Optical fiber cable having improved properties

The present invention relates to a composition that is extrudable and cross-linkable in air. The composition that is extrudable and cross-linkable in air comprises a mixture of a copolymer with an ethylenically-unsaturated compound and an unsaturated ester, a hydrolizable silane compound having no ethylenic unsaturation containing functional groups, and a thermoplastic polymer having no functional groups, said functional groups of the ester being selectively reactive with the functional groups of the silane compound. Such a composition is used to fabricate a material for insulating or sheathing a power cable, in particular a medium-voltage cable or a cable for working at a voltage of less than 20 kV. The invention also provides method enabling said composition to be cross-linked and power cables including insulation and/or a sheath containing the composition obtained by the method.

Composition having improved thermomechanical properties, and a method of cross-linking it

A process for dereticulating a cross-linked polymeric material, such as cross-linked polyethylene from scraps of electric cable coatings or from unused cable coatings through a mechanical mixing cycle, wherein the cross-linked material is subjected to a specific power per mass unit such as to induce shear stresses in the material itself and temperatures higher than pre-established minimum levels. At the end of this cycle the material goes back to a thermoplastic state that may be substantially regarded as thermoplastic; then, following granulation, cooling, drying and sacking, the material will be ready for re-use, either alone or mixed with virgin polymers, according to usual operating technologies for thermoplastic materials. Eventually, the mechanical mixing cycle may be preceeded by a preliminary crushing cycle of the cross-linked polymeric materials to be treated. Preferably, the mixing cycle is carried out in a twin-screw extruder with special screw and temperature profiles.

The composition is constituted by a mixture comprising a thermoplastic material, a hydrolysable silane compound, an elastomer, and a peroxide, said thermoplastic material and said silane compound carrying respective groups that react with each other. Composition that is extrudable and curable in air

The present invention concerns a joint for electrical cables comprising at least a first layer constituted by a mixture of a polymeric matrix and a filler which is constituted by polymer comprising functions in its monomer units which homogeneously distribute the electrical filed, surrounded externally and coaxially by a second layer constituted by an elastomer. The layers are intimately associated with each other with an adherence greater than or equal to 5 N.cm.sup.-1.

A fire-proofed material for an electric cable, said material including a matrix made of a copolymer of propylene and of ethylene, high-density polyethylene or thermoplastic polyester, a fire-proofing agent which is halogenated and is formed by a cyclic derivative of pentaerythritol, an aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic derivative which is stable at the extrusion temperature of the matrix and decomposes at a higher temperature and a mineral compound of antimony which is able to react with the bromine of the fire-proofing agent during combustion.
