The present invention provides a simpler and more energy efficient process for the preparation of fatty acid methyl ester (biodiesel) from sun dried whole seed capsules ofintegrated with value addition of seed shells, deoiled cake and crude glycerol co-product stream. More specifically, the invention relates to a method of dispensing with the need for excess methanol recovery through distillation, cost-effective resin treatment for the refining of methyl ester and utilization of co-streams for preparation of high density energy briquettes and Polyhydroxyalkanoate biodegradable polymer in efficient and cost-effective manner.

An energy efficient process for the preparation of marine microalgaefatty acid methyl ester (CME) from hydrolysate of deoiled cake of(JOCH) and crude glycerol co-product stream (GL7 and GL8) along with seawater diluted with tap water (1:2). A small part of the crude glycerol layer in case of JME is processed to recover glycerol for glycerol washing and the otherwise problematic still bottom is utilized for microbial synthesis of PHAs and the rest is utilized for Microalgal conversion of JME byproducts into CME. The remaining part of the methanol-depleted glycerol layer is utilized, along with hydrolysate of thedeoiled cake (JOCH), for single-stage Microalgal production of lipids by a marine Microalgal isolate (sp.) without the need for any other nutrients. Waste streams from the microalgal processes can be discharged directly into agricultural fields as biofertilizer or recycled back in the mass cultivation.

A method for preparation of iodizing agent for the use in the formulation of iodized salt that offers excellent stability of iodine in iodized salt is developed and the unrefined salt iodized with this compound was tested for its stability in presence of moisture, temperature and metal salts at higher temperature. The hydrotalcite type layered compound was used to prepare such compound and part of carbonate was substituted with iodate anion. The iodizing agent exhibited excellent stability of iodine in iodized salt.

Iodizing agent and process for preparation thereof

The invention describes the cost effective process for the preparation of a mixture of salts having low sodium salt (health salt) contain and exclusively derived from vegetable sources which have desired sodium chloride: potassium chloride ratio and traces of micronutrients including iodine, said salt is white in color and free flowing in nature.

An improved process is described for the preparation of surface modified hydrotalcite. The process comprises reacting a precursor of magnesium and aluminium in the presence of suitable alkali carbonate at high temperature. The product has a BET surface area of &#x2266;20 m/gm and average particle size of &#x2266;0.5 &#x3bc;m and is useful as halogen scavenger and fire retardant.

Process for preparing hydrotalcite and brucite type posite charged layers

The present invention relates to a novel device that enables a person to gauge the brine density in solar salt works from afar without recourse to sampling of the brine. The device&#x2014;which can be considered as an improvisation over the conventional laboratory type Baume meter&#x2014;an be placed directly in the salt pa. The device remains sunk, and therefore invisible, until the desired density of brine is approached. Thereafter it gradually floats up and becomes visible from afar. From appropriate markings on the rod connected to the top end of the device, it can be gauged whether the brine is yet to attain the desired density, or has attained the desired density range, or has exceeded the desired density range. The device is resistant to corrosion and able to combat extreme weather conditions prevailing in solar salt works. The control of brine density from afar helps eliminate the need for frequent sampling of brine for density measurement that would make adherence to the optimum process of salt production easier. The methodology can be extended to production of other marine chemicals such as carnallite and kainite.

This invention relates to new use of marine cyanobacteria and deposited with ATCC having accession numbers ATCC PTA-4602 and 4603 for the removal of calcium ions from sea-brine and sub-soil brine having a density range 10 to 25.5&deg; Be&prime;, by culturing the cyanobacteria, inoculating the cyanobacteria culture to raw brine of 10 to 25.5&deg; Be&prime;, filtering the resultant mixture to obtain a brine having less calcium, and to separate the cyanobacteria which can be reused if desired.
