A laparoscopic tool has a semicircular mid-portion with a center point and coinciding remote center of the robotic arm, to which the tool is mounted on a common axis located between straight proximal and straight distal sections. The straight proximal of the laparoscopic tool is rotatably mounted on a fixed side mount on surgical robotic arm. The robotic arm is disengaged from the surgical robot to allow manual location of the robotic arm to position the semicircular mid-portion through a percutaneous port and the center point of semi-circular mid-portion and coinciding remote center of the robotic arm, to which the tool is mounted at a target virtual insertion point on the patient's body. Visual aids are provided to assist in the positioning of the center point.

Methods and systems for robotic single-port laparoscopic access

A deformable seal for use together with a laparoscopic port has a deformable body with an upper region, a lower region, and a narrowed waist. A plurality of tool passing channels are individually formed in an axial direction through the deformable body, and each tool passing channel has a tool entrance on a surface of the upper region and a tool exit on a surface of the lower region. The tool passing channels are sufficiently elastic to conform to and seal about a shaft of a laparoscopic tool present in the channel and to close to inhibit leakage of an insufflation gases when the tool is removed from the tool passing channel.

Seal for laparoscopic access port

A flexible cable sheath includes an outer sleeve, an inner sleeve, and a flexible cable passing through the inner sleeve. The outer sleeve has a plurality of individual segments which are coupled to bend and have limited axial separation. By tensioning the inner sleeve relative to the outer sleeve, the resulting assembly has improved dimensional stability and torsional rigidity.

Cable sheaths and assemblies for use in curved medical and other tools

A system for performing single port laparoscopic procedures includes a deployment frame and a plurality of tools. The tools are pivotally mounted on the frame and have end effectors which are translatably and rotatably disposed in the tool. A handle at the proximal end of the tool controls an end effector at the distal end of the tool. Movement of the tools relative to the frame is constrained so that they remain in a fixed geometric relationship which prevents the tools from interfering with each other during laparoscopic procedures.

Single port laparoscopic access system with external tool support

A system for performing single port laparoscopic procedures includes a transcutaneous seal and a plurality of tools. The tools comprise a substantially rigid tubular seal having a core which is translatably and rotatably disposed in the sleeve. The handle at the proximal end of the tool controls an end effector at the distal end of the tool. The sleeves of the tools are locked in the transcutaneous seals so that they remain in a fixed geometric relationship which prevents the tools from interfering with each other during laparoscopic procedures.

Single port laparoscopic access with laterally spaced virtual insertion points

An expansible tunneling apparatus and associated methods for creating an anatomic working space for a surgical procedure. Various apparatus permitting observation during tunneling and balloon dissection are disclosed. In one embodiment, a tubular member has a bore extending therethrough and an open distal end. A lip is formed in the distal end of the tubular member to capture the distal tip of a laparoscope inserted into the tubular member to permit observation of the procedure during tunneling to a desired location and balloon inflation. An elongated neck of the balloon is secured to the tunneling member, and permits the tubular member to be withdrawn slightly from the balloon after inflation to facilitate observation. After the balloon has been advanced to the desired location in the body it is inflated to dissect tissue and create an operating space. Various balloon constructions and a reusable design are also disclosed.

Apparatus and method for dissecting tissue layers

An apparatus for creating an anatomic space in tissue in a body comprises an introducer and a sheath. The tubular sheath may surround the introducer, and may have a weakened region along its longitudinal axis. A handle may be provided on the sheath. The handle may be adapted to be pulled proximally to separate the weakened region and allow the sheath to be removed from the introducer. The sheath may be secured to the introducer via detents or latches on the handle.

Apparatus and method for developing an anatomic space for laparoscopic hernia repair and patch for use therewith

A laparoscopic apparatus for tunneling dissection including a hollow tunneling member and an inflatable balloon disposed at the distal end of the tunneling member to form together a blunt tipped obturator. The tunneling member has a bore sized allow the insertion of a conventional laparoscope therein to provide observation during surgical procedures. The laparoscope provides direct observation of dissection through the open distal end of the tunneling member. Observation is provided both when the device is used to tunnel between tissue layer to a region of interest within the body of a patient, and during subsequent balloon inflation when the tissue layers are dissected to cause separation of the tissue layers and the creature of an anatomical working space. After the anatomic space has been created, the device and laparoscope are withdrawn through the incision. If needed, a trocar can be inserted into the incision to provide access back to the previously created space where the surgical procedure is to be performed. The anatomic working space may be insufflated with an insufflation gas if required for the particular procedure. The apparatus is prepared for use by inserting the tunneling member into the interior of the balloon forming the balloon into a generally cylindrical roll about the tunneling member, and preferably, through the use of an integral balloon cover, securing the balloon roll to the tunneling member to form a semi-rigid blunt tipped obturator.

Apparatus and method for developing an anatomic space for laparoscopic procedures with laparoscopic visualization

Laparoscopic apparatus and method for insertion into a space or potential space in a body comprising an introducer device having a tubular member with a bore extending therethrough. A tunneling shaft assembly is provided and is slidably mounted in the bore of the introducer device. The tunneling shaft assembly includes a tunneling shaft having proximal and distal extremities. A tunneling member is mounted on the distal extremity of the tunneling shaft. A balloon assembly is provided which is removably secured to the tunneling shaft. The balloon assembly includes a balloon wrapped about said tunneling shaft. A sheath is provided which encloses the balloon on the tunneling shaft. The sheath has a slit extending longitudinally thereof permitting the sheath to be removed whereby the balloon can be released and inflated. A tubular member is provided which has a balloon inflation lumen thereon and is coupled to the balloon for inflating said balloon.
