A depth image-based representation (DIBR) method of modeling a 3-dimensional (3D) object, by which the 3D object is expressed by depth information, color information, and camera parameters or geometry information, color information, and camera parameters. The camera parameters include position, orientation, ranges of camera view or angle (fieldOfView), front and back of a camera volume (nearPlane and farPlane) and projection information(orthographic) on whether an object is projected on a camera orthographically or perspectively, and, when at least one of modeling and rendering of a 3D object is performed, values of the camera parameters are changed in real time.

Depth image-based representation method for 3D object, modeling method and apparatus, and rendering method and apparatus using the same

A method and apparatus for encoding and/or decoding depth image-based representation (DIBR) data are provided. The encoding method includes: converting 3-dimensional (3D) volume data into adjustable octree data with predetermined labels given to nodes; by referring to the labels, encoding nodes of the adjustable octree from the root node to leaf nodes by a modified breadth-first search (BFS) method allocating priorities among children nodes; and generating a bitstream with predetermined header information and encoded node data. The decoding method includes: extracting header information containing at least resolution information of an object, from a bitstream and decoding the header information; calculating the number of nodes by using the resolution information of the header, and by a modified BFS method allocating priorities among children nodes, decoding each node of a tree from the root node to leaf nodes; and restoring an adjustable tree by using decoded nodes. According to the method and apparatus, a huge amount of 3D volume data can be encoded with a high efficiency, and volume data with an arbitrary resolution as well as volume data with a fixed resolution can be encoded with a high efficiency. Accordingly, with a small amount of data, 3D volume data with a high picture quality can be restored. In addition, since a progressive bitstream is generated, 3D volume data can be shown progressively when decoding is performed.

A method of generating and recovering three-dimensional (3D) compression data and an apparatus to perform the method is described. The method includes generating configuration information of a 3D compression data sequence, generating a plurality of pieces of individual 3D compression data to be included in the 3D compression data sequence, and generating the 3D compression data sequence by combining the plurality of pieces of the individual 3D compression data, combining the 3D compression data sequence with the configuration information, and outputting the combined result. The generating of each of the plurality of pieces of individual 3D compression data includes generating individual configuration information of the piece of individual 3D compression data, generating a start code according to a data type of the piece of individual 3D compression data, and generating the 3D compression data according to the data type.

A schema and style sheets for DIBR data are provided. The schema includes: a BitWrapper node schema used for graphics data compression; and a DepthImage node schema, which is used for depthimage-based model rendering, includes camera information and texture information having a depth information, defines diTexture as an element including SFDepthtextureNode as a model group, wherein the BitWrapper node schema includes: a node element, which contains graphics data including data to be compressed and refers to SFWorldNode as a subelement; a BitWrapperEncodingParameter element; and three attributes having the names type, url, and buffer and the types SFInt32, MFUrI, and SFString, respectively. The schema and style sheets allow an author to easily control the representation and compression of DIBR when authoring 3D contents and to easily generate an input file for an MPEG-4 encoder.
