A computerized electricity system for connecting loads to a power source, including: (a) an arc fault detecting sub-system having at least one module including: (i) a relay unit, electrically associated with a particular load, for connecting and disconnecting to a power source; (ii) a current source for measuring a current being delivered from the power source to the load, to produce a current measurement; (iii) an analog circuit for receiving the current measurement from the current sensor, and for producing an analog signal based on the current measurement, and a second signal for indicating a potential arc fault event, and (iv) a digital circuit for receiving the second signal from the analog circuit and producing data, and (b) a processing unit connected to each module, so as to receive data corresponding to the analog signal, and the data from the digital circuit, the processing unit for identifying the arc faults, and wherein the processing unit is configured to command the relay unit to disconnect the current in response to identifying the arc faults, and wherein the processing unit is configured to provide this command only if several pre-determined conditions are met, (I) after detection of the potential arc fault event, the current measurement remains substantially unchanged, and (II) after a detection of at least one addition potential arc fault event, the arc fault events are found to be acyclic.

Computerized electricity system having an arc fault detecting sub-system

A method and system for transferring a load from a first AC voltage source to a second AC voltage source. A temporary voltage source is connected to the load and to the first voltage source via a resistor. The first voltage source is disconnected from the load. The second voltage source is connected to the load. Finally, the temporary voltage source is disconnected from the load. The temporary voltage source may be independent of the first and second voltage sources, or may obtain voltage from the first or second voltage sources. The connecting and disconnecting is done by mechanical switches, by thyristors, or by mechanical switches and thyristors in parallel or in series.

Method and system for transferring a load between AC voltage sources

An apparatus for and method of evenly distributing an electrical load across an n-phase power distribution network. The current in each incoming phase and in each branch circuit is measured by a current sensor. The outputs of the current sensors are monitored by a processor. Associated with each branch circuit is a multi-pole switch and a conventional circuit breaker. Each switch is able of connecting its corresponding branch circuit to any incoming phase, and of disconnecting the branch circuit from all n phases. The processor periodically monitors currents flowing through each incoming phase and, based on branch circuit load conditions, reprograms the switches to keep the branch circuit loads evenly distributed across all three incoming phases. A further feature provides the pre-programmed, processor-controlled, changing of load connections, for example as a function of time-of-day; and to provide a 'priority list' for dropping loads in case of an overloaded power-line condition, and for subsequently reconnecting loads. A further feature provides telephone communication between the processor and the electric company, including the capability of transmitting information to the electric company. The capability of the electric company to make inquiries of the processor, e.g., concerning loading of each of the phases. The capability of the electric company to issue commands to the processor, e.g., to connect or to disconnect loads, and the capability of the electric company to remotely alter the programming the processor via the telephone connection and the ability to monitor electric power consumption.

Apparatus for and method of evenly distributing an electrical load

An electronic switch circuit for controlling a main circuit including a power source and a load, the electronic switch circuit including (a) an electromagnetic relay device including an electromagnet and at least two contacts, the electromagnetic relay device being connectable in series to the power source and the load of the main circuit; (b) a controlled semiconductor device being a part of the electronic switch circuit; (c) a semiconductor command circuit being connected to the semiconductor device, the semiconductor command circuit serving for controlling the operation of the controlled semiconductor device; (d) a relay command circuit being connected to the electromagnet of the electromagnetic relay device and to the semiconductor command circuit, the relay command circuit serving for controlling the relay device and the semiconductor command circuit; (e) an overload sensor serving for determining a current load flowing through the main circuit and for reporting the relay command circuit of a current overload; (f) a resistor being connected in series to the controlled semiconductor device; and (g) an inducer being connectable in series to the load, the inducer being positioned in close proximity to the electromagnet of the electromagnetic relay device; wherein when the contacts of the relay device are disconnected, the resistor which thereby experiences a higher current load, automatically signals the semiconductor command circuit, which in turn turns the controlled semiconductor device off; and further wherein when the inducer experiences a current load above a predetermined threshold the inducer generates an induction field of a magnitude sufficient to induce the electromagnet of the electromagnetic relay device to disconnect the contacts.

Electronic switch for quick, automatic response to current overloads

A control unit for controlling the temperature of a domestic water supply, comprising a temperature sensor for inserting into a water tank so as to produce a sensor signal representative of actual water temperature in a region of the temperature sensor and an electrical immersion heater for inserting into the water tank and energized by a source of electrical power. A setting device is adjusted by a user for setting a desired water temperature and producing a corresponding set signal, and a controllable switch is connected between the source of electrical power and the electrical immersion heater, and is responsive to the sensor signal and to the set signal for closing if the actual water temperature is lower than the desired water temperature and for opening if the actual water temperature is greater than the desired water temperature.
