The bearing housing of an electrical generator is isolated from the interior of the generator enclosure by forming a cavity in the generator end wall with a seal between the generator end wall and the rotor. By sealing the bearing housing from the interior of the enclosure, the bearing housing is subject entirely to ambient pressure while the interior of the generator is subject to high vacuum pressure for cooling purposes. This isolation minimizes or eliminates potential for oil leakage into the interior of the generator previously caused by exposure on one side of the bearing housing to high vacuum pressure within the generator enclosure and the opposite side to the ambient pressure. This isolation system also eliminates the need for a high suction pressure vapor extractor and enables a conventional vapor extractor associated with the lubrication oil system to remove oil vapors from the bearing housing.

A seal ring assembly for a generator includes an upper seal casing having a first radially inwardly directed channel for supporting at least one seal segment therein, the upper seal casing having a removable cap forming one side of the inwardly directed channel, and a lower seal casing having a second radially inwardly directed channel for supporting at least another seal segment. The first and second channels and the segments are adapted to be joined about a generator shaft to form a substantially 360.degree. seal, and the upper and lower seal segments in the upper and lower seal casings, respectively, are secured together at an interface therebetween.

Keybar slots in support plates of a large generator stator are made substantially oversize to accommodate the full probable distortion of the support plates occurring during fabrication of the stator frame. Keybars are affixed to pairs of auxiliary plates. The keybars are aligned within the oversize keybar slots, and then the auxiliary plates are affixed or welded to the stator support plates.

A stack of stator core laminations are compressed between a pair of resilient end flanges that are flexed into a dished configuration and secured in a pre-determined spaced-apart relationship by being welded to a plurality of longitudinal ribs disposed around the periphery of the stator laminations. Special tools and welding techniques are used during the manufacture of the core assembly to cause the dished flanges to continuously apply a pre-determined compressive force to the stacked laminations after the core assembly is completed.

The tieless bracing arrangement affords axial and radial movement of a compressible annulus while avoiding torsion loading of the annulus support structure. A new method is also disclosed for applying a tieless bracing to a dynamoelectric machine.
