A vacuum fluorescent display comprises a plurality of filaments or filament sets, a controller, and a display portion. The controller controls one of the filaments or filament sets to be alternately connected to a power supply so as to emanate electrons as an electron source. Thus, a predetermined pattern can be displayed on the display portion in response to the electrons. The fact that the filaments or filament sets are alternately powered to induce hot-electron emanation can reduce the overall power consumption for the vacuum fluorescent display.

The design of a large area display made up of a plurality of field emission display modules is described. The modules have been modified in several ways relative to prior art designs. The cathode and gate lines near the module's edge have been substantially shortened. This feature, in combination with the use of a rabbet joint for attaching thinner than usual edge plates, allows the modules to be butted up against each other such that pixels in adjoining modules are no further apart than pixels in the same module. Because of the thinner edge plates and the general compatibilty of the process, the use of internal supports between the front and rear plates becomes mandatory. Vacuum piping for the modules is located near an edge in dark space or under a green pixel, with the gettering layer being formed inside the piping. The modules all plug into a printed circuit board which includes a custom chip for driving the display.

A one-piece grid assembly for use in an electron gun for a miniature cathode-ray tube application that consists of a core made of an electrically insulating material, a first grid deposited on the core, and a second grid deposited on the core that is spaced apart from the first grid, and a method of making the one-piece grid assembly by first compression molding the core and then depositing the grid by plating are disclosed.

Improved luminous efficiency in plasma displays has been achieved by coating phosphor particles with a dielectric layer having a refractive index, for the ultraviolet light emitted by the plasma, that is intermediate between that of the phosphor and vacuum. When deposited in a thickness range between 0.5 and 5 microns, the layer causes the particle's reflectivity to be reduced because of reduced reflection at the vacuum-coating interface as well as internal reflection at the coating-vacuum interface. For coating thicknesses in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 microns, reflectivity is reduced because of interference between rays reflected at the vacuum-coating interface and the coating-phosphor interface. Several methods for forming these antireflection coatings are described. These include CVD, PVD, and suspension in molten dielectric followed by decanting onto either sticky or non-stick surfaces.

A photoprinter is described, including a print head comprising parallel substrates. The bottom substrate supports an array of microtips that rest on cathode columns. Gate lines, orthogonally disposed relative to the cathode columns are located at the top level of the microtips and have openings through which the microtips can emit electrons, due to field emission, which bombard a nearby conductive phosphor layer, thereby emitting light. A bundle of transparent fibers, cast in a suitable medium, are permanently and transparently attached to the upper surface of the top substrate and are in one to one alignment with the microtips. The far side of the fiber bundle may be ground and polished to fit the contours of a rotatable photosensitive drum. A method for manufacturing the print head is also provided.

Field emission based print head

A fluorescent lamp with multiple fluorescent surfaces including a hollow outer tube of any desirable shape, and at least one transparent inner tube or plate-like structure of any shape disposed inside the outer tube. The filaments are mounted at each end of the outer tube. The outer tube is filled with mercury vapor when it is in a vacuum state (less than 10.sup.-3 torr). The inner and outer wall surfaces of the inner tube or plate-like structure and the inner wall surface of the outer tube are all coated with fluorescent materials. When the filaments are supplied with electric currents to release electrons which collide with the mercury molecules to generate ultra-violet rays, much more fluorescent materials will be reached by the ultra-violet rays to generate visible light, thus increasing the luminosity of the fluorescent lamp. A method of manufacturing the fluorescent lamp is also disclosed.

A method of evacuating and sealing a cathode ray tube, CRT, using softened glass frit to seal the exhaust hole through which the CRT is evacuated. A three way branch tube allows a shaft driven by a linear motion means to cover the exhaust hole with a sealing plug or plate and softened vitreous glass frit while the CRT is being evacuated. In one embodiment a getter is also used. Since the CRT is being evacuated when the vitreous glass frit is softened any gases evolved from the softened glass frit are removed by the vacuum pump and are not a problem to the sealed CRT.

A method for forming a layer of particles on a substrate, such as a layer of phosphor particles on the inside of a CRT, is described. The depends on the use of a double-sided adhesive tape comprising a laminate of a dry adhesive between two protective layers. One of the protective layers is stripped away to expose one surface of the dry adhesive layer which is then pressed up against the substrate surface using a method such as rolling or autoclaving to bring about bubble-free adhesion. The other protective layer is then stripped away, thereby exposing the other surface of the adhesive layer. The particles that will comprise the final layer are then applied to the exposed adhesive surface by means of dusting. This is followed by the removal of any weakly adhering particles from the final particle layer. Finally, the dry adhesive layer is itself removed by means of a heat treatment, leaving in place a uniform layer of particles adhering to the substrate surface.
