This disclosure includes methods for testing hydraulically-actuated devices and related systems. Some hydraulically-actuated devices have a housing defining an interior volume and a piston disposed within the interior volume and dividing the interior volume into a first chamber and a second chamber, where the piston is movable relative to the housing between a maximum first position and a maximum second position in response to pressure differentials between the first and second chambers. Some methods include: (1) moving the piston to the first position by varying pressure within at least one of the first and second chambers such that pressure within the second chamber is higher than pressure within the first chamber; and (2) while the piston remains in the first position: (a) reducing pressure within the second chamber and/or increasing pressure within the first chamber; and (b) increasing pressure within the second chamber and/or decreasing pressure within the first chamber.

Methods for assessing the reliability of hydraulically-actuated devices and related systems

This disclosure includes subsea pumping apparatuses and related methods. Some apparatuses include one or more subsea pumps, each having an inlet and an outlet, and one or more motors, each configured to actuate at least one pump to communicate a hydraulic fluid from the inlet to the outlet, where the subsea pumping apparatus is configured to be in fluid communication with a hydraulically actuated device of a blowout preventer. Some subsea pumping apparatuses include one or more of: a desalination system configured to produce at least a portion of the hydraulic fluid; one or more valves, each configured to selectively route hydraulic fluid from an outlet of a pump to, for example, a subsea environment, a reservoir, and/or the inlet of the pump; and a reservoir configured to store at least a portion of the hydraulic fluid. Some apparatuses are configured to be directly coupled to the hydraulically actuated device.

Subsea pumping apparatuses and related methods

Some embodiments of the present BOP control systems include a system controller configured to actuate a first BOP function by communicating one or more commands to one or more nodes of a functional pathway selected from one or more available functional pathways associated with the first BOP function, each node comprising an actuatable component configured to actuate in response to a command received from the system controller, each node having one or more sensors configured to capture a first data set corresponding to actuation of the component and a processor configured to analyze the first data set to determine a useful life remaining of the component and/or compare the first data set to a second data set corresponding to a simulation of actuation of the component.

BOP control systems and related methods

A subsea processor may be located near the seabed of a drilling site and used to coordinate operations of underwater drilling components. The subsea processor may be enclosed in a single interchangeable unit that fits a receptor on an underwater drilling component, such as a blow-out preventer (BOP). The subsea processor may issue commands to control the BOP and receive measurements from sensors located throughout the BOP. The subsea processor may relay information to the surface for recording or monitoring. The subsea processor may also be programmed with a model from which to base operation of the BOP, such as in emergency conditions.

A method of matching sources to loads includes affecting load activity at a load with a pattern, receiving source activity data representing source activity at a plurality of sources, and matching the load to at least one source based on the source activity data. A system for matching sources to loads includes a load activity manipulator operably connected to a load and configured to affect load activity of the load with a pattern. The system for matching sources to loads further includes an activity monitor configured to receive source activity data representing source activity at the sources. The system for matching sources to loads also includes a matching engine operably connected to the activity monitor and configured to match the load to at least one source based on the source activity data.

Automatic matching of sources to loads

Systems and methods for detecting degradation and failures, include types of failures, in a hose assembly are disclosed. One system includes a hose degradation monitoring circuit having a hose assembly including a hose having first and second conductive layers, and a degradation monitoring circuit configured to detect a resistance of the hose across the conductive layers. The degradation monitoring circuit includes a voltage source electrically connected to the first conductive layer, and a resistor electrically connected between the second conductive layer and ground. The degradation monitoring circuit further includes a voltage monitoring circuit electrically connected between the resistor and the second conductive layer, to periodically monitor a voltage at the location and detect a possible failure of the hose assembly upon determining that, based at least in part on a change in the voltage at the location over time, a resistance of the hose assembly has passed a threshold level.

Methods and systems for measuring hose resistance

A pressure-sensing hose assembly and method of its use are disclosed. In an example aspect, the pressure sensing hose assembly includes a hose assembly including a hose having first and second conductive layers and a circuit electrically connected to the first and second conductive layers of the hose assembly. The circuit generates an electrical response across the first and second conductive layers of the hose assembly. The pressure-sensing hose assembly further includes a computing system configured to receive the electrical response and estimate a pressure within the hose assembly based on the electrical response.

A disturbance, for example, a frequency variation, is generated in at least a portion of the power distribution network. The disturbance may be generated, for example, by an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or some other component of the power distribution network, such as a switch. At least one node of the network experiencing the disturbance is identified and a topology of the power distribution network is determined responsive to identifying the at least one node. The at least one node may be identified by detecting a voltage-related artifact corresponding to the disturbance. A phase-locked loop (PLL)&#x2014;based circuit may be used for fast artifact detection. Groups of devices in the network may be identified from the artifacts, and combinatorial optimization techniques may be used to determine connectivity within such groups.

Methods and apparatus for determining power distribution system topology using disturbance detection

A subsea processor may be located near the seabed of a drilling site and used to coordinate operations of underwater drilling components. The subsea processor may be enclosed in a single interchangeable unit that fits a receptor on an underwater drilling component, such as a blow-out preventer (BOP). The subsea processor may issue commands to control the BOP and receive measurements from sensors located throughout the BOP. A shared communications bus may interconnect the subsea processor and underwater components and the subsea processor and a surface or onshore network. The shared communications bus may be operated according to a time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme.

Communications systems and methods for subsea processors

Some embodiments of the inventive subject matter provide a power distribution system for a data processing system. The power distribution system includes a plurality of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units, respective ones of which are configured to be coupled to respective loads via respective load busses, at least one reserve bus, a switching circuit configured to selectively couple and decouple the UPS units and the load busses to and from the at least one reserve bus and a control circuit configured to control the switching circuit responsive to a state of the data processing system. The control circuit may be configured to cause the switching circuit to couple the first UPS unit to the at least one reserve bus concurrent with the first UPS unit being coupled to a first load via a first load bus.

A method of matching sources to loads includes receiving load activity data and source activity data corresponding to samples of activity over a time period at a plurality of loads and a plurality of sources, respectively. The method of matching sources to loads further includes scoring similarity between the load activity and the source activity based on the load activity data and the source activity data, and matching loads to sources based on the scoring.

A hose fault detection system includes a hose assembly including a hose having first and second conductive layers. The hose assembly has an electrical characteristic. A fault detector is in electrical communication with the first and second conductive layers. The fault detector includes an indicator operatively connected to the hose assembly. A method for monitoring the structural integrity of a hose assembly includes providing a fault detection system having a hose assembly including a hose having a first conductive layer and a second conductive layer. The hose assembly has an electrical characteristic. The electrical characteristic of the hose assembly is compared to a threshold value. A visual indicator in operative communication with the hose assembly is illuminated when the electrical characteristic goes beyond the threshold value.
