A bone anchoring device includes an anchoring element having a shaft and a head, a receiving part having a coaxial bore and a seat for receiving the head, a pressure element configured to be movable within the bore, and a preload element being positionable between the head and the pressure element. When the head is inserted in the receiving part, the head is pivotable with respect to the receiving part, and can be locked at an angle relative to the receiving part by the pressure element. The pressure element can assume a position relative to the receiving part where the pressure element and the preload element are in direct contact, and where the pressure element exerts a force onto the head via the preload element to maintain one of a plurality of releasable angular positions between the head and the receiving part by friction before locking the head.

A coupling assembly for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element, including a receiving part having first and second ends, a recess at the first end for the rod, and an accommodation space for a head of the bone anchoring element, the accommodation space having an opening at the second end to permit insertion of the head into the receiving part, a retainer element configured to be arranged at least partially in the accommodation space and to hold at least part of the head, and a spring element configured to be arranged at least partially in the accommodation space and to be compressed in an axial direction. The retainer element and the spring element are separate parts. When the retainer element and the spring element are in the accommodation space of the receiving part in a first position, the spring element extends into the recess of the receiving part.

Coupling assembly for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element, and polyaxial bone anchoring device

A coupling assembly for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element includes a receiving part with an accommodation space defining an opening for inserting and accommodating a head of the bone anchoring element, and a pressure element having a cap portion configured to hold the head. In an inserting position, the cap portion of the pressure element is expandable in the accommodation space of the receiving part, and a first retaining element is configured to prevent the pressure element from moving towards a first end of the receiving part. In a pre-locking position, the head is held in the cap portion of the pressure element and is pivotable in the receiving part, while the cap portion is restricted from expanding to prevent removal of the head, and where a second retaining element is configured to prevent the pressure element from moving from the pre-locking position towards the inserting position.

A coupling assembly for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element, and including a receiving part having a first end, a second end, and an accommodation space having an opening at the second end for inserting a head of the bone anchoring element, a pressure element insertable from the first end, positionable in the accommodation space, and configured to hold the head, the pressure element having at least one spring portion extending circumferentially around the pressure element and being radially compressible, and a rod receiving element separable from the pressure element, wherein in a first position, the spring portion is configured to engage an engagement structure at an inner wall of the receiving part to prevent movement of the pressure element towards the first end, and wherein the rod receiving element is configured to move the pressure element from the first position towards the second end.

An implant that is implantable between vertebrae includes a monolithic body with a first end and a second end opposite the first end, an outer surface extending axially from the first end to the second end, a plurality of teeth at the first end, each of the teeth extending axially away from the second end to a free end, and an abutment surface facing away from the second end that is positioned radially inwardly relative to at least one of the teeth. The abutment surface is recessed axially relative to the free ends of the teeth to an extent such that the abutment surface is configured to contact a vertebra when the implant is implanted. The monolithic body is configured to extend axially over a majority of an entire axial length of the implant.

The receiving part defines an accommodation space for accommodating a head of a bone anchoring element, the accommodation space having an opening for inserting the head. The coupling device further includes a pressure element arranged at least partially in the accommodation space, the pressure element having a flexible portion to clamp an inserted head, and a clamping element extending at least partially around the flexible portion of the pressure element. The clamping element is configured to move from a first position to a second position in which the clamping element exerts a clamping force onto the pressure element, where the movement includes rotating the clamping element around the central axis.

An anchoring element includes a shank for anchoring to bone and a separate head that is connectable to the shank. The head has an exterior surface with a spherically-shaped section and an unthreaded tool engagement surface that is engageable with a drive tool when the head and the shank are connected to one another.

A coupling device for coupling a rod to a bone anchor includes a receiving part having a central axis, a coaxial passage, and an engagement recess extending laterally into the passage, and a pressure member having an expandable portion to clamp the head, a radially outwardly facing surface, and an engagement surface extending from the radially outwardly facing surface. The engagement surface of the pressure member is recessed from an outer surface of the receiving part. The pressure member is movable axially from a first position towards a second position where the receiving part directly engages the pressure member to increase a compression force on the expandable portion for clamping an inserted head. The engagement surface of the pressure member is engageable through the engagement recess of the receiving part by the instrument to move the pressure member axially from the second position back towards the first position.

A polyaxial bone anchoring device includes a receiving part configured to be pivotably connected to a head of an anchoring element, the receiving part having a channel for receiving a rod and an accommodation space having an opening for accommodating the head, and a sleeve-like insert piece having a sleeve axis and a spherical segment-shaped outer surface portion. A polyaxial bone anchoring device includes a bone anchoring element having a head and a shaft, a receiving part having a head receiving portion, a rod receiving portion, and a bore having a bore axis, and a pressure member movable in the bore and having a first surface for engaging the head, wherein the pressure member is movable to a first position where friction between the first surface and the head generates a preload on the head to maintain the shaft at a temporary angular position relative to the receiving part, and wherein the pressure member is configured to engage the receiving part to generate a holding force for holding the pressure member at the first position without a positive lock, and wherein the pressure member is movable in and out of the first position by applying an axial force on the pressure member greater than the holding force.
