A contact insulator for use with high speed cable with differential pairs of contacts. A contact receiving portion has contact receiving slots which open from a first side of the contact insulator. A conductor receiving portion has conductor receiving slots which open from a second side of the contact insulator. A transition portion is positioned between the contact receiving portion and the conductor receiving portion. The transition portion has a contact receiving opening which extends through the contact insulator. The contact receiving opening is dimensioned to allow the contacts to be inserted therethrough. The contact insulator is rotated about the contacts and signal conductors of the high speed cable to position the contacts in the contact receiving slots through the first side of the contact insulator and position the signal conductor in the conductor receiving slots through the second side of the contact insulator.

Contact insulators for use with differential pairs of contacts and method of termination

An assembly for terminating a high speed cable. The assembly includes a shell housing and preassembled crosstalk shield. The shell housing has a mating end and a conductor receiving end, One or more shield receiving recesses extend from the conductor receiving end toward the mating end. The preassembled crosstalk shield has mounting projections which are positioned in the one or more shield receiving recesses. The mounting projections and the one or more shield receiving recesses provide an interference engagement to provide a secure mechanical and electrical connection between the shell housing and the preassembled crosstalk shield.

An assembly for terminating a high speed cable with an EMI braided shield, The assembly a shell housing, a crosstalk shield and a constant force spring. The shell housing has a mating end and a conductor receiving end. A recessed portion is provided proximate the conductor receiving end, the recessed portion has an outer diameter. The crosstalk shield is provided in the shell housing. The constant force spring is positioned in the recessed portion of the shell housing. The constant force spring has an opening with an inner diameter which is less than the outer diameter of the recessed portion. The constant force spring is circumferentially wrapped about the EMI braided shield to mechanically and electrically secure the EMI braided shield to the recessed portion of the shell housing.

A cable connector includes an outer shell having a bore extending between a mating end and a cable end. The outer shell has latch pockets. The cable connector includes a shield received in the outer shell that divides the bore into chambers. The cable connector includes contact holders received in corresponding chambers. Each contact holder includes at least one contact channel and a deflectable latch having a latching head at a distal end of the latch configured to be received in the corresponding latch pocket of the outer shell to axially secure the contact holder in the outer shell. The latch has an interference bump at an inner end of the latch configured to engage the shield to press the latching head of the latch outward. The cable connector includes contacts received in corresponding contact channels of the corresponding contact holders.

An electrical connector with an insert assembly used to retain contact in an electrical connector. The insert assembly includes a rear insert and a front insert. The rear insert has a rear insert front surface, a rear insert rear surface and a rear insert outer surface. The rear insert outer surface extends between the rear insert front surface and the rear insert rear surface. Rear insert contact-receiving openings extend from the rear insert front surface to the rear insert rear surface. Latches are provided in the rear insert outer surface and are provided in alignment with respective rear insert contact-receiving openings. The latches are integrally formed in the rear insert outer surface. The latches are positioned proximate to the rear insert contact-receiving openings thereby allowing the latches to deform into the rear insert contact-receiving openings.

A rotary crimping tool assembly includes a tool housing defining a crimping chamber, and one or more crimp wheels within the crimping chamber. The crimping chamber is configured to receive the portion of the structure in proximity to the crimp wheel(s). The crimp wheel(s) are configured to be pressed into and rotated relative to the portion of the structure to form one or more crimps in the portion of the structure.

An electrical connector and system for connecting to a terminal post. The electrical connector includes a housing body, a contact and a locking release member. The housing body includes a post receiving passage for receiving the terminal post therein. The contact is provided in the post receiving passage and is positioned about the circumference of the post receiving passage. The contact will make an electrical engagement with a terminal post inserted into the post receiving passage regardless of the orientation of the terminal post with respect to the contact. The electrical connector which prevents the improper mating of the connector to the post, prevents unwanted rotation of the connector, provides a visual indication that the proper connection is secured and provides a secondary lock to ensure that unwanted unmating of the connector does not occur.

An electrical connector includes a housing having a cavity. A wafer stack is received in the cavity. The wafer stack includes a plurality of electrical wafers arranged parallel to each other within the cavity. Each wafer includes a first edge and a second edge. Each wafer includes at least one trace between the first and second edges. The electrical connector includes a flex harness including a plurality of flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs). The FPCBs are electrically connected to corresponding wafers.

A receptacle assembly includes a front housing configured for mating with a header assembly and a contact module coupled to the front housing. The contact module includes a conductive holder having a first side wall and an opposite second side wall. The conductive holder has a chamber between the first and second side walls. The conductive holder has a front coupled to the front housing. The contact module includes a frame assembly that is received in the chamber. The frame assembly includes a plurality of contacts and a dielectric frame that supports the contacts. The contacts extend from the conductive holder for electrical termination. A plurality of ground clips are received in the chamber and extend from the front of the conductive holder. The ground clips are mechanically and electrically connected to the conductive holder.

Grounding structures for header and receptacle assemblies

A wafer assembly of an electrical connector system may include a metal center ground plane and a plurality of plastic ribs overmolded on the metal center ground plane. The plastic ribs may be positioned in a configuration that forms a plurality of electrical contact channels on the metal center ground plane. An array of electrical contacts may be positioned substantially within the plurality of electrical contact channels. In some implementations, the electrical connector system may also include a wafer housing and a header module that include guidance components that align the header module with the wafer housing when the wafer housing mates with the header module. The electrical connector system may also include a power contact that passes through aligned openings in the wafer housing and the header module to provide a power transmission path between the first substrate and the second substrate.

Electrical connector system

An electrical connector system may include a center housing that defines a plurality of first electrical contact channels on a first side face of the center housing and a plurality of second electrical contact channels on a second side face of the center housing. A first array of electrical contacts is positioned substantially within the plurality of first electrical contact channels on the first side face of the center housing. A second array of electrical contacts is positioned substantially within the plurality of second electrical contact channels on the second side face of the center housing. The first array of electrical contacts is paired with a third array of electrical contacts to form a first plurality of differential pairs of electrical contacts. The second array of electrical contacts is paired with a fourth array of electrical contacts to form a second plurality of differential pairs of electrical contacts.

A connector system includes a header connector, a mating connector, and a conductive grounding bridge. The header connector includes a conductive shell that defines an interior chamber and a contact disposed in the interior chamber. The mating connector includes a conductive member and an electromagnetic shield joined to a housing. The shield has an elongated protrusion extending from the shield to an outer end. The header connector and the mating connector couple with each other such that the contact engages the conductive member and the protrusion engages the shell. The grounding bridge is joined to one of the header connector and the mating connector and engages another of the header connector and the mating connector when the protrusion engages the shell. The protrusion is electrically coupled with the shell at the outer end of the protrusion and by the grounding bridge.

Connector system with electromagnetic interference shielding

High-speed backplane connectors systems for mounting a substrate that are capable of operating at speeds of up to at least 25 Gbps, while in some implementations also providing pin densities of at least 50 pairs of electrical connectors per inch are disclosed. Implementations of the high-speed connector systems may provide ground shields and/or ground structures that substantially encapsulate electrical connector pairs, which may be differential electrical connector pairs, in a three-dimensional manner throughout a backplane footprint, a backplane connector, and a daughtercard footprint. These encapsulating ground shields and/or ground structures prevent undesirable propagation of non-traverse, longitudinal, and higher-order modes when the high-speed backplane connector systems operates at frequencies up to at least 30 GHz.

An electrical connector system may include multiple wafer assemblies configured to engage with a substrate. A ground strip of the electrical connector system may be coupled with a first wafer assembly and a second wafer assembly. The ground strip is configured to engage with the substrate and provide a common ground potential between the first wafer assembly, the second wafer assembly, and the substrate.
