Scanning devices and method of use that permit the capture of high resolution images of an original that is illuminated by a light source that is located outside of the optical field of view of an image detector. In one aspect, the image detector may be a monochrome sensor that sequentially captures different color plane images of an original that is illuminated by different colors. The different color plane images may be processed to generate a full color copy of the original. Light and images may be directed through tapered optical waveguides to minimize the volume of the scanning device. The image detector may include a first associated waveguide while the light source may include a second associated waveguide.

Image illumination and capture in a scanning device

An imaging apparatus includes a controller and a media detection device mechanically engaged with a stack of print media. The media detection device has a movable indicator having a surface with distinct reflectance characteristics. A reflectance sensor is communicatively coupled to the controller. The reflectance sensor reads a reflectance of the surface and outputs a signal to the controller indicative of at least one characteristic of the print media.

Print media detection in an imaging apparatus

Scanning devices and method of use that accommodate a longer imaging distance while minimizing the size of the device. The scanning device may include an imaging unit having a sensor and optics. The scanning device may further include a target bed for placement of the targeted documents. An imaging distance extends between the imaging unit and the target bed. In one embodiment, the housing may be collapsed after the scanning procedure to reduce the overall device size. Reflective members may also be positioned within the interior of the device to lengthen the imaging distance. Still further embodiments may include a movable imaging unit.

Method and device for reducing a size of a scanning device

An open jam-door sensor having a peripheral device such as a printer including a substantially C-shaped feed path, the C-shaped feed path defining an inner guide and an outer guide, the outer guide being connected to the peripheral device. A media sensor for detecting type of media in the device is disposed on one of said guide opposite a reflective portion disposed on the other of said guides. The media sensor also being used to detect when the outer guide is in an open position and causing a processor to inhibit device operations, such as printing.

A method, and an apparatus employing the method, of scanning a bound document. The method includes the acts of acquiring image data of the document that has an image attribute, identifying from the image data a group of image data that has the first image attribute, and modifying the group of image data having the first image attribute with a second image attribute.

Bound document scanning method and apparatus

An ink identification and detection system includes an imaging apparatus. An ink tank is mounted to the imaging apparatus. The ink tank has a transparent portion. An ink is contained in the ink tank. The ink includes a fluorescing material. An ink detection device is communicatively coupled to a controller. The ink detection device is configured to emit light in a non-visible spectrum of light through the transparent portion to the ink, and is configured to detect light in a visible or near-infrared spectrum of light emitted through the transparent portion by the fluorescing material in the ink. The ink detection device supplies a signal representing the detected light to the controller for identifying the ink.

Ink identification and detection system with ink for use therewith

Methods for establishing or configuring imaging device settings use the luminance and chrominance values of an original document. The document is identified as either a text document or a photograph based at least in part on the luminance values of the document's pixels, and identified as black and white or color document based at least in part on the chrominance values of the document's pixels. The settings of the imaging device may then be based at least in part on whether the document is a text or photograph, or black and white or color.

Methods of identifying the type of a document to be scanned

An illuminated media position indicator for an imaging device comprises a scanner having a scanner top cover including an inner edge portion which defines an opening for a scanning platen disposed adjacent the opening. The inner edge portion defines at least one corner corresponding to a scan origin. An illuminated registration corner is positioned in said at least one corner corresponding to the scan origin and comprises at least one LED in optical communication with the illuminated registration corner. The illuminated registration corner communicates light from the at least one LED throughout the illuminated registration corner using substantially total internal reflection to indicate media position and orientation at said scan origin.

Illuminated media position indicator and method of use

An imaging apparatus includes a controller and a media detection device mechanically engaged with a print media. The media detection device has a movable indicator having a surface with distinct reflectance characteristics. A reflectance sensor is communicatively coupled to the controller. The reflectance sensor reads a reflectance of the surface and outputs a signal to the controller indicative of at least one characteristic of the print media.

An image sensor has two or three rows of imaging elements, all the imaging elements being of the same size. This provides the rows with a native resolution. The image sensor is also provided with three shift registers. First and second shift register elements receive information from respective corresponding imaging element in a first and second row of imagining elements while shift register elements of the third shift register receive information from four imaging elements. The four imaging elements form a super-pixel, allowing the sensor to output information in a low resolution mode, as well a native and a high resolution mode.

Multiple resolution optical imager using single size image elements

An imaging device has a print media path for transporting a print media sheet in a sheet feed direction. A mounting device is coupled to a frame. A media sensor has a body and at least one rotating member rotatably coupled to the body. The body is coupled to the mounting device. The mounting device is configured to facilitate movement of the media sensor in a direction toward the media path and to restrain movement of the media sensor in the sheet feed direction. The media sensor is positioned by the mounting device such that at least one rotating member rotates due to contact with a surface of the print media sheet as the print media sheet moves relative to the media sensor in the sheet feed direction along the print media path.

Imaging apparatus having a media sensor

An imaging apparatus includes a media support surface. A light source and a light detector are positioned in relation to a reflective surface such that when a sheet of print media covers the reflective surface, a reflected specular light component of a light beam is received by the light detector, and when the reflective surface is not covered, the reflective surface directs the reflected specular light component of the light beam away from the detector. The signal strength of the output from the light detector when receiving a diffuse light component reflected from the reflective surface is less than the signal strength of the output from the light detector when receiving the reflected specular light component that is reflected from a low reflectance print media.

Media sensor apparatus using a two component media sensor for media absence detection

An imaging apparatus includes a printing mechanism having a media path. A print media source is provided for supplying a sheet of print media to the printing mechanism. A drive unit is provided, with a drive shaft coupled to the drive unit. A media sensor device is mounted to the drive shaft, wherein as the drive shaft is rotated in a first direction the media sensor device is moved from a first position that is out of the media path to a second position that is in the media path for sensing the sheet of print media. As the drive shaft is rotated in a second direction opposite to the first direction the media sensor device is moved from the second position that is in the media path for sensing the sheet of print media to the first position that is out of the media path.

Imaging apparatus including a movable media sensor

An imaging apparatus includes a sensor, and a carrier system configured to transport the sensor along a scanning path. A mid-frame is provided having a slot formed along the scanning path. A print media support is provided for holding a supply of print media. A print media detection device is positioned below the mid-frame. The print media detection device includes a first end and a second end. The first end has a sense surface, wherein the sensor senses one of a presence and an absence of the sense surface in the slot of the mid-frame as a determination of the depletion of the supply of print media at the print media support.
