An implant that is implantable between vertebrae includes a monolithic body with a first end and a second end opposite the first end, an outer surface extending axially from the first end to the second end, a plurality of teeth at the first end, each of the teeth extending axially away from the second end to a free end, and an abutment surface facing away from the second end that is positioned radially inwardly relative to at least one of the teeth. The abutment surface is recessed axially relative to the free ends of the teeth to an extent such that the abutment surface is configured to contact a vertebra when the implant is implanted. The monolithic body is configured to extend axially over a majority of an entire axial length of the implant.

The coupling device further includes a pressure element arranged at least partially in the accommodation space, the pressure element having a flexible portion to clamp an inserted head, and a clamping element extending at least partially around the flexible portion of the pressure element. The clamping element is configured to move from a first position to a second position in which the clamping element exerts a clamping force onto the pressure element, where the movement includes rotating the clamping element around the central axis.

The engagement surface of the pressure member is recessed from an outer surface of the receiving part. The pressure member is movable axially from a first position towards a second position where the receiving part directly engages the pressure member to increase a compression force on the expandable portion for clamping an inserted head. The engagement surface of the pressure member is engageable through the engagement recess of the receiving part by the instrument to move the pressure member axially from the second position back towards the first position.

A polyaxial bone anchoring device includes a receiving part configured to be pivotably connected to a head of an anchoring element, the receiving part having a channel for receiving a rod and an accommodation space having an opening for accommodating the head, and a sleeve-like insert piece having a sleeve axis and a spherical segment-shaped outer surface portion. The head has a first position indication structure configured to engage a second position indication structure of the pressure member when the shank assumes a first angular position, and to disengage from the second position indication structure when the shank is at an angular position different from the first angular position. The second position indication structure is engageable with the first position indication structure without protruding into a profile defined by the head receiving recess.

A polyaxial bone anchoring device includes a bone anchoring element having a head and a shaft, a receiving part having a head receiving portion, a rod receiving portion, and a bore having a bore axis, and a pressure member movable in the bore and having a first surface for engaging the head, wherein the pressure member is movable to a first position where friction between the first surface and the head generates a preload on the head to maintain the shaft at a temporary angular position relative to the receiving part, and wherein the pressure member is configured to engage the receiving part to generate a holding force for holding the pressure member at the first position without a positive lock, and wherein the pressure member is movable in and out of the first position by applying an axial force on the pressure member greater than the holding force.

A coupling assembly for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element includes a receiving part having a first end, a second end, a recess having a bottom for receiving the rod, and an accommodation space having an opening at the second end of the receiving part for accommodating a head of the bone anchoring element, and a retainer element configured to be inserted into the receiving part from the first end and to hold at least part of the head, the retainer element having a first portion and a spring portion compressible in an axial direction attached to the first portion. When the retainer element is in the accommodation space in a first position, the spring portion extends in the axial direction from the first portion of the retainer element to an axial position between the first end of the receiving part and the bottom of the recess.

A bone anchoring device includes a receiving part including a rod receiving portion with a first end, a second end, and a U-shaped recess for receiving a rod, the recess defining two free legs, and a head receiving portion at the second end for introducing and clamping the head, and a locking ring configured to be arranged around the head receiving portion, the locking ring including an engagement structure for engagement with a tool, the engagement structure defining a width of the locking ring that is greater than a greatest width of the rod receiving portion, wherein the locking ring can assume a locking position exerting a greatest compressive force on the head receiving portion of the receiving part to lock an inserted head, and wherein the locking ring is movable out of the locking position towards the first end of the rod receiving portion.

A coupling assembly for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element includes a receiving part with an accommodation space defining an opening for inserting and accommodating a head of the bone anchoring element, and a pressure element having a cap portion configured to hold the head.
