An apparatus includes an AWG demultiplexer having first and second adjacent input ports. The first input port is configured to receive a first WDM data-bearing signal, the second input port is configured to receive a first WDM LO signal. The first and second input ports are located such that individual channels of said WDM data-bearing signal route to a first set of output ports, and individual channels of said WDM LO signal route to a second set of output ports interleaved with the first set.

There is provided a method and apparatus for optically filtering a communication signal. More specifically, in one embodiment, there is provided an apparatus comprising an optical filter having first and second input ports and first and second output ports, the optical filter being configured to transmit light in a target frequency range to the first output port in response to receiving light at the first input port and being configured to transmit light in the target frequency range to the second input port in response to receiving light at the second output port, and first and second photodiodes, the first diode being located to be illuminated by light from the first output port and the second photodiode being located to be illuminated by light from the second input port.

Method and apparatus for optically filtering a communication signal

An apparatus includes a conductive or semiconductive substrate and a dielectric layer located directly thereon. A semiconductor layer is located directly on the dielectric layer. The semiconductor layer includes a ridge waveguide and a heater strip extending parallel to the ridge waveguide. The heater strip is electrically isolated from the ridge waveguide and is doped to carry a current therein about parallel to the ridge waveguide.

Thermally controlled semiconductor optical waveguide

A method of using an optical device. The method comprises splitting a light beam into a first beam that passes through a first arm of a waveguide, and, into a second beam that passes through a second arm of the waveguide. The method also comprises passing at least one of the first beam or second beam through one or more optical resonators that are optically coupled to at least one of the first or second arms. The method also comprises determining a difference in the light-transmittance of the first beam exiting the first arm and the light-transmittance of the second beam exiting the second arm, and, adjusting the operating wavelength if the difference in transmittance exceeds a predefined value.

An apparatus comprising a Mache-Zehnder interferometer. The Mache-Zehnder interferometer comprises: a 1&#xd7;2 optical splitter having an optical input, a 2&#xd7;2 optical coupler having first and second optical outputs, two optical waveguide arms end-connecting each optical output of the 1&#xd7;2 optical splitter to a corresponding optical input of the 2&#xd7;2 optical coupler, a variable optical phase shifter on one of the waveguide arms and a plurality of optical resonators, each optical resonator being controllably coupled along one of the optical waveguide arms. An optical path length between the optical input of the 1&#xd7;2 optical coupler and the first optical output of the 2&#xd7;2 optical coupler is substantially the same via the first optical waveguide arm and the second optical waveguide arm when the optical resonators are decoupled from the optical waveguide arms.

An apparatus includes an optical splitter, an optical intensity combiner, first and second Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and first and second drive electrodes. The first Mach-Zehnder interferometer connects a first optical output of the optical intensity splitter to a first optical input of the optical intensity combiner. The second Mach-Zehnder interferometer connects a second optical output of the optical intensity splitter to a second optical input of the optical intensity combiner. The first drive electrode is located between and connected to a pair of semiconductor junctions along first internal optical arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Optical device and method for optical frequency modulation to optical amplitude modulation conversion

An apparatus comprising an electronic-photonic device. The device includes a planar substrate having a top layer on a middle layer, active electronic components and active photonic waveguide components. The active electronic components are located on first lateral regions of the top layer, and the active photonic waveguide components are located on second lateral regions of the top layer. The second-region thickness is greater than the first-region thickness. The top layer has a higher refractive index than the middle layer.
