Among the methods described herein are methods using low-specific gravity particulates wherein the particulates comprise silica and an aluminum oxide in an amount of about 0.1% to about 25% by weight and having at least one void, a specific gravity of less than about 2.2, a particle sized of 8 U.S. Mesh or smaller, and a substantially spherical shape.

Methods of using particulates in subterranean operations

An assembly for constructing a monodiameter wellbore includes a bottomhole assembly having a overgauge hole drilling member, a directional steering assembly, a measurement while drilling tool, and a logging while drilling tool; a work string attached to the bottomhole assembly and extending to the surface; drilling fluids flowing through the work string and bottomhole assembly; chemical casing casing the borehole; expandable casing disposed in the wellbore; and a sealing composition disposed between the expandable casing and the wellbore.

Method and apparatus for a monodiameter wellbore, monodiameter casing, monobore, and/or monowell

The present invention involves reduced specific gravity particulates and their use in subterranean applications such as production enhancement and completion. One embodiment of the present invention provides particulates comprising silica and an aluminum oxide and at least one void and having a specific gravity of less than about 2.2, a particle size of 8 U.S. Mesh or smaller, and a substantially spherical shape. Other embodiments of the present invention provide for using such particulates in subterranean operations such as fracturing and gravel packing.

Particulates comprising silica and alumina, and methods of utilizing these particulates in subterranean applications

A bottom hole assemblyfor drilling a deviated borehole includes a positive displacement motor (PDM)or a rotary steerable device (RSD)having a substantially uniform diameter motor housing outer surface without stabilizers extending radially therefrom. In a PDM application, the motor housingmay have a fixed bend therein between an upper power sectionand a lower bearing section. The long gauge bitpowered by the motormay have a bit facewith cuttersthereon and a gauge sectionhaving a uniform diameter cylindrical surface. The gauge sectionpreferably has an axial length at least 75% of the bit diameter. The axial spacing between the bit face and the bend of the motor housing preferably is less than twelve times the bit diameter. According to the method of the present invention, the bit may be rotated at a speed of less than 350 rpm by the PDM and/or rotation of the RSD from the surface.

Steerable drilling system and method

A borehole may be drilled utilizing the bottom hole assemblywith a downhole motor, which may offset at a selected bend angle. A bend for directional drilling may be provided by a PDM, or by a RSD. A gauge sectionsecured to the pilot bithas a uniform diameter bearing surface along an axial length of at least 60% of the pilot bit diameter. The bit or reamerhas a bit face defining the cutting diameter of the drilled hole. The axial spacing between the bend and the bit face is controlled to less than fifteen times the bit diameter. The downhole motor, pilot bit and bit may be retrieved from the well while leaving the casing string in the well.

Drilling with casing

A borehole may be drilled utilizing the bottom hole assemblywith a downhole motor, which may offset at a selected bend angle. A gauge sectionis secured to the bithas a uniform diameter bearing surface along an axial length of at least 60% of the bit diameter. The axial spacing between the bend and the bit face is controlled to less than fifteen times the bit diameter. After drilling a section of the well with the BHA according to the present invention, a tubular may be inserted in the well by passing the tubular through an upper tubular, then the inserted tubular expanded while downhole to a diameter substantially equal to the expanded tubular.

Expanded liner system and method

An improved system and method is disclosed for expanding a fluid permeable tubular downhole in an open hole completion. A high quality borehole is first drilled using a bottomhole assembly having a long gauge bit and a short bit-to-bend ratio. A fluid-permeable tubular is then inserted into an open-hole portion of the wellbore and preferably expanded in place. The expandable tubular may include an external filtering medium. Hydrocarbons may pass from the formation through the expanded fluid permeable tubular and into the borehole, to be recovered.

Expanded downhole screen systems and method

Methods and compositions are provided for sealing an expandable tubular in a wellbore wherein the methods basically comprise placing the expandable tubular in the wellbore, placing a resilient sealing composition into the wellbore, expanding the expandable tubular and allowing the sealing composition to set in the wellbore.

Methods and systems for collecting, managing, distributing and updating geophysical data primarily for E&P companies include in one embodiment the sale of subscriptions entitling paid subscribers access to all subscribed data including both preview and full data. Initial and subsequent data providers are preferably compensated from subscriber fees and may be compensated based on relative subscriber use of data. Data subscriptions can include for subscribers the right to vote or otherwise provide input relating to desired data updates. Data updates are preferably purchased based on competitive bids. The inventive systems and methods diminish much of the risk and uncertainty associated with the collection, management, distribution and updating of geophysical data under current methodologies, making the process more efficient and cost-effective for participating parties.

The downhole motor, pilot bit and bit may be retrieved from the well while leaving the casing string in the well.

A method for improving ROP and reducing hazards in drilling subterranean wells by using an acoustical system to look ahead of the drill bit , detects and analyzes geologic features ahead of the bit which may be qualified as drilling hazards . Detection of such hazards may facilitate use of more aggressively penetrating bits such as PDC bits as opposed to roller cone bits. In addition, other drilling parameters may be adjusted to improve ROP due to the ability to timely respond to identified hazards before they may be detrimentally encountered by the bit . The acoustic system may look ahead of the bit by at least 100 meters, using propagated acoustic waves to locate changes in acoustic impedance which may represent drilling hazards . In addition, bulk resistivity ahead of the bit may also be measured and used to locate drilling hazards . The measured properties of the investigated formation may facilitate optimizing the design and operation of a drilling program so as to improve the rate of penetration.
