Disclosed herein are coherent transceivers and methods of using the same. One exemplary coherent transceiver may be provided with a coherent transmitter operable to transmit a first optical signal and a coherent receiver comprising a processor executing processor-executable code that when executed causes the processor to receive a second optical signal, the second optical signal being a reflection of the first optical signal, analyze the second optical signal to determine a first parameter indicative of a chromatic dispersion of the second optical signal, and determine a second parameter based on the first parameter. The second parameter may be indicative of a distance travelled by the first optical signal and the second optical signal through one or more fiber optic link having a known first location.

Fiber cut/fault localization using digital subcarriers

This disclosure describes digitally generating sub-carriers (SCs) to provide isolation and dynamic allocation of bandwidth between uplink and downlink traffic between transceivers that are communicatively coupled via a bidirectional link including one or more segments of optical fiber. Separate uplink and downlink communication channels may be created using digitally generated SCs and using the same transmitter laser. In some implementations, one or more of the nodes include a transceiver having at least one laser and one digital signal processing (DSP) operable for digitally generating at least two SCs and detecting at least two SCs. The transceiver can transmit selected SCs, and can receive other SCs. Accordingly, the transceiver can facilitate bidirectional communication, for example, over a single optical fiber link. In some instances, techniques can facilitate dynamic bandwidth assignment by facilitating adding or blocking of optical subcarriers from transmission in an uplink or downlink direction.

Bidirectional optical communications

A method is described in which a coherent transmitter transmits a first optical signal having customer data through a fiber optic link. A control signal is provided to the coherent transmitter to cause the coherent transmitter to transmit a second optical signal devoid of customer data. A reflection of the second optical signal is detected via the coherent receiver. Then, a chromatic dispersion of the reflection of the second optical signal is determined and correlated with known parameters indicative of an amount of chromatic dispersion per unit length of the fiber optic link to determine a distance travelled by the second optical signal.

A telecommunication appliance and method is described. In the method, a flexible cover part of an appliance cover of a telecommunication appliance supported by a telecommunication rack is removed while the telecommunication appliance is in service and passing data. The telecommunication appliance has a plurality of pluggable optical modules installed within connectors within a space encompassed by the appliance cover. The connectors are operably connected to a power supply supplying power to the connectors. When a first one of the connectors is devoid of a pluggable optical module being installed within the first one of the connectors, a first pluggable optical module is plugged into the first one of the connectors.

Methods and systems are disclosed including a system comprising a first node, having a first transceiver comprising a first receiver and a first transmitter, comprising a tunable laser, configured to transmit a first optical signal on a first channel and to transmit a second optical signal on a second channel if the first receiver does not detect a third optical signal; a second node having a second transceiver comprising a second receiver and a second transmitter configured to transmit the third optical signal on the first channel if the second receiver detects the second optical signal; and a filter having ports configured to a particular bandwidth and to suppress the first optical signal if the first optical signal is not within the particular bandwidth of the port, and to transmit the second optical signal to the second node if the second optical signal is within the particular bandwidth.

Optical network laser auto-tuning methods and systems

A solid-state laser or arrangement for wavelength conversion is disclosed, which in its simplest embodiment is comprised of a light-generating body arranged in a supporting means, the light-generating body having a shape which is substantially complementary to a guiding structure which is formed in the supporting means. The guiding structure is formed with a high degree of accuracy, for instance, by etching the supporting means or by replicating an original. Between the light-generating body and the guiding structure of the supporting means a thin contact layer is arranged, the purpose of which is to increase the adherence to and/or the heat transfer to the supporting means. Due to the fact that the contact layer is a deformable material, possible discrepancies as regards complementary between the guiding structure and the light-generating body will be filled by the contact layer whereby a close fit is obtained between the complementary structure.
