A phenylene ether oligomer composition is disclosed comprising, a phenylene ether oligomer having an external amine content of less than or equal to 1.5 weight percent; and a residual solvent in an amount of 10 to 10000 parts per million by weight, based on the weight of the phenylene ether oligomer composition; wherein the phenylene ether oligomer composition has an intrinsic viscosity of 0.03 to 0.13 deciliter per gram; a glass transition temperature of 135 to 175° C., or a combination thereof.

A method of making a poly(phenylene ether) comprises: in an exotherm period, continuous addition of oxygen and a monohydric phenol to a non-polar solvent and a polymerization catalyst comprising a metal salt, an amine, and a quaternary ammonium salt in a vessel, to form a polymerization mixture, wherein the oxygen and monohydric phenol are added in a mole ratio of 0.5:1 to 1.2:1; and cessation of the continuous addition of the monohydric phenol; and in a build period, continuation of oxygen addition until there is no further increase in viscosity of the polymerization mixture. A poly(phenylene ether) having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.5 to 2.0 deciliters per gram, measured in chloroform using an Ubbelohde capillary glass viscometer at 25&#xb0; C., a polydispersity of 1 to 10, and a unimodal molecular weight distribution, is made by the method.

A method for isolating a phenylene ether oligomer composition includes feeding a solution including a solvent and a phenylene ether oligomer into a thin film evaporator, forming a film on an interior surface of the thin film evaporator, and heating to devolatilize the solvent from the film, to provide a phenylene ether oligomer composition. The thin film evaporator includes cylindrical heating chamber and a rotor having one or more rotor blades, wherein an edge of the one or more rotor blades and the interior surface of the cylindrical heating chamber are separated by a distance of 0.5 to 3.5 millimeters. Phenylene ether oligomer compositions are also described.

Method for isolating a phenylene ether oligomer composition and phenylene ether oligomer composition

A poly(phenylene ether) can be prepared by a method that includes reacting 2,6-dimethylphenol in the presence of toluene, oxygen, copper ion, bromide ion, and N,N'-di-tert-butylethylenediamine to form a poly(phenylene ether). The mole ratio of 2,6-dimethylphenol to copper ion is 160:1 to 300:1, the mole ratio of N,N&#x2032;-di-tert-butylethylenediamine to copper ion is 1.5:1 to 3:1, and the mole ratio of atomic oxygen to 2,6-dimethylphenol is 0.9:1 to 1.5:1. The process can produce poly(phenylene ether) having a high molecular weight and a high incorporated amine content.

Disclosed herein is a method of making a 2-(2,3-epoxypropyl)phenol by reacting a 2-allylphenol with an oxidant in the presence of a catalyst. A 3-chromanol can be formed as a by-product. The method can be used to make 2-(2,3-epoxypropyl)-6-methylphenol. Transition metal catalysts and peroxide oxidants can be used. Also disclosed is a composition comprising 1 to 90 weight percent of a 2-(2,3-epoxypropylphenol, 5 to 90 weight percent of a 2-allylphenol, and 0 to 40 weight percent of a 3-chromanol, and in particular, a composition comprising 1 to 90 weight percent 2-(2,3-epoxypropyl)-6-methylphenol, 5 to 90 weight percent 2-allyl-6-methylphenol, and 0 to 40 weight percent 8-methyl-3-chromanol.
