An indwelling catheter is positioned in a urinary tract to drain urine from the bladder to a position distally adjacent to a sphincter muscle. A balloon of the catheter is inflated through an inflation tube extending through the urinary tract. A coiled section of the inflation tube contacts the constriction caused by the sphincter muscle. The balloon and the coiled section resist movement of the indwelling catheter while still permitting natural urination. The indwelling catheter is inserted by an insertion tool which is separably connected to the catheter. Once the indwelling catheter is positioned, the tool is disconnected and withdrawn from the urinary tract. Risks of blood clots obstructing the flow of urine through the indwelling catheter immediately following a surgical procedure on the prostate gland are avoided by flushing fluid through the insertion tool and the catheter to clear an internal urine flow passageway in the catheter.

A partial-length catheter, or an extendable tube or sleeve member of the catheter, is selectively movable within the prostatic urethra to open a urine drainage passageway through and obstructed portion of the prostatic urethra or to open the external urinary sphincter muscle and thereby discharge urine from the bladder. A control element is manipulated at a position exterior of the urinary canal to selectively move the catheter or the extendable tube or sleeve member, thereby selectively controlling urine discharge.

The invention relates to a method and a device for heat treatment of prostatic tissue. The device comprises a treatment catheter with an expandable fluid reservoir and first heating means which is arranged within the treatment catheter and emits electromagnetic radiation for heating of the surrounding prostatic tissue. A second heating means is provided in thermal contact with the liquid in the fluid reservoir for heating of the liquid in the fluid reservoir as well as the tissue located in the immediate surrounding of the reservoir.

Method and apparatus for self-draining of urine

A thermotherapy catheter for heat treating the prostate gland includes an O-ring positioned within a chamber between an outer tube and an interior heat generation device guide tube. The O-ring supports a distal end portion of a probe guide tube at a desired acute angle so that a temperature probe can be advanced from the end of the probe guide tube into the prostate gland at a predetermined desired acute angle for calculating tissue heating and tissue necrosis information from temperature sensors located on a distal end of the temperature probe. The O-ring also separates a still liquid chamber from a circulatory flow path so that heated liquid surrounding the generation device is applied effectively to heat the prostate gland, while the circulating cooling fluid effectively removes heat from a feed cable which supplies energy to the heat generation device.

A device for the drainage of the bladder through the body's own urethra opening outside of the human body, comprising a tube-shaped body (). The tube-shaped body is comprised: to assume a first contracted position and for taken up within the bladder as well as a to assume a second partially extended position. At least one thread () extends between the bladder and an opening of the urethra and is attached at a first end of the tube-shaped body so that the tube-shaped body can be extended from the first position to the second position during the application of a pulling force upon the thread. The tube-shaped body in the second partially extended position extends in such a manner so as to exceed the distance between the bladder and the point of the urethra's closing. The tube-shaped body is comprised in such a manner that it will return to the first position upon the release of the pulling force on the thread. The device is inserted into the bladder, in that a tube-shaped body is extended and inserted into an extended tube-shaped introducing member. The introducing member is inserted in through the urethra, so that the end piece of the tube-shaped body enters the bladder. The tube-shaped body is pushed out of the tube-shaped introducing member and into the bladder during the course of which it returns to the first contracted position completely within the bladder and in the course of which the placement of a thread that is attached to the tube-shaped body and that extends outside of the urethra is left to remain.
