Systems, methods and a cooling module are described. The cooling module is configured to directly cool the plurality of battery cell tabs. The cooling module includes a generally prismatic isolation sheet contacting the battery cell tabs along a common plane and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger includes a metallic portion defining an open cavity and a lightweight portion joined to the metallic portion to define a unitary flow assembly. The metallic portion includes an outer planar surface engaging the second planar surface. The lightweight portion is formed from a thermally conductive plastic material and includes baffles integrally formed with and extending therefrom. The plurality of baffles engage an interior surface of the metallic portion to thereby define a serpentine path for the cooling fluid.

Battery-cell tab direct cooling using a multi-material cooling module

A vehicle includes a first seat and a second seat occupying a vehicle body, a battery pack disposed between the first seat and the second seat, a first inboard airbag, and a second inboard airbag, and optionally a first outboard airbag and a second outboard airbag. The airbags are deployable from a packed position to or between an inflated position. The first inboard airbag is configured to deploy and occupy a space between the first seat and the battery pack, the first outboard airbag is configured to deploy and occupy a space between the first seat and the first side of the vehicle body, the second inboard airbag is configured to deploy and occupy a space between the second seat and the battery pack, and the second outboard airbag is configured to deploy and occupy a space between the second seat and the second side of the vehicle body.

Airbag protection system for vehicle battery packs

A cast aluminum differential housing for a motor vehicle powertrain having cast iron inserts. The housing is cast of light weight aluminum which weighs approximately one-third that of iron which has formerly been used to fabricate such housings. At locations of significant loads and wear, such as the mountings for the stub shaft associated with the two idler bevel gears, iron inserts are cast into the housing. The housing thus weighs significantly less than a comparable iron differential housing but since the two significant wear and load bearing regions include cast iron inserts, the aluminum differential housing of the present invention has the ruggedness, durability and service life of the much heavier iron housing.
