A server, upon receiving a request to complete a call over a packet-switched network, looks up an address on the packet-switched network on a local table. If the local table does not contain a matching address, the server asks a routing server to identify a receiving server address. The routing server identifies a suitable address and sends a message to the originating server containing the address. The routing server may consider such factors as the volume of calls currently being handled by various potential receiving servers in selecting a receiving server. The receiving server then receives, via the packet-switched network, a message requesting a telephone connection to a second telephone device. Before completing the connection to the second telephone device, information in the message representing the address of the device on the packet-switched network that originated the message is identified. The address information is compared to selected predetermined addresses for permitted origins of the message. The permitted origins may be other servers or clients of the receiving server. If the address in the message corresponds to a predetermined permitted address, the server will proceed with completion of the call. If the address in the message does not correspond to a predetermined permitted address, the server will refuse to complete the call.

Method and system for routing and security for telephone calls over a packet-switched network

According to a first embodiment, a first PBX coupled to a first internet gateway device determines whether or not a second PBX has access to a second internet gateway device and, if so, the second PBX sends the IP (internet protocol) address of the second internet gateway device to the first PBX, and the first PBX sends the IP address of the first internet gateway device to the second PBX, over the PSTN (public switched telephone network) and/or over a network signalling channel. The first and second internet gateway devices then set up a voice communications path over the internet between the first and second PBXes.

Techniques for providing telephonic communications over the internet

A telephone call from first telephone device to a second telephone device is initiated by a call directly from the first telephone device to a first gateway. The first gateway receives dialed digits from the second telephone device, identifies an address on a packet switched network of a second gateway associated with the second telephone device, which identified by the dialed digits. The first gateway contacts the second gateway via the packet-switched network. The second gateway initiates a circuit-switched telephone connection to the second telephone device. When a ringing signal or busy signal is received from the second telephone device by the second gateway, the second gateway provides a signal via the packet-switched network to the first gateway. The first gateway provides the corresponding signal to the first telephone device.

Method and system for call signaling in telephone calls over a packet-switched network

A telephone system simultaneously transmits voice and data through a public switched telephone network and over one telephone line between a calling party location having an ISDN connection and a destination party location having a POTS analog connection. The calling party location determines if the destination party location has an analog POTS connection and then creates a connection between the calling party and the destination party. Data and voice band signals are packetized and multiplexed and transmitted through the public switched telephone network to a modem located at the destination party location. The packets are demultiplexed into separate voice band and digital signal components and the digital signal components demodulated within the modem. The demodulated data signals are forwarded to a data terminal and a voice band signals forwarded to an analog terminal.

Method and system for interoperating between ISDN and PSTN transport for

A telephone apparatus enables the approximate simultaneous transmission and reception of audio interleaved with image and graphical annotation signals, in data packet form, over an analog line which connects the apparatus to a switched telephone network. The audio data packets are transmitted at a periodic rate, during a first time interval, and the image and annotation data packets are transmitted during a second time interval, following the first time interval, enabling the simultaneous output of voice, image and annotation data at the receiver site. Control data packets, as needed, are also transmitted during the second time interval for end-to-end apparatus control. One feature enables the transmission of audio data packets at a first periodic rate, when in an image transmission mode, and at a second periodic rate, faster than the first periodic rate, when not in the image transmission mode.
