A system, according to one embodiment, includes: an enclosure, a bay coupled to the enclosure, the bay being for storing at least one solid state drive therein, and a computer coupled to the enclosure. The computer includes a central processing unit, and a wireless access point coupled to the enclosure, the wireless access point being coupled to the central processing unit. Moreover, the wireless access point is for wirelessly transferring data received from the central processing unit to at least one solid state drive stored in the bay. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are described in additional embodiments.

A computer includes a central processing unit, a first network adapter, a second network adapter, and an embedded switch. The embedded switch has a port coupled to the central processing unit, a port coupled to the first network adapter, and a port coupled to the second network adapter. The embedded switch provides a central processing unit with access to an external network using a selected one of the first and second network adapters, runs a baseboard management controller module that includes the functionality of a baseboard management controller, and provides the baseboard management controller module with access to an external network through the embedded switch to communicate with a remote management node.

An apparatus for voltage regulation device adjustment includes a rating module that determines an efficiency score for a current firmware of a voltage regulation device ('VRD'). The efficiency score describes a power efficiency for the VRD based on a configuration of an electronic device where the VRD is installed. The apparatus includes a comparison module that compares the determined efficiency score for the current firmware with a predetermined efficiency score for a different firmware for the VRD. The apparatus includes a firmware module that selects the different firmware for the VRD in response to determining that the VRD is less efficient with the current firmware than with the different firmware based on the comparison of the efficiency score for the current firmware with the predetermined efficiency score for the different firmware.

An apparatus for storing data based on physical accessibility of storage devices is disclosed. One embodiment of an apparatus includes a processor and a memory. The memory that stores code executable by the processor to acquire information related to physical accessibility for a plurality of data storage devices, each data storage device operably connected to a computing device. The code is further executable by the processor to classify the physical accessibility for each of the plurality of data storage devices based on the acquired information. Also, the code is executable by the processor to store data on a data storage device of the plurality of data storage devices based on the classified physical accessibility for the data storage device and sensitivity of the data. Further, data with a higher sensitivity is stored on a data storage device classified with a lower accessibility than data with a lower sensitivity.

An apparatus for voltage regulation device adjustment includes an external factor module that determines external factors, where the external factors include conditions external to an electronic device that affect operating performance and operating costs. The electronic device includes a voltage regulator device ('VRD') providing power to one or more components of the electronic device. The apparatus includes a firmware selection module that selects new firmware for the VRD of the electronic device in response to the determined external factors, and a firmware update module that replaces previously installed firmware on the VRD with the new firmware. The new firmware includes control settings for the VRD.

A computer includes a central processing unit, a management processor, a first network adapter, a second network adapter, and an embedded switch. The embedded switch includes a port coupled to the central processing unit, a port coupled to the management processor, a port coupled to the first network adapter, and a port coupled to the second network adapter. Furthermore, the embedded switch provides both the central processing unit and the management processor with access to an external network using a selected one of the first and second network adapters. Optionally, the computer may include additional network adapters.

A method, according to one embodiment, includes: establishing a wireless connection between a wireless receiver in a solid state drive and a mobile device, receiving configuration instructions from the mobile device via the wireless connection, sending the received configuration instructions to a processor in a second device via a physical electrical connection coupling the second device to the solid state drive, receiving data from the second device via the physical electrical connection coupling the second device to the solid state drive, and storing the data in a memory of the solid state drive according to the received configuration instructions. An apparatus for providing a BMC via an M.2 slot includes a presence module that determines whether a baseboard management controller ('BMC') is coupled to an M.2 expansion slot, the M.2 expansion slot configured to also receive a non-BMC device, a bus module that enables communication between a serial peripheral interface ('SPI') bus and the M.2 expansion slot in response to the BMC being present in the M.2 expansion slot, and a signal conversion module that receives management control signals from the BMC via an unused pin-out of the M.2 expansion slot, in response to the BMC being present in the M.2 expansion slot, and transfers the management control signals to the SPI bus.

A computer program product may include storage media embodying program instructions executable by a baseboard management controller (BMC) within a compute node to: receive a request to install a central processing unit (CPU) in the compute node; identify a current hardware configuration of the compute node; identify a plurality of available locations within the compute node that are compatible with installation of the CPU; calculate, for each of the identified plurality of available locations, a predicted performance score for the CPU on the basis that the CPU were to be installed in the available location, wherein the predicted performance scores are calculated in response to receiving the request; select a location from among the plurality of available locations that is associated with the greatest performance score for the CPU; and generate user output indicating the selected location where the CPU should be installed.

A computer program product and an apparatus are provided. The computer program product includes a computer readable medium and program instructions embodied therein, wherein the program instructions are executable by a processor to cause the processor to perform various operations. The operations include obtaining, for each phase in a voltage regulator having multiple phases, values of at least one operating parameter over a period of time. The operations further include determining, for each phase in the multi-phase voltage regulator, a wear score as a function of the obtained values of at least one operating parameter. Still further, the operations include selecting a default phase, from among the multiple phases, that has a wear score indicating that the phase has less cumulative wear than any of the other phases, and instructing the voltage regulator to turn on the selected phase as a default phase when only one phase is turned on.

Reconfigurable processors and methods for collecting computer program instruction execution statistics are disclosed. According to an aspect, a method includes providing a reconfigurable processor configured to execute a set of central processing unit (CPU) instructions that each have a function. The method also includes modifying the function of one or more of the CPU instructions that identifies an instruction address and a destination address pair of the CPU instruction(s) based on a defined test case. Further, the method includes using the reconfigurable processor to execute the set of CPU instructions. The method also includes identifying an instruction address and destination address pair of the CPU instruction(s) having the modified function when the CPU instruction(s) having the modified function is executed during execution of the set of CPU instructions.

Reconfigurable processors and methods for collecting computer program instruction execution statistics

A computer readable storage medium embodies program instructions executable by a processor to perform a method including identifying a product warranty for each of a plurality of flash memory devices within a system, wherein the product warranty includes a maximum number of writes and a maximum age, and tracking the number of writes and the age of each flash memory device. The method further includes determining, for each flash memory device, a number of pro rata writes remaining in the product warranty, which is determined as a number of writes remaining until the flash memory device reaches the maximum number of writes divided by an amount of time remaining until the flash memory reaches the maximum age. The method then causes data to be written to the flash memory device having the greatest number of pro rata writes remaining in the product warranty.

An apparatus and a computer program product includes non-transitory computer readable storage media embodying program instructions. The program instructions are executable by a baseboard management controller (BMC) to receive a request to install a hardware component in a compute node, identify a current hardware configuration of the compute node, and identify a plurality of available locations within the compute node for installation of the requested component. Still further, the BMC may identify, for each available location, a historical performance database record that includes a performance score for a component installed in the same location as the available location, has the same component type as the requested component, and was collected from a compute node having the same hardware configuration as the current compute node. The BMC may select an available location that has the greatest performance score for the component, and generate output indicating the selected location for installation.

A system, according to one embodiment, includes: a wireless communication device operable to establish a wireless connection and transmit server status information over the wireless connection. The system also includes an optical sensor which is operable to detect optical signals from an optical source of a server. Out-of-band management of data drives including receiving, from a user, a control command targeting a data drive communicatively coupled to a backplane, wherein the data drive is communicatively coupled to the computing device via an interconnect bus; generating, based on the control command, an out-of-band command targeting a baseboard management controller (BMC) communicatively coupled to the backplane, wherein the out-of-band command comprises a data drive location identifier; sending the out-of-band command to the BMC, wherein the BMC, in response, identifies the data drive on the backplane using the data drive location identifier and a cable topology table, and performs the out-of-band command on the data drive; and receiving, from the BMC, a first notification that the out-of-band command has been performed on the data drive identified by the data drive location identifier.
