Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, detecting whether a bandwidth capacity loss occurs on a first link bundle connecting one or more first core routers of a core Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) network with one or more first provider routers, resulting in a detected capacity loss, wherein communication between the one or more first core routers of the core IGP network and the one or more first provider routers utilizes a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), wherein a second link bundle connects one or more second core routers of the core IGP network with one or more second provider routers, and wherein communication between the one or more second core routers of the core IGP network and one or more second provider routers utilizes the BGP; responsive to the detected capacity loss, automatically increasing a cost associated with selected network traffic that was to be carried between the one or more first provider routers and the one or more first core routers of the core IGP network and that will instead be re-directed for communication via the second link bundle; and causing communication via the second link bundle of the selected network traffic, wherein the communication via the second link bundle of the selected network traffic is between the one or more second provider routers and the one or more second core routers of the core IGP network. Systems and methods to optimize routing in BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) networks

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, predicting dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) path outage prediction and recommendation of alternate communication paths. Parameterized DWDM signals are launched, and resulting network characteristics are determined. The parameters and characteristics are used to train one or more machine learning models subsequently used to predict outages and recommend alternate paths. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, identifying network elements of a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) domain of an optical waveguide communication system that includes a group of optical-add-drop multiplexor (OADM) devices. Operations are observed for the WDM domain configured to deliver communication services configured for simultaneously transporting independent signals across a network of single optical waveguides. A demand for optical waveguide communication services is determined and the WDM network is configured according to the optical fiber communication link requirement and according to the observations. The configured WDM network includes at least one OADM device of the group of OADM devices configured to provide a WDM cross-frequency network path of the configured WDM network.
