A near field communication (NFC) mobile device may obtain location information from a NFC terminal device that is communicating with the NFC mobile device. A data transfer link may be established between the NFC mobile device and a mobile telecommunication network. The mobile telecommunication network may prompt the NFC mobile device to obtain location information from the NFC terminal device. The mobile telecommunication network may then receive the location information from the NFC mobile device via the data transfer link, and may subsequently determine a location of the NFC mobile device using the location information.

Service enhancements using near field communication

A location provision facility communicates with a mobile telecommunications device over an IP-based telecommunications network to obtain information that enables the facility to determine a location of the telecommunications device. The facility and/or the telecommunications device store the determined location. In response to requests from location-based applications for the location of the telecommunications device, the facility can provide the location-based applications with the stored or calculated location.

System and method for utilizing IP-based wireless telecommunications client location data

A system and method determines a geographic position of a mobile device in communication with an IP-based wireless telecommunications network. A wireless connection between the mobile device and the IP-based wireless telecommunications network is established when the mobile device registers with a network controller (NC) through an access point (AP). When a geographical position is needed for the mobile device (e.g., a 911 call), messages are exchanged between the NC and the SMLC where the SMLC retrieves information from a database that is used to identify the geographic position of the mobile device. The database can store a variety of information related to mobile devices such as: last known position, IP address, MAC address, device or subscriber identifier, last CGI, etc. The geographical position is communicated back to the NC, which can then forward the position information to a switch for processing such as for 911 calls.

Determining device location in an IP-based wireless telecommunications network

A facility for determining the location of a mobile device when a location determination of a desired accuracy is desired. If available, the facility determines the location of the mobile device using a device-based technique or using a location determination technique that is accessible over a macronetwork. Macronetworks are networks that are designed to cover relatively large areas. If a location determination technique of desired accuracy is not available on the device or over a macronetwork, the facility attempts to use a location determination technique that is accessible over a micronetwork to determine the location of the mobile device. Micronetworks are networks that are designed to cover smaller areas. By forcing a switch from a macronetwork-based location determination technique to a micronetwork-based location determination technique, the facility ensures that a location determination is made for the mobile device of a desired accuracy, time to fix (TTF), and/or yield.

A location continuity application server described herein is configured to access from an access network a set of location data associated with a position measurement for a mobile device. The location continuity application server may also access from another access network another set of location data associated with another position measurement for the mobile device and combine the sets of location data to determine a location of the mobile device. Further, prior to accessing the set of location data, the location continuity application server may provide reference location data associated with a reference location of the mobile device to the access network to enable the access network to obtain the position measurement based at least on the reference location data. The location continuity application server may also access the set of location data and determine the location of the mobile device responsive to a request from an emergency service provider.

System and method for determining device location in an IP-based wireless telecommunications network

A location continuity service having a location continuity application server ('LCAS') that utilizes location data generated by multiple networks to determine the location of a mobile device is disclosed. The LCAS specifies a suitable reconciliation process that identifies two or more location estimation techniques that are implemented by different access networks and indicates how to utilize the location data produced by the identified estimation techniques. The LCAS interacts with various access networks identified by the reconciliation process in order to receive location data (e.g., positioning measurements and/or estimated locations) generated by the access networks and analyzes the received data to determine the location of a mobile device and provide the determined location to a location-based service. In some examples, an LCAS also provides location continuity when a mobile device moves between a home communications system and a visited communications system.

A system and method for mitigating the delay associated with using GPS technologies to determine the location of a mobile device. The system utilizes a two-stage location determination process. During the first stage, an estimated position of the mobile device is immediately provided based on the most accurate stored location information that is available to the system. If greater accuracy is still required, during the second stage a more accurate position of the mobile device is provided using GPS-based technologies.
