A method of preparing an antimony-doped stannic oxide gas detecting film device responsive to the combustible constituents in an environment of interest is disclosed. Stannic oxide is structurally doped with antimony for use as a thick film gas detecting element.

Antimony-doped stannic oxide thick film gas sensor

An n-type semiconductor gas detecting element. The semiconductor oxide is bismuth molybdate having the composition Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3.3MoO.sub.3 and the gas detecting element formed therewith has high sensitivity to combustible gas. The detection of the combustible gases is based upon the change of electrical conductivity of a thick film of the semiconductor oxide detecting element resulting from the combustible gas component in an oxygen-containing atmosphere.

A method is disclosed for preparing a silicon carbide-coated substrate without subjecting the substrate to unnecessary thermal stress. A coating of a silicon carbide precursor polymer is placed on a substrate and the coating is subjected to a laser beam of sufficient energy to raise the temperature of the coating in the area of impingement of the laser beam to approximately 1200.degree. C. to 1600.degree. C. until the coating is converted into a silicon carbide ceramic material. The area of laser beam impingement is located in an inert atmosphere or vacuum while the reaction is taking place.

Method for making silicon carbide coatings

An improved thick film stannic oxide sensor is disclosed whereby the sensitivity of the sensor to CO is enhanced by the addition of a rare earth oxide to the sensor composition and the catalytic reactivity of the sensor, when contacted by a gas containing a reducing constituent, i.e., H.sub.2 or CO, and oxygen, is enhanced by employing RuCl.sub.3 or PtCl.sub.2 as a catalyst.

Thick film sensor for hydrogen and carbon monoxide

Disclosed is a method of making an .alpha.-hematite catalyst comprising condensing a ferric halide gas such as ferric chloride onto an inert metal oxide support such as alumina in the presence of moisture. The ferric chloride gas could be formed by reacting in iron source such as hematite with hydrogen chloride gas. The catalyst formed is less subject to erosion and is useful in the reduction of sulfur trioxide to sulfur dioxide.
