Photographic film, paper, etc. in sheet form is packaged in recyclable containers or cases for reuse by returning to suppliers for filling. Containers obviate disposal problems and high costs associated with customary two-part set-up box and interior padding. Plastic cases comprise a base section in the form of a tray-like structure with an open bed for a film stack, etc. Case has built-in structural features for rigidity, crush resistance, impact protection, and air, dust and light tight seal when used with a cover section. Such environmentally friendly designs are suitable as low cost, reusable one-size plastic containers for packaging standard size sheet products. For packaging special, less frequently called-for size films, papers, etc., interiors may be made infinitely adjustable with rows of parallel channels for placement of at least one chocking element.

Recyclable/reusable containers for packaging graphical sheet materials

A package structure 10 for storing and transporting photographic film magazines comprises a container 12 having a open end 24 and a base 14 supporting opposing end walls 16 and opposing side walls 20,24. Side walls 20,22 have a plurality of spaced apart recesses 32,34, respectively, forming chambers or receptacles 30, for frictionally receiving the end portion and the hub extending from the opposite end portion of the 135 photographic film magazines disposed therein. A lid member 26, made from a flexible opaque laminate material environmentally compatible with the container 12, is hermetically sealed to a flange member 42 formed in the top edge 28 of the end and side walls 16,20,22. The sealed package 10 protects the enclosed product from deleterious environmental effects, such as dirt, light and moisture, and is convenient to use.

A unitary, light-tight, self-locking, flip-top package, for securely containing light-sensitive material, which comprises (1) a closable and openable rectanguloid box having bottom, front, rear, and opposite end walls and (2) a mating lid having a top wall movably connected to the box rear wall, with front and opposite end walls depending therefrom in close confronting relation to the corresponding box walls. The box and lid walls are all formed from a single paperboard blank that is specially configured with various panels, flaps, and tabs adapted to be readily folded into close interlocking relationships, to provide a unitary, light-tight, flip-top package which can also be readily unfolded and stored in flat condition for reuse.

A unitary light-tight flip-top package, for securely containing light-sensitive material, comprises (1) a closable and openable rectanguloid box having bottom, front, rear, and opposite end walls and (2) a mating lid having a top wall movably connected to the box rear wall, with front and opposite end walls depending therefrom in close confronting relation to the corresponding box walls. The box and the lid walls are all formed from a single paperboard blank that is specially configured with various panels and flaps adapted to be folded into close cooperative relationships providing the unitary light-tight flip-top package desired.

A package light-tightly enclosing a photosensitive web roll for use in cooperating apparatus comprises an opaque leader joined to the web and wrapped circumferentially at least twice around the roll and a pair of thin, readily foldable, disk-shaped, opaque end caps covering the roll ends. Each end cap has an inner annular portion that is folded into and sealed inside one of the roll core ends and an outer annular portion that is folded over the corresponding roll end periphery and onto the adjacent lateral edge portion of the first leader convolution. A pair of opposite lateral edge portion recesses extend inwardly from the leader opposite lateral edges, by an amount slightly exceeding the folded-over end-cap outer-annular-portion width, at a circumferential site on the leader where the first leader convolution ends. A narrower medial portion of the leader between those recesses can thus pass freely between the folded-over outer annular portions and thereby permit the second leader convolution to be wrapped circumferentially around the folded-over outer annular portions. The folded-over outer annular portions of both end caps are thus light-tightly trapped between the opposite lateral edge portions of the first and second leader convolutions, thereby light-tightly enclosing the web roll without having to seal or adhere the leader to the end caps, and without significantly increasing the web roll length.

A package for securely containing a generally rectanguloid article comprises a rectanguloid box that is closable to protectively enclose the article and openable to allow ready access thereto. The box when closed has a bottom wall, spaced-panel opposite side walls, a rear end wall, a top wall, and a multi-panel front end wall. All of the box walls are formed from a single pre-cut and -scored blank of corrugated paperboard, which includes various panels, flaps, and tabs that are adapted to be folded about respective score lines and positioned in cooperative relation to one another to provide the closable and openable box desired for securely containing the article.

Package for securely containing a generally rectanguloid article

A readily adjustable mold is provided for transforming a heated plastic sheet into an adapter intended to restrain a received article from moving inside a container larger than the article. The adapter to be formed has a base configured to fit snugly within the container and a plurality of projections on the base that are spaced from each other to receive the article snugly therebetween. The mold comprises means including side and bottom walls that define a cavity with peripheral and medial regions, for operatively positioning the plastic sheet for formation of the adapter, and means disposed in the cavity peripheral region and moveable toward and away from the cavity medial region, for selectively locating the projections on the adapter base. The locating means in the peripheral region may include one or more projection-forming member(s) slideably mounted on each of at least two of the side walls for selective movement toward and away from the medial region. Any such member(s) may be independently moveable for such selective movement individually. The peripheral region may further include a removably insertable member adjacent to at least one of the side walls, to reduce at least one outside dimension of the adapted. Inwardly adjacent to that member, another such member may be disposed to further reduce said dimension(s), and may have one or more projection-forming member(s) extending therefrom toward the medial region to help center the received article in its container.

Mold for forming container adapter

An article-container adapter is provided to restrain an article from moving inside a container that has sidewalls which define an interior space larger than the article. The adapter has a base, configured to fit snugly inside the container, and a plurality of projections disposed on the base and spaced from each other to receive the article snugly therebetween. The base includes a floor panel having perimetric edge portions engageable with the container sidewalls; and the projections extend upwardly from the floor panel with article-confining surfaces perpendicular thereto. The base may also include outer wall sections extending upwardly from the floor panel perimetric edge portions to engage the container sidewalls; and the projections may then extend inwardly from the outer wall sections to position their article-confining surfaces for engagement by the inserted article. The base may further include a flange extending outwardly from an upper end portion of each outer wall section. Both the base and the projections may be integrally formed as a one-piece plastic insert for packaging various articles in standard-size containers.
