A control device is provided that acquires an estimated value of a waste gate valve opening, derives a first relation which is established between a throttle downstream pressure and an intake valve flow rate based on the estimated value, and derives a second relation which is established between the throttle downstream pressure and the throttle flow rate from a throttle model based on a measured value of a throttle opening and a measured value of a throttle upstream pressure. Subsequently, the control device calculates an estimated value of the intake valve flow rate based on the first relation and the second relation, and regulates a correspondence relation of the estimated value of the waste gate valve opening and the manipulated variable of the waste gate valve based on a comparison result of the estimated value of the intake valve flow rate and a measured value of an intake flow rate.

The present invention aims to provide a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine that can precisely determine the presence or absence of blow-by of fresh air into an exhaust path in the internal combustion engine with a supercharger. A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine according to the present invention includes: a supercharger; an intake pipe pressure obtaining unit that detects or estimates an intake pipe pressure; an intake variable valve apparatus capable of changing a valve timing of an intake valve; an exhaust variable valve apparatus capable of changing a valve timing of an exhaust valve; a storing unit that stores information about a reference intake pipe pressure that is a value that depends on the valve timing of the intake valve but does not depend on the valve timing of the exhaust valve; a reference intake pipe pressure obtaining unit that obtains the reference intake pipe pressure for the valve timing of the intake valve; and a blow-by determining unit that determines the presence or absence of blow-by of fresh air into an exhaust side based on a result of comparison between the intake pipe pressure and the reference intake pipe pressure.

The invention minimizes the man-hours required to develop a map that estimates the torque of an internal combustion engine. The method according to the invention includes making a torque estimation model that defines the relation between indicated torque and characteristic values that represent the flow of gas and the combustion state in an internal combustion engine; determining the value of a parameter that relates to a heat-generation rate (dQ/d&#x3b8;), which is the rate of change in a heating value Q in a cylinder with respect to the crank angle &#x3b8;, based on an operating condition of the engine; calculating the heat-generation rate under the desired operating condition; estimating the indicated torque of the internal combustion engine with the torque estimation model, using the heat-generation rate. The method according to the invention results in more accurate control over the operating state of an internal combustion engine.
