended receiver traces are generated by iteratively applying a coherency filter to estimated sets of deblended receiver traces and updating a residual until a termination condition is reached. In some embodiments, applying the coherency filter during a current iteration may include determining coefficients of the coherency filter based on estimated sets of deblended receiver traces from an immediately prior iteration. In further embodiments, applying the coherency filter may include applying a 3D projection filter, such as an fxy projection filter.

Separation of blended seismic survey data

Techniques are disclosed relating to machine learning in the context of noise filters for sensor data, e.g., as produced by geophysical surveys. In some embodiments, one or more filters are applied to sensor data, such a harsh filter determined to cause a threshold level of distortion in measured reflections, a mild filter determined to leave a threshold level of remaining noise signals, or an acceptable filter. In some embodiments, the system trains a machine learning classifier based on outputs of the filtering procedures and uses the classifier to determine whether other filtered sensor data from the same survey exhibits acceptable filtering. This may improve accuracy or performance in detecting unacceptable filtering, in some embodiments.

Machine learning techniques for noise attenuation in geophysical surveys

Recorded seismic data includes seismic traces having respective source orientation angles, where the source orientation angles represent deviations in seismic source orientation relative to an inline survey direction. A plurality of designature operators corresponding to respective designature orientation angles within a defined set of designature orientation angles may be generated. For a given member of the defined set of designature orientation angles, a corresponding designature operator may be applied to the recorded seismic data to generate designatured seismic data for the given designature orientation angle. For a given seismic trace having a given source orientation angle, the designatured seismic data may be interpolated to generate a designatured version of the given seismic trace. The results may be stored in a tangible, computer-readable medium.

Directional designature of marine seismic survey data

This disclosure presents processes and systems for estimating a source wavelet from seismic data recorded in a seismic survey of a subterranean formation. In one aspect, a base wavelet is determined based on recorded seismic traces obtained in a seismic survey of a subterranean formation. Processes and systems include a phase-only wavelet based on the base wavelet and the recorded seismic data. An estimated source wavelet is obtained by convolving the base wavelet with the phase-only wavelet. Properties of the subterranean formation are determined based on the estimated source wavelet and the recorded seismic data.

Mixed-phase source wavelet estimation from recorded seismic data

Techniques are disclosed relating to deblending of sources in multi-source geophysical survey data, including marine or land-based data. Recorded data may be aligned to a primary source. A deblending procedure may be iteratively applied to produce a residual term and deblended estimates for the primary source and one or more secondary sources. Following an iteration of the deblending procedure, the resultant data may be sorted according to a domain that renders the one or more secondary sources incoherent with respect to the primary source. The domain used for sorting may be different from a domain used to sort during an immediately prior iteration. In embodiments, the deblending procedure may use coherency filtering, and the coherency filtering may be weighted according to a signal-to-noise metric generated from the data being deblended.

Separation of blended marine seismic survey data acquired with simultaneous multi-source actuation

Inversion of enhanced-sensitivity controlled source electromagnetic data can include approximating a background response from measured controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) response data. The approximation can include performing a first inversion of the CSEM response data using a largest singular value in a diagonal of a matrix associated with the CSEM response data to create a first resistivity model of a subsurface of a subterranean formation and iteratively performing subsequent inversions while increasing an amount of singular values in the diagonal to obtain modeled CSEM response data to create a second resistivity model of the subsurface of the subterranean formation. Inversion of enhanced-sensitivity controlled source electromagnetic data can further include storing results of the first inversion and the iterative subsequent inversions producing a resistivity map based on the first and the second resistivity models.

Electromagnetic response data inversion using singular value decomposition

Methods and systems for generating an image of a subterranean formation from recorded seismic data obtained in a marine seismic survey of a subterranean formation are described. Methods and systems compute a volume of migrated seismic data obtained from the recorded seismic data. Spectrally enhanced traces of the migrated seismic data are computed in overlapping windows of the volume of migrated seismic data. The spectrally enhanced traces of the volume of migrated seismic data are used to generate a spectrally enhanced image of the subterranean formation.

Methods and systems to enhance resolution of seismic images

Systems and methods for detecting swell noise in geophysical data are disclosed. In particular, the systems and methods receive seismic data as input and iteratively generate a signal mask from the seismic data. The seismic data can be generated by hydrophones or geophones. The signal mask can be used to identify traces in the seismic data that are contaminated with swell noise and identify frequencies of the contaminated traces that are contaminated with swell noise.
