A new step-index multimode pure silica core fiber for DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing) system particularly useful for downhole environments is disclosed and described. The new sensor system provides optimum tradeoffs between coupling power, spatial resolution, and temperature resolution.

Pure silica core multimode fiber sensors for DTS applications

Systems and methods for extending the range of a fiber optic DTS system are provided. In one respect, a method may provide steps for transmitting, in a first time period, an optical signal at a first energy level through an optical fiber, collecting backscatter signals as a result of the first transmission, adjusting the first energy level to a second energy level, transmitting, in an additional time period, the adjusted optical signal through the optical fiber, collecting backscatter signals as a result of the adjusted transmissions, and using a portion of the collected backscatter as a result of the first transmission and a portion of the collected backscatter as a result of the additional transmissions, determining one or more parameter profiles, such as a temperature profile.

Methods and systems for extending the range for fiber optic distributed temperature (DTS) systems

An apparatus for determining a polarization-insensitive interferometric signal and a birefringence for a sample and methods for using such an apparatus to characterize the sample are proved herein. Such apparatuses may generally be designed to eliminate birefringence associated with the apparatus itself, collect data from the sample using light in both orthogonal states, and determine the interference birefringence associated with the collected data.

Low reflection lateral output fiber probe

A multi-channel low coherence interferometer having sensing and reference arms, at least one of which has variable delay. The sensing arm includes an optical switch for connecting to two or more probe arms. The distal ends of the probe arms collect source light backscattered from a sample. The backscattered light collected by the distal end of a probe arm is combined with reference light and a low coherence interferometric signal is produced by a sweep of a variable delay of the device or a sweep of a variable frequency laser light source. The interference signal produced by the interaction of reference and sensing light at a detector measures backscattered light, which may be used to characterize the sample. The low coherence interferometric signals can provide information about the morphology, physical nature, composition, and properties of the sample. The device may be used to discriminate between finished surfaces and corroded surfaces, healthy and diseased tissue, and can sample the material or tissue in two or more areas. Versions of the invention include devices that are interferometers and or autocorrelators.

Multi-channel low coherence interferometer

The receiver features a first splitter which divides a differential phase modulated signal into three signal components from which at least two signal components are routed via timers. The first timer has a delay of a half period of the carrier signal and thereby serves in a conventional way for phase comparison and thus for demodulation. The second timer is adjustable and is used to compensate for the dispersion.
