A system in an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft includes two or more subsystems. Each subsystem includes an energy storage systems (ESS). Each ESS is coupled to one or more motors that actuate one or more rotors of the eVTOL aircraft and includes one or more energy sub-packs and one or more power sub-packs. The one or more power sub-packs supply more power than the one or more energy sub-packs and the one or more energy sub-packs supply consistent power for a longer duration than the one or more power sub-packs. The system also includes one or more inter-subsystem switches to electrically isolate or connect adjacent ones of the two or more subsystems.

Dual-chemistry propulsion system for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft

A power control system for a battery system of a vehicle includes one or more supplemental protection devices that are connected to at least one of a first contactor, a second contactor, one of N fuses, and one of N vehicle loads. A battery management module is configured to measure and store a plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system and to selectively operate the one or more supplemental protection devices in a coverage gap between first and second coverage areas handled by the first contactor and the second contactor and the N fuses based on a calibration function and/or calibration parameters. A telematics system selectively sends the plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system to a remote server and to receive at least one of a new calibration function and new calibration parameters for the vehicle from the remote server.

A system for use with a direct current fast-charging (DCFC) station includes a controller and battery system. The battery system includes first and second battery packs, and first, second, and third switches. The switches have ON/OFF conductive states commanded by the controller to connect the battery packs in a parallel-connected (P-connected) or series-connected (S-connected) configuration. An electric powertrain with one or more electric machines is powered via the battery system. First and second charge ports of the system are connectable to the station via a corresponding charging cable. The first charge port receives a low or high charging voltage from the station. The second charge port receives a low charging voltage. When the station can supply the high charging voltage to the first charge port, the controller establishes the S-connected configuration via the switches, and thereafter charges the battery system solely via the first charge port.

Adaptive fast-charging of multi-pack battery system in a mobile platform having dual charge ports

A protection system for a battery system includes a battery control module configured to selectively open at least one contactor to isolate the battery system from a load in response to a sensed current being greater than a first threshold and within a first current range, at least one fuse connected between first and second terminals of the battery system and configured to open to isolate the battery system from the load in response to the sensed current being greater than a second threshold and within a second current range that is greater than and offset from the first current range, and an auxiliary protection module configured to selectively form a short circuit between first and second terminals in response to the sensed current being greater than the first threshold, less than the second threshold, and within a coverage gap region between the first and second current ranges.

Apparatus and method for coordinating contactor-fuse system

A power control system for a battery system of a vehicle includes a first contactor, a second contactor, N fuses and N vehicle loads. An active sacrificial protection device includes a third contactor and a first fuse. The active sacrificial protection device is connected to a positive or negative terminal of the battery system. A current sensor is configured to sense a measured load current flowing through one of the first contactor and the second contactor. A battery management module is configured to selectively close the third contactor to reduce current flowing through one of the first contactor or the second contactor and selectively open the one of the first contactor or the second contactor after closing the third contactor.

A hybrid powertrain for an automobile includes a transmission adapted to provide power to wheels of the automobile, an engine adapted to provide power to an input shaft of the transmission, and an electric motor-generator unit adapted to provide power to the input shaft of the transmission, wherein the electric motor-generator is positioned within the transmission, coaxial with the transmission input shaft, the electric motor-generator being supported by and enclosed within a pump support of the transmission.

P2 hybrid transmission

A system to extend a towing range and maneuverability of an automobile vehicle during a towing operation includes a battery-electric-vehicle (BEV) having a vehicle energy pack providing operational energy to the BEV. A powered trailer is releasably connected to the BEV. A trailer module is provided with the powered trailer, the trailer module communicating between the powered trailer and the BEV. A propulsion unit is provided with the powered trailer and is in communication with trailer module and with the BEV using the trailer module. The propulsion unit enhances launch of the BEV and provides an acceleration assist to the BEV.

Battery-electric-vehicle assisted towing concept

An electrified drivetrain for a vehicle includes a first electric machine, a second electric machine, a clutch, an HVAC compressor, and a controller. The second electric machine is rotatably coupled to a geartrain, the first electric machine is rotatably coupled to the HVAC compressor, and is rotatably couplable to the geartrain via the clutch, and the clutch is operative in a first state and a second state. The first electric machine is rotatably coupled to the geartrain when the clutch is controlled to the first state, and is decoupled from the geartrain when the clutch is controlled to the second state. The controller is operatively connected to the first and second electric machines, the clutch, and the HVAC compressor to control operation of the electrified drivetrain. The first electric machine can be used as a heater element and to provide mechanical power to the drivetrain.

A V2V charging controller communicates data identifying a battery system charge state of the first BEV and a battery system charge state of the second BEV and selects between multiple available charging options.

The gearbox includes a housing; at least one planetary gear set; an input shaft in continuous connection with at least one sun gear; a first output shaft in continuous connection with a carrier; a second output shaft in continuous connection with a ring gear; and a plurality of brake clutches grounded to the housing and are selectively engageable in combinations to transfer a torque from the input shaft to at least one of the first output shaft and the second output shaft.

A vehicle powertrain includes a first power-source configured to generate a first power-source torque and a multiple speed-ratio transmission configured to transmit the first power-source torque to power the vehicle. The powertrain also includes a fluid coupling having a fluid pump shaft operatively connected to the first power-source and a turbine shaft operatively connected to the multi-speed transmission. The fluid coupling is configured to multiply the first power-source torque, and transfer the multiplied first power-source torque to the multiple speed-ratio transmission. The powertrain additionally includes a second power-source configured to generate a second power-source torque and a first torque transfer system configured to connect the second power-source to the first power-source. The powertrain further includes a second torque transfer system configured to connect the second power-source to the multi-speed transmission. A motor vehicle having such a powertrain is also envisioned.

Motor vehicle hybrid powertrain

A vehicle including a hybrid battery pack includes a first battery pack and a second battery pack. The first battery pack has a higher energy density than the second battery pack. The second battery pack has a higher power density than the first battery pack. A power inverter module is connected between the hybrid battery pack and a motor generator unit (MGU) that is connected to a powertrain of the vehicle. The power inverter module is configured to regulate power flow between the hybrid battery pack and the MGU. A battery management module is configured to: control switching of the power inverter module; selectively charge and discharge at least one of the first battery pack and the second battery pack; and selectively charge the first battery pack with power from the second battery pack.
