Capsules and particles with at least one encapsulated and/or entrapped agent, such as therapeutic agent, imaging agents, and other constituents may be produced by electrohydrodynamic processes. More particularly, the agent encapsulated in a vehicle, capsule, particle, vector, or carrier may maximize treatment and/or imaging of malignant cancers while minimizing the adverse effects of treatment and/or imaging.

Systems for producing multilayered particles, fibers and sprays and methods for administering the same

Decontamination of nuclear facilities is necessary to reduce the radiation field during normal operations and decommissioning of complex equipment. In this invention, we discuss gel and foam based diphosphonic acid (HEDPA) chemical solutions that are unique in that these solutions can be applied at room temperature; provide protection to the base metal for continued applications of the equipment; and reduce the final waste form production to one step. The HEDPA gels and foams are formulated with benign chemicals, including various solvents, such as ionic liquids and reducing and complexing agents such as hydroxamic acids, and formaldehyde sulfoxylate. Gel and foam based HEDPA processes allow for decontamination of difficult to reach surfaces that are unmanageable with traditional aqueous process methods. Also, the gel and foam components are optimized to maximize the dissolution rate and assist in the chemical transformation of the gel and foam to a stable waste form.

Foam and gel methods for the decontamination of metallic surfaces

A method of decontaminating a radioactively contaminated oxide on a surface. The radioactively contaminated oxide is contacted with a diphosphonic acid solution for a time sufficient to dissolve the oxide and subsequently produce a precipitate containing most of the radioactive values. Thereafter, the diphosphonic solution is separated from the precipitate. HEDPA is the preferred diphosphonic acid and oxidizing and reducing agents are used to initiate precipitation. SFS is the preferred reducing agent.

Method for the decontamination of metallic surfaces

A toroid cavity detector includes an outer cylindrical housing through which extends a wire along the central axis of the cylindrical housing from a closed bottom portion to the closed top end of the cylindrical housing. In order to analyze a sample placed in the housing, the housing is placed in an externally applied static main homogeneous magnetic field (B,). An RF current pulse is supplied through the wire such that an alternately energized and de-energized magnetic field (B,) is produced in the toroid cavity which B,field is oriented perpendicular to the B,field. Following the RF current pulse, the response of the sample to the applied B,field is detected and analyzed. In order to minimize the detrimental effect of probe ringing, the cylindrically shaped housing is elongated sufficiently in length so that the top and bottom portions are located in weaker, fringe areas of the static main magnetic B,field. In addition, a material that tends to lessen the effect of probe ringing is positioned along the top and bottom ends of the toroid cavity. In another embodiment of the present invention, a plug is positioned adjacent the inside of the top and bottom ends of the toroid cavity so that the sample contained in the toroid cavity is maintained in the strongest and most homogeneous region of the static magnetic B,field.

Nuclear magnetic resonance detector used for reducing probe ringing

A process for selectively removing metal values which may include catalytic values from a mixture containing same, wherein a magnetic particle is contacted with a liquid solvent which selectively dissolves the metal values to absorb the liquid solvent onto the magnetic particle. Thereafter the solvent-containing magnetic particles are contacted with a mixture containing the heavy metal values to transfer metal values into the solvent carried by the magnetic particles, and then magnetically separating the magnetic particles. Ion exchange resins may be used for selective solvents.
