A substrate in beaded form is provided which includes at least one non-tobacco botanical material, or a flavorant, a botanical extract, or both; a binder; an aerosol forming material; optionally, water and a tobacco material; and optionally a filler. The final form of the substrate can be configured for use in aerosol generating components for aerosol delivery devices. Further provided are aerosol generating components and aerosol delivery devices including the substrate in beaded form. Such devices utilize electrically generated heat or combustible ignition sources to heat the substrate, providing an inhalable substance in the form of an aerosol.

The present disclosure provides a substrate which includes microcrystalline cellulose, a binder, an aerosol forming material, and optionally an active ingredient, a flavorant, or both an active ingredient and a flavorant. The final form of the substrate can be configured for use in aerosol generating components for aerosol delivery devices. Further provided are aerosol generating components and aerosol delivery devices including the substrate. The present disclosure provides aerosol delivery devices. In an example implementation, an aerosol delivery device comprises an aerosol source member that defines an outer surface and an interior area and includes a substrate material having an aerosol precursor composition associated therewith, a control body having a housing that is configured to receive the aerosol source member, an electrical energy source coupled with the housing, and a heating assembly operatively connected to the electrical energy source. The heating assembly includes a plurality of spikes that may be configured to articulate between a retracted position, in which the plurality of spikes is not in contact with the aerosol source member, and a heating position, in which the plurality of spikes pierces through the outer surface of the substrate material and into a portion of the interior area thereof.

The present disclosure provides thermal energy absorbers for use in smoking articles. In an example embodiment, the smoking article may comprise an outer wrap circumscribing at least a portion of the smoking article, wherein the smoking article is defined by an upstream lighting end and a downstream mouth end, a carbon heat source positioned proximate the lighting end, a tobacco material positioned downstream of the carbon heat source and spatially separated from the mouth end of the smoking article, and a thermal energy absorber at least partially positioned between the tobacco material and the carbon heat source.

In an example implementation, a substrate portion of the present disclosure may comprise a series of overlapping layers of a composite substrate sheet, wherein the composite substrate sheet may comprise a non-woven web at least partially formed from regenerated cellulose fibers, a plurality of conductive threads integrated into the non-woven web, and a coating that includes a fibrous material and an aerosol precursor composition.

The present disclosure provides an aerosol delivery device comprising an aerosol source member. In an example embodiment, an aerosol source member of the present disclosure may comprise a substrate portion comprising a nanocellulose material impregnated with an aerosol precursor composition, a heat source configured to heat the aerosol precursor composition from the substrate portion forming an aerosol, and an aerosol pathway extending from the substrate portion to a mouth-end of the aerosol delivery device.

The present invention relates to a method of making a flavored menthol-containing solid object, which can be used as an input material for hot melt application to a smoking article component. The method generally includes the steps of combining and heating menthol and a flavorant to give a molten mixture; depositing the molten mixture onto a surface; allowing the deposited molten mixture to cool to give a solidified mixture; and removing the solidified mixture from the surface to afford a flavored menthol-containing solid object. The method can further involve melting the solid object and applying the melted material to a smoking article component to modify the flavor/aroma profile of a smoking article into which the coated component is incorporated.

Methods of modifying the tobacco-specific nitrosamine content of a tobacco material are described herein. One exemplary method comprises contacting a tobacco material with a composition comprising salt, sugar, enzyme, lactic acid bacteria, yeast, or a combination thereof to reduce the total bacterial content; curing the tobacco material; and fermenting the tobacco material in the presence of one or more microorganisms. The method can provide a fermented tobacco material having a tobacco-specific nitrosamine content that is reduced relative to a fermented tobacco material that has not been subjected to the disclosed method steps. In certain embodiments, the tobacco-specific nitrosamine content of the fermented tobacco material is no more than that of the cured tobacco material. Tobacco-containing products including such treated tobacco materials are also provided.

A smoking article having one or more reconstituted tobacco split inner wrap strips is described. One or more split inner wrap strips extend coaxially along the tobacco column between the inner surface of an outer wrap of cigarette paper and the tobacco column. The tobacco blend includes burley and a second tobacco, such as flue-cured, oriental, Maryland, or rare and exotic tobaccos, and combinations thereof. This blend improves burley smoke character without increasing Hoffman analyte levels, especially tobacco-specific nitrosamines (i.e., TNSAs). A cigarette with an improved burley smoke character without increasing Hoffman analyte levels is also described.
