Apparatus and method for communication in non-terrestrial networks are provided. Downlink transmissions are received () from one or more non-terrestrial nodes. Signal strengths and/or signal quality of the transmissions are measured () from the one or more non-terrestrial nodes. Transitions between line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight states regarding the one or more non-terrestrial nodes are determined (). Locations of the one or more non-terrestrial nodes and the apparatus are determined () and elevation and azimuth angles to the one or more non-terrestrial nodes from the apparatus are calculated (). A database of the line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight states is generated () as a function of elevation and azimuth angles and apparatus location and utilised () to determine expected line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight states for non-terrestrial nodes.

Communication in non-terrestrial networks

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices, methods, apparatuses and computer readable storage media of signalling enabling Timing Advance (TA) exchange between User Equipment (UE) and Radio Access Network (RAN). The method comprises receiving, at a first device, a TA margin from a second device; transmitting, to the second device, information associated with a reference location of the first device at a first time point; determining a reference TA of the first device at least based on the reference location of the first device; determining an actual TA of the first device at least based on an actual location of the first device at a second time point; and determining, based on a comparison of a TA margin with a difference between the reference TA and the actual TA, whether to transmit an updated reference location of the first device to the second device. In this way, the control for uplink overhead from TA/location updates and probability of impacting downlink scheduling become flexible. Furthermore, the downlink delay can be optimised and meanwhile overhead in case of very few small packets transmitted can be minimized. As a result, the network can optimize its own performance and the battery savings of the users.

The method may also include monitoring a current cell for wake-up signal beacons during a wake-up signal mode using the received at least one configuration, and modifying the monitoring of the current cell based on a detection metric. Various example embodiments relate to provision of a positioning time gap in a paging procedure. An apparatus may obtain positioning capability information of a device. The positioning capability information may comprise an indication of a first time period for determining a position of the device with first initial positioning data and an indication of a second time period for determining the position of the device with second initial positioning data. A positioning time gap may be determined based on the positioning capability information of the device. The apparatus may transmit a first signal, but refrain from transmitting a second signal for at least a duration of the positioning time gap from the first signal. The method may also include receiving an uplink grant in a random access response message in response to the random access preamble message. The method may further include adding an implicit timing advance offset to an uplink time domain resource allocation of the uplink grant to establish synchronization of radio transmissions between the user equipment and the network element. The method may also include transmitting a scheduled transmission message including the implicit timing advance offset to the network element.
