A method for offloading volume space reclamation operations to virtual tape systems is disclosed herein. In certain embodiments, such a method includes writing instruction information to a virtual tape system for use in performing a reclamation operation on a source virtual tape volume. The instruction information identifies the source virtual tape volume as well as valid objects in the source virtual tape volume. The virtual tape system then transforms the source virtual tape volume by retaining valid objects in the source virtual tape volume, removing invalid objects in the source virtual tape volume, and updating metadata associated with the source virtual tape volume to reflect changes made thereto. This generates an updated source virtual tape volume of reduced size. A corresponding computer program product and system are also disclosed and claimed herein.

Offloading volume space reclamation operations to virtual tape systems

An apparatus and system are presented for utilizing tape storage media segmentation to improve data access performance. A segmented tape storage medium within a tape cartridge having a first and second segment is utilized. A selection module allows a user to select a user-defined capacity of the tape storage medium that is less than the usable capacity of the tape storage medium. The user-defined capacity allows the user to prefer improved data access over tape storage capacity. Data, when written to the tape, is written only within the user-defined capacity. Data may be written exclusively on the first segment or written on both the first segment and second segment allowing data access to be improved. In addition, the user-defined capacity may correspond to the full capacity of the tape storage media.

Apparatus, system, and method for utilizing tape media segmentation

An apparatus and system are disclosed for optimizing fast access data storage on segmented tape media. The apparatus, in one embodiment, is configured to selectively write data to a tape storage medium. The selection module may select data for storage as one of fast access and slower access. Fast access data may be stored on the first segment, or fast access portion, of a tape storage medium to provide optimal speed for data retrieval. Slower access data may be stored on the remaining available storage space of the tape storage medium. Additionally, read requests for fast access data may be accessed more quickly than read requests for slower access data. Thus, user data may be selected and written to a tape storage medium relative to a preferred access time.

Apparatus, system, and method for optimizing fast access data storage on segmented tape media

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for recovering multivolume data. In one embodiment, a backup module physically backs up a plurality of source volumes to plurality of backup volumes. A data set size module may also capture a data set size for a data set during the physical backup. A retrieval module retrieves metadata for the data set from a catalog. A location module locates the data set on the plurality of backup volumes using the metadata. A recovery module recovers the data set as a recovered data set from the plurality of backup volumes. In one embodiment, a verification module verifies that the recovered data set is successfully recovered.

Apparatus, system, and method for recovering a multivolume data set

A deterministic flushing of one or more storage data objects buffered within a storage data buffer to a storage medium involves a processing of a host data object including writing a storage data object corresponding to the host data object to the storage data buffer, and a flushing of the storage data object(s) buffered within the storage data buffer to the storage medium prior to or subsequent to (i.e., relative to) the writing of the storage data object corresponding to the host data object to the storage data buffer as a function of an occurrence determination of a storage data buffer flushing event. The deterministic flushing further involves a queuing of a host data buffer meta-data update request for later processing.

A method is disclosed for optimizing fast access data storage on segmented tape media. The apparatus, in one embodiment, is configured to selectively write data to a tape storage medium. The selection module may select data for storage as one of fast access and slower access. Disclosed is a system, method, and program for data backup. A backup copy of source data is created. A backup dataset inventory is created when the backup copy is created. The backup dataset inventory includes a backup dataset identifier and an originating source volume identifier for cach dataset of the source data. The backup copy is copied to a storage medium. A storage media inventory is created when copying the backup copy to the storage medium. The storage media inventory includes the originating source volume identifier and a storage media identifier for each dataset of the source data. This single backup scheme eliminates having to issue both image copies for individual dataset recovery, as well as, separate full volume dumps for recover of failed physical volumes or to recover an entire application.

Method, system, and program for data backup

A method of copying a body of source data is shown, with rapid creation of an a backup dataset inventory. While write operations to the source data are temporarily suspended, a backup manager conducts an instant virtual copy of the source data creating a backup copy. Also while write operations are being suspended, the backup manager captures contents of a source dataset inventory cross-referencing datasets in the source data and locations in the body of source data where the datasets are stored. After the copy operation completes and writes to the source data resume, the backup manager adds the captured backup contents to a backup dataset inventory cross-referencing datasets in the backup copy and locations where the backup copy datasets are stored in the backup copy.

In a data storage system with multiple output media types, each request to store a data object is automatically analyzed to select the optimal output media type. In choosing the output media type best suited to quickly and efficiently complete the storage requests, the storage system considers (1) attributes of the data object itself, such as its size, (2) any perceived urgency required to complete the data storage request, and (3) attributes of the system's storage devices, such as the availability of different output media types, presence of other storage requests queued for storage for each type, level of ongoing access of each storage type by concurrent storage tasks, delays to initiate storage such as mount/demount times, amount of storage space available in different output media types, and the like.

A data management system responds to migration requests by automatically invoking a shortcut migration process for suitable candidates. Suitability of candidate data is efficiently evaluated using, among other considerations, the presence or absence of an expedited access indicator for the data which is previously set when the data is recalled from backup storage. In the shortcut migration process, the system automatically reconnects a previously migrated copy of the data object, if available.

A data processing system includes a data storage subsystem containing a plurality of data storage devices for reading and writing data on a plurality of data storage volumes. The data processing system is controlled by software to perform a method for recycling the data storage volumes containing a percentage of still valid data and a percentage of invalid data by transferring the still valid data on a plurality of input data storage volumes to one or more output data storage volumes. In accordance with the recycling method, the data processing system assigns a selected number of the data storage devices as input devices and a selected number of the data storage devices as output devices in a predetermined input/output ratio of the form m:k, where m is the number of input devices and k is the number of output devices. The system then commences transferring still valid data from input volumes mounted on the input devices to output volumes mounted on the output devices. As each volume is transferred, the system monitors the data transfer efficiency from the input devices to the output devices and adjusts the input/output ratio based on the measured data transfer efficiency.

Dynamic reconfiguration of data storage devices to balance recycle

A procedure for the optimal processing of variable-cost actions such as encountered in the storage reclamation procedures for a multivolume data library. The procedure introduces a temporary processing queue to minimize idle processing capacity during the scanning and sorting of a large plurality of variable-cost actions such as the recycling of a plurality of data storage volumes each having a variable recycle processing cost related to the action of valid data remaining on the volume. Volumes (actions) are selected for the immediate queue according to a dynamically-adjusted threshold test for the processing cost. This processing cost threshold is dynamically adjusted to optimize the immediate queue in relation to the available processing capacity. After scanning and sorting all volumes according to recycle processing cost, the temporary (immediate) queue is updated to a final recycle processing queue by appending a sorted deferred queue to the remainder of the immediate queue. The procedure of this invention minimizes idle processing capacity during the queue-building interval, thereby optimizing the number of recovered data storage volumes released in a given time interval.
