In glassware article forming machines such as the well known I.S. machine, sensors continuously detect the velocity of operation of each individual mechanism of the machine in order to derive a signal for each mechanism representative of the actual velocity of operation of the associated mechanism, and a control receives the signal and compares the detected actual velocity of the mechanism with a predetermined maximum optium velocity for the mechanism to provide a signal compensating for deviations from the determined maximum velocity for that mechanism, and a command signal to trigger the operation of a succeeding mechanism of a glass forming sequence, when the preceeding mechanism has reached to its point of cushioning, thereby optimizing in this way both the velocity of each individual mechanism, and, the total time of a glassware article forming cycle of the machine.

In a pressing machine for the manufacture of glass articles, which comprises, a base; a gyratory table composed of mold supporters equidistantly laid out around the table, thereby carrying the molds from one station to the next as the table gyrates intermittently, said table comprising a number of stations, among which are stations of charging, stations for pressing and cooling articles, extracting stations and stations for the cooling of the molds, wherein such stations includes a series of mechanisms; means to drive the rotating table coupled to said table to rotate the same; and a feeder in combination with said machine which provide a gob of glass to the station of charging by each cycle of the machine, a method and an apparatus is provided to controlling the cycle of operation of the machine and the operation of the diverse mechanisms including: a sensor to determine the instant in which a gob of glass is cut from said feeder and position sensors to detecting the real position of the diverse mechanisms of the machine, to derive signals representative of the movements of each mechanism. Control means for processing the signals provided by the sensors in order to start the machine cycle by each cut of gob and for determining the indexing of said table and the operation of each mechanism in accordance with the time determined by said control means. An electronic system for automatically controlling the weight and shape of glass gobs in a molten glass feeder. This electronic system continuously monitors the temperature, viscosity and level of the glass at the feeder bowl as well as the rotation and height of the tube with respect to the feeding orifice of the feeder, the reciprocating speed and stroke of the plunger inside the tube, the cutting speed of the glass gob shear blades, the shape of the gobs, and the weight of the finished articles through appropriate detectors which provide representative signals of the parameters that said detectors are respectively monitoring; a data processor that receives the data and processes same so as to compare the weight and form of the finished articles with their predetermined weight and shape and relate weight and shape deviations with the rest of the detected parameters to provide control signals to the tube mechanisms, plunger and shear blades which regulate the rotation speed and tube height, the reciprocation speed and plunger stroke and the shear speed of the blades in order to obtain the desired shape of the gobs and the desired, predetermined weight of the finished articles.

An improved system of speed control for glass article forming machines includes an operator's control panel which is provided with controls to feed to the system the geometry parameters of the glass article to be manufactured as well as the timing of the manufacturing cycle; a data processor capable of calculating the speed of each mechanism of the machine in response to the data received by said operator's control panel; an EPROM-erasable programmable read-only memory which is used to contain tables including sequence profiles for the opening of actuating valves and speed mechanism profiles; a table selector circuit which is coupled to said programmable memory and the said data processor to select sequence tables from said programmable memory and which is able to solve the speed equations by using the speed information that it receives from the said data processor, and which is also able to provide the starting times of the various mechanisms; a random access memory coupled to said table selector circuit and adapted to provide sequential signals from the signals obtained from the recited table selector circuit to form an operational table; a data microprocessor coupled to said random access memory in order to produce the time and speed signals starting from the operation table signals obtained from said random access memory; and a plurality of digital electromagnetic valves coupled to said microprocessor in order to receive from the same the individual respective operation commands and in order to controllably regulate the discharge of the outlet of a block of valves of the machine.

A valve block for glassware forming machines is rendered faster and more accurate by substituting, for the pilot air system, a plurality of solenoids directly coupled with the cartridge valves which handle the operational air, the major part of the bodies of said solenoids being arranged across the main operational air feed manifold to be cooled by the air passing therethrough, a closed chamber around the upwardly projecting ends of said solenoid valves, means for passing cooling air through said chamber, a plate for closing the lower ends of said valve chambers, and a plurality of manually actuatable push buttons in said lower plate to permit manual actuation of said cartridge valves. In order to facilitate removal of the cartridge valves for maintenance purposes, said valves are modified by removing the wider portion of their bodies and providing a section in the valve chamber of smaller diameter to engage the end plunger portion of the valve member.

An electronic glass gob distributor for machines which form glassware, thermoplastic or similar articles, comprising one or more glass gob distributing channels each supported on its rotatable shaft, a step motor for actuating each rotatable shaft to move the associated distributor channel toward respective forming stations, a pulse signal generator for each step motor, a pulse amplifier for each glass gob distributor channel to amplify and feed the pulse controlling signals to the respective step motor, and a microcomputer programmer for controlled sequence of the generated pulse signals eminating from a data processing unit connected to an operator's control panel, with suitable conductors from the data processing unit to gob feed sensors and to distribution channel position sensors, with additional conductors to solenoids operating a pneumatic valve adapted to actuate a fluid operated linear motor for moving rejecting channels into gob receiving position to prevent feeding of a gob into the glassware forming position when said gob is not desired for some specific reason, the operator's control panel including three stations, namely: visual information indicators, a digital switch section and a multiple switch section with emergency, start, read, reset, confirm, position and connect buttons, all of the elements of the control panel being connected to the microcomputer through an interface unit of multiple units.

An electronic timing control system for glassware and other thermoplastic articles forming machines of the kind having a plurality of unitary forming sections and a single molten glass gob feeding and distribution means, each forming section comprising glass gob guiding channels, a blank forming station, a blow molding station and/or a take out station, and finished ware take out means, comprises a preprogrammed controller capable of sequentially controlling all the ware forming operations, a constant frequency pulse generator to operate as a real time clock to measure the timing and duration of each operation sequentially controlled by said controller, a glass gob release sensor to detect the instant when a glass gob is cut and released from said glass gob feeding and distribution means and feed back a signal to said controller to indicate the end of a prior cycle and the initiation of a new cycle of operations, a temperature sensor to detect the passage of a glass gob from said guiding channels into said blank forming station and feed back a signal to said controller to trigger the operation of the parison forming means, and a pressure sensor to detect the instant when said parison forming means commence to work on a glass gob and feed back a signal in accordacne with the pressure to said controller to initiate the time count and to thereby secure an accurate duration of the parison forming operation, said controller also having mode of operation selector switches to enable selection of manual operation of the different main mechanisms of the machine without the need of inhibiting the remaining mechanisms, unloaded test operation of the machine to sequentially work the mechanisms without a load of glass, and fully automatic operation with a load of glass, and a variable frequency oscillator to simulate the signal of the gob release sensor, whereby when the unloaded test operation is selected, the simulated time signals are given by said oscillator and by the operator, whereas when automatic operation is selected, the real time signals are back fed to the controller by said sensors.
