A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system includes a blower assembly including a blower motor; and an electronically commutated motor (ECM) controller in electrical communication with the blower motor, the ECM controller including: a rectifier electrically connected to an alternating current (AC) input source, the rectifier being configured to receive AC electricity from the AC input source and convert the AC electricity to direct current (DC) electricity; a DC electrical circuit including a first DC electrical circuit loop and a second DC electrical circuit loop, the rectifier being configured to circulate the DC electricity through the DC electrical circuit; and a relay located within the first DC electrical circuit loop, the relay being configured to open to break the first DC electrical circuit loop and close to complete the first DC electrical circuit loop in order to reduce standby power consumption of the ECM controller.

A method of operating a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system including: transmitting, using an equipment control board, an operation request in a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal to an electronically commutate motor (ECM) controller of a blower motor, wherein the operation request includes a switching period command configured to vary a switching period of the PWM signal; operating the blower motor in accordance with the operation request by varying the switching period of the PWM signal; detecting a parameter of the blower motor for each of a plurality of switching periods as the switching period varies; and mapping the parameter of the blower motor for each of the plurality of switching periods.

Electrocaloric heat transfer system and method of operating the same

A heat transfer system is disclosed that includes an electrocaloric element including an electrocaloric material and electrodes arranged to impart an electric field to the electrocaloric material. A first thermal flow path is disposed between the electrocaloric material and a heat sink. A second thermal flow path is disposed between the electrocaloric material and a heat source. An electric power source is in operative electrical communication with the electrodes. The system also includes an arc suppression circuit in series with the electrocaloric element. The arc suppression circuit includes an interruptible electrical connection configured to interrupt the electrical connection in response to detection of an arc between the electrodes, and a series shunt connection in parallel with the interruptible electrical connection, with the series shunt connection including a series shunt load.

A trailer refrigeration unit is provided. Aspects include a plurality of power sources, wherein the plurality power sources are selectively coupled to a power converter and at least one compressor. The power converter is coupled to at least one fan and is selectively coupled to the at least one compressor. A microcontroller circuit is included and is configured to selectively operate the trailer refrigeration unit in one of a plurality of modes based on an environmental parameter within the trailer refrigeration unit. The plurality of modes includes a first mode where the at least one compressor and at least one fan are powered by the power converter and a second mode where the at least one compressor is powered by at least one of the plurality of power sources.
