A fluid working system such as a pump for displacing a working fluid such as hydraulic fluid or a motor using a working fluid is provided. The system may have a positive displacement machine which includes one or more working chamber with displacement means such as a cylinder with a reciprocating piston. There are also two or more fluid ports to allow the working fluid to flow into and out of the working chamber. The working fluid flows from one fluid port means to another either being forced to do so when pumped or moving the piston when functioning as an engine. The fluid working system has associated therewith a non-dead compliance volume of a material such as syntactic foam. This compliance volume acts to smooth any pressure fluctuations within the working fluid system.

Fluid working systems

A piston ring () for forming a seal between a piston () and piston housing (). The piston ring () has first and second orthogonal axes () and a body portion () which is resiliently deformable in the direction of the first axis () and is substantially rigid in the direction of the second axis ().

The invention relates to a method of venting a synthetically commutated hydraulic pump (). The connecting fluid conduits (), connecting said synthetically commutated hydraulic pump () with a fluid reservoir () is vented at least on start-up of the synthetically commutated hydraulic pump (), using a fluid intake device () that connects to a fixed displacement pump ().

A hydraulic control system that uses system pressure information and a rescaled operator input to command valve spool area to control actuator speed. The system uses soft sealing and/or soft pressure compensation.

Load dependent electronic valve actuator regulation and pressure compensation

The invention relates to a fluid distribution valve (), comprising at least a first fluid port (), a second fluid port () and a third fluid port (). These ports are connecting to a fluid distribution chamber (). The second fluid port () can be selectively connected to the first fluid port () and/or the third fluid port () through said distribution chamber (). The second fluid port () is arranged between the first fluid port () and the third fluid port ().

Fluid distribution valve

In open-circuit hydraulic systems (), the cross-sections of the supply lines () and input valves of the hydraulic pump () have to be large, so that sufficient flow flux can be provided. This hinders a reduction of the size of the pump and the whole hydraulic system. It is suggested that the supply flow () of a hydraulic pump () is charged by a second, charging pump (), to a mid-pressure level (). The cross-sections of the supply flow areas can thus be decreased.

Charged hydraulic system

If a hydraulic system has several modes of operation, in particular a mode with a high pressure demand (II) and a mode with a high fluid flow demand (II), the hydraulic fluid pump has to be built with an accordingly high fluid flow output. Such a pump is expensive. Therefore it is suggested, to provide two pumps. I.e. a controllable main pump () is provided, which supplies the hydraulic consumer () during phases (I) of high pressure demand. During phases (II) of high fluid flow demand, normally, relatively low pressures are sufficient. Therefore, it is suggested to provide a parallel boost pump (), which supplies the hydraulic consumer () in addition to the high pressure pump (), if a high fluid flow is needed. Excess fluid flow output is avoided by controlling the fluid output flow of main pump
