An optical sensor module has a controller, a sensor array, present state decision circuitry, and a pattern recognizer. The sensor array comprises a plurality of CMOS sensor pixels, wherein the sensor array is configured to supply one of a plurality of analog sensor signals at each of a sequence of sample times, wherein at each of the sample times, the one of the plurality of analog sensor signals is derived from one or more of the plurality of CMOS sensor pixels. The present state decision circuitry is configured to compare the one of the plurality of the analog sensor signals with a respective controller-selected reference voltage and to generate therefrom a respective single state decision signal. The pattern recognizer is configured to assert a pattern recognition signal whenever a plurality of sequentially generated single state decision signals matches a currently active one of a set of one or more reference sequences of single state decision signals. The controller is configured to assert a host system trigger signal when the pattern recognition signal is asserted a predefined number of times in sequence.

Devices implementing light communications use waveguides to efficiently collect light used for the light communications and propagate that collected light to a sensor. More particularly, light collected from one or more sensors propagates along a TIR waveguide until disrupted by a diffusive element, which effectively directs the propagating light to a sensor. In so doing, the solution presented herein increases the amount of light available for the light communications and/or reduces the number of sensors needed for the light communications, e.g., by providing light collected from multiple different locations to a single sensor. The waveguide solution presented herein may be implemented inside a device and/or along an exterior surface, e.g., housing or casing, of a device.

The light communication solution presented herein uses waveguides with multiple entrances to efficiently collect light used for light communications and propagate that collected light to a sensor. To that end each waveguide entrance, or at least all but the initial waveguide entrance, is configured to not only collect and input the light into the TIR waveguide, but also to maintain TIR of light already propagating within the TIR waveguide. In so doing, the solution presented herein increases the amount of light available for light communications.
