A microfluidic device comprising: (a) a plate comprising a substrate, a plurality of electrodes, and a first layer of hydrophobic material applied over the plurality of electrodes; (b) a processing unit operably programmed to perform a method of pinning an aqueous droplet within the microfluidic device; and (c) a controller operably connected to a power source, the processing unit, and the plurality of electrodes. The method of pinning an aqueous droplet comprises: applying an electric field of a first polarity to an aqueous droplet located on the surface of the layer of hydrophobic material and having a first contact angle, to cause the droplet to maintain a second contact angle in the absence of the electric field, wherein the aqueous droplet contains a surfactant and the second contact angle is less than the first contact angle.

Microfluidic devices containing reversibly pinned droplet samples and methods

An electrophoretic display comprising a fluid including a first species of particles and a charge control agent disposed between first and second electrodes. When a first addressing impulse have an electrical polarity is applied to the medium, the first species of particles move in one direction relative to the electric field, but when a second addressing impulse, larger than the first addressing impulse but having the same electrical polarity, is applied to the medium, the first species of particles move in the opposed direction relative to the electric field.

Colored electrophoretic displays using same polarity reversing address pulse

An electrowetting system for actuating droplets of a first composition and of a second composition. The system includes: a plurality of electrodes configured to manipulate droplets of fluid in a microfluidic space, each electrode being coupled to circuitry which applies driving voltages to the electrode; and a processing unit operably connected to a look up table correlating drive sequences to chemical species and at least one composition parameter. The processing unit is configured to: receive data of a first chemical species and a first composition parameter of the first composition; receive data of a second chemical species and a second composition parameter of the second composition; correlate a first drive sequence with the first chemical species and the first composition parameter; correlate a second drive sequence with the second chemical species and the second composition parameter; and output the first drive sequence and the second drive sequence to the electrodes.

Method for reagent-specific driving EWoD arrays in microfluidic systems

An electro-optic display comprising at least two separate layers of electro-optic material, with one of these layers being capable of displaying at least one optical state which cannot be displayed by the other layer. The display is driven by a single set of electrodes between which both layers are sandwiched, the two layers being controllable at least partially independently of one another. Another form of the invention uses three different types of particles within a single electrophoretic layer, with the three types of particles being arranged to shutter independently of one another.

Method for driving two layer variable transmission display

An electrophoretic medium comprises a fluid, a first, light scattering particle (typically white) and second, third and fourth particles having three subtractive primary colors (typically magenta, cyan and yellow); at least two of these colored particles being non-light scattering. The first and second particles bear polymer coatings such that the electric field required to separate an aggregate formed by the third and the fourth particles is greater than that required to separate an aggregate formed from any other two types of particles. Methods for driving the medium to produce white, black, magenta, cyan, yellow, red, green and blue colors are also described.

Colored electrophoretic displays

A method for degassing a microfluidic droplet by combining electrowetting and heating to induce formation of gaseous bubbles in the droplet. In an embodiment the methods are carried out on an active matrix of electrowetting electrodes including a hydrophobic coating. A carrier fluid is flowed against the droplet motion propelled by electrowetting to facilitate rapid removal of the gasses departing the droplet.

Method for degassing liquid droplets by electrical actuation at higher temperatures

A method for moving an aqueous droplet comprising providing an electrokinetic device including a first substrate having a matrix of electrodes, wherein each of the matrix electrodes is coupled to a thin film transistor, and wherein the matrix electrodes are overcoated with a functional coating comprising: a dielectric layer in contact with the matrix electrodes, a conformal layer in contact with the dielectric layer, and a hydrophobic layer in contact with the confornial layer; a second substrate comprising a top electrode; a spacer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate and defining an electrokinetic workspace; and a voltage source operatively coupled to the niatrix electrodes. The method further comprises disposing an aqueous droplet on a first matrix electrode; and providing a differential electrical potential between the first matrix electrode and a second matrix electrode with the voltage source, thereby moving the aqueous droplet.
