A method for operating a gas turbine system using low-Btu gaseous fuel is disclosed in which air compressed in a compressor unit to obtain a compressed gas stream and low-Btu gaseous fuel and said fuel is combusted with the compressed gas stream both supplied to said combustion unit, thereby obtaining hot product gas. The hot product gas supplied thereto is expanded to drive an expansion turbine unit to generate mechanical power.

The invention is a process for quenching a first synthesis gas mixture containing synthesis gas, molten flyash, water, and carbon dioxide and producing additional synthesis gas consisting of (a) passing the first synthesis gas mixture into a first quench zone; (b) introducing into the quench zone a mixture of a liquid carbonaceous quenching medium in a nitrogen or carbon dioxide carrier gas; (c) endothermically reacting the liquid carbonaceous quenching medium with the water and the carbon dioxide in the synthesis gas mixture, thus producing additional synthesis gas consisting of hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and wherein the additional synthesis gas is admixed with the first synthesis gas mixture to form a second synthesis gas mixture; (d) passing the second synthesis gas mixture to a second quench zone; (e) introducing into the second quench zone a cooling gas for admixture with the second synthesis gas mixture, thus cooling the second synthesis gas mixture, where the molten flyash is solidified, and thus forms a third synthesis gas mixture; and (f) passing the third synthesis gas mixture to a solids removal stage for removing the solidified flyash.

Method of quenching synthesis gas

A method for starting up a partial combustion process, using a burner, wherein finely divided carbon-containing fuel is supplied to a reactor or gasifier and an oxygen-containing gas is supplied separately from the said fuel to the reactor or gasifier and is mixed with the said fuel adjacent the outlet of the burner in the reactor or gasifier. During a predetermined period a low rank particulate carbon-containing fuel is supplied to the reactor prior to the start of the partial combustion process, said low rank fuel spontaneously reacting with oxygen when brought into contact with the said oxygen-containing gas and subsequently switching the burner to a less reactive finedly divided carbon-containing fuel.

A process and burner for the partial combustion of a finely divided solid fuel with oxygen. A core of oxygen-containing gas and an annulus of finely divided solid fuel surrounding said core are introduced into a reactor space via a burner. The solid fuel is centrally introduced into the burner, whereas oxygen-containing gas is separately introduced into the burner outside the central solid fuel. In the burner the solid fuel is caused to flow outwardly and the oxygen-containing gas is caused to flow inwardly for supplying the solid fuel as an annulus around the oxygen-containing gas into the reactor space.
