A method for forming images on a non-reactive substrate such as plain paper is disclosed, comprising the steps of: image-wise exposing an imaging sheet, said imaging sheet comprising a support having a layer of photosensitive microcapsules on the surface thereof, said microcapsules containing a photohardenable or photosoftenable composition including a photoinitiator, and a color precursor; assembling said image-wise exposed imaging sheet with a developer-donor sheet; subjecting said assembly to a uniform rupturing force to cause said photosensitive microcapsules to rupture and transfer an image-wise pattern of said color precursor to said developer-donor sheet thereby forming an image thereon; separating said imaging sheet from said developer-donor sheet; assembling said developer-donor sheet bearing said image with a sheet of plain paper to form a second assembly; and subjecting said second assembly to heat and a uniform force to transfer said developer to said non-reactive substrate.

A method for forming images on plain paper is disclosed, comprising the steps of: image-wise exposing an imaging sheet, said imaging sheet comprising a support having a layer of photosensitive microcapsules on the surface thereof, said microcapsules containing a photohardenable or photosoftenable composition including a photoinitiator, and a color precursor; assembling said image-wise exposed imaging sheet with a sheet of plain paper; subjecting said assembly of said imaging sheet and said plain paper to a uniform rupturing force to cause said photosensitive microcapsules to rupture and transfer an image-wise pattern of said color precursor to said plain paper thereby forming a latent image thereon; separating said imaging sheet from said plain paper; assembling said plain paper bearing said latent image with a developer-donor sheet comprising a support having a layer of a developer on the surface thereof to form a second assembly; subjecting said second assembly to a uniform force to transfer said developer to said plain paper bearing said latent image whereupon said developer reacts with said color precursor to form a visible image.

Method for image developing on plain paper utilizing a developer-donor

A method for producing images utilizing photohardenable microcapsules and a reversal phenomenon is disclosed. The microcapsules contain a color former, a photopolymerizable or cross-linkable monomer and a photoinitiator. A substrate containing the microcapsules is image-wise exposed to a high intensity, short term exposure of actinic radiation to cause reversal in the exposed microcapsules. The substrate is then given an overall exposure to polymerize the microcapsules which had not completely reversed. The microcapsules are then ruptured in the presence of a developer material to produce a negative image. In addition the inventive method may be used to produce copies by a 'direct-write' copying process.

A method for treating an imaging sheet is disclosed. The method includes the steps of providing an imaging sheet having coated on one of its surfaces a layer of microcapsules, the microcapsules containing a radiation curable composition and having an image-forming agent associated therewith, heating the sheet; and image-wise exposing the layer of microcapsules to actinic radiation; wherein the heating step is performed prior to or after the image-wise exposing step. The method reduces or removes damage defects on the imaging sheet and, in some instances, extends the dynamic range of the image-forming agents.
