Surgical cooling may be implemented by various systems, processes, and techniques. In certain implementations, a surgical cooling device includes a shaft, a cooling assembly, and a mechanical control system. The shaft includes a pair of axial cooling channels extending through its interior. The cooling assembly includes a pair of arms pivotally attached to the shaft and a foldable thermal exchanger coupled to the pair of arms and fluidly coupled to the pair of axial cooling channels. The mechanical control system is adapted to unfold the cooling assembly from a closed position to an open position to allow a coolant to flow through a first of the pair of axial cooling channels, through one or more thermal exchange channels, and out a second of the pair of cooling channels.

Surgical cooling device

A stent-graft for insertion into a body lumen, such as a blood vessel, is utilized in order to repair such lumen. The stent-graft includes a substantially cylindrical hollow expandable stent comprising a plurality of interconnected struts. The stent has a distal end and a proximal end, and an interior surface and an exterior surface. At least one strut of the stent has first and second apertures extending therethrough from the interior surface to the exterior surface. The stent-graft also includes a graft member covering a predetermined portion of least one of the interior surface and the exterior surface of the stent. In addition, the stent-graft further includes a staple for attaching the graft member to the stent. The staple has a crown and two legs extending therefrom. At least one of the legs of the staple extends through the graft material and through the first aperture. Both of the legs are bent inwardly towards said crown such that they evert back and extend through the second aperture.

Stent for use in a stent graft

Medical devices, and in particular implantable medical devices, may be coated to minimize or substantially eliminate a biological organism's reaction to the introduction of the medical device to the organism. The medical devices may be coated with any number of biocompatible materials. Therapeutic drugs, agents or compounds may be mixed with the biocompatible materials and affixed to at least a portion of the medical device. These therapeutic drugs, agents or compounds may also further reduce a biological organism's reaction to the introduction of the medical device to the organism. Various materials and coating methodologies may be utilized to maintain the drugs, agents or compounds on the medical device until delivered and positioned.

Medical devices, drug coatings and methods for maintaining the drug coatings thereon

A stent or other intraluminal medical device having markers formed from housings integral with the stent and marker inserts having a higher radiopacity than the stent provides for more precise placement and post-procedural visualization in a vessel, by increasing the radiopacity of the stent under X-ray fluoroscopy. The housings are formed integral to the stent and the marker inserts are made from a material close in the galvanic series to the stent material and sized to substantially minimize the effect of galvanic corrosion.

Radiopacity intraluminal medical device

A delivery apparatus for a self-expanding stent is disclosed. The apparatus has an outer sheath forming an elongated tubular member having distal and proximal ends and an inside and outside diameter. The apparatus also includes an inner shaft located coaxially within the outer sheath. The inner shaft has a distal end, a proximal end and longitudinal axis extending therebetween. At least a portion of the inner shaft is made from a flexible coiled member. The shaft preferably includes a stop attached thereto, the stop being proximal to the distal end of the sheath. Lastly, the apparatus includes a self-expanding stent located within the outer sheath, wherein the stent makes frictional contact with the outer sheath and the shaft is disposed coaxially within a lumen of the stent. During deployment of the stent, the stent makes contact with the stop.

Delivery apparatus for a self-expanding stent

A delivery apparatus for self-expanding stents may be utilized to safely deliver stents to a target site. The apparatus has an outer sheath forming an elongated tubular member having distal and proximal ends and an inside and outside diameter. The apparatus also includes an inner shaft located coaxially within the outer sheath. The inner shaft has a distal end, a proximal end and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween. At least a portion of the inner shaft is made from a flexible coiled member. The shaft preferably includes a stop attached thereto, the stop being proximal to the distal end of the sheath. Lastly, the apparatus includes a self-expanding stent located within the outer sheath, wherein the stent makes frictional contact with the outer sheath and the shaft is disposed coaxially within a lumen of the stent. During deployment of the stent, the stent makes contact with the stop.

In accordance with the present invention there is provided a delivery apparatus for a self-expanding stent. The apparatus has an outer sheath which is an elongated tubular member with distal and proximal ends and inside and outside diameters. The outer sheath has an enlarged section adjacent its distal end. The enlarged section has a greater inside and outside diameter than the inside and outside diameter of the sheath proximal to the enlarged section. The apparatus also includes an inner shaft located coaxially within the outer sheath. The shaft has a distal end and a proximal end. The shaft further includes a stop attached thereto which is proximal to the distal end of the sheath. Lastly, the apparatus includes a self-expanding stent located within the enlarged section of the outer sheath and makes frictional contact with the outer sheath. The shaft is disposed coaxially within a lumen of the stent, whereby the stent makes contact with the stop during deployment.

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a stent-graft for insertion into target site within a vessel of a patient. The graft has a crimped state for delivery to the target site, and an expanded state for implantation therein. The graft has a self-expanding outer stent, which is a tubular member made from an elastic material. The graft further includes a tubular flexible porous graft member extending along the interior of the outer stent. The graft member has front and back ends which are folded over and bonded to the front and back ends of the outer stent to form cuffs. In addition, the stent-graft has a self-expanding inner stent which also is a tubular member made from an elastic material. The inner stent is disposed within the interior of the graft member such that the inner stent, the graft member and the outer stent are all abutting.

Self-expanding stent-graft

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method of making a stent-graft for insertion into target site within a vessel of a patient. The graft has a crimped state for delivery to the target site, and an expanded state for implantation therein. The method uses a self-expanding tubular elastic outer stent having a crimped and expanded state, and includes the step of expanding the outer stent to its expanded state. The method also uses a tubular flexible porous graft member and includes the step of inserting the graft member along an interior of the outer stent. The method also uses a self-expanding tubular elastic inner stent, and includes the step of crimping the outer stent to a diameter smaller than a diameter of the expanded outer stent. The method then continues by inserting the inner stent within an interior of the graft member, and expanding the inner stent such that the inner stent, the graft member and the outer stent are all abutting.

Method for making a self-expanding stent-graft

A balloon dilatation catheter is provided which has a stiff proximal cannula made of a material such as metal hypotubing. The distal end of the catheter includes an inflatable medical device balloon, an inflation lumen and a guidewire lumen. A coiled transition assembly is positioned between the proximal cannula and the distal end section. This coiled transition assembly has a tightly wound coil within a tube and provides for a flexible transition between the two components of diverse stiffness, namely the proximal cannula and the flexible distal end portion. The dilatation catheter typically has an easily or rapidly exchangeable feature and is used in conjunction with a guiding catheter. During a procedure when the catheters are within the vascular system, the coiled transition section of the dilatation catheter readily follows tightly curved portions of the inserted guiding catheterby.

Coiled transition balloon catheter, assembly and procedure

A catheter having an elongated tubular body with a distal end, a proximal end and at least one lumen extending therebetween. The body is made from three layers of extruded plastic which adhere to each other. The body has an inner and outer layer made from a polymer, and a middle layer also made from a polymer. The middle layer is more flexible and has a lower melt temperature than the inner and outer layers. The catheter further includes an integral fuseless distal tip. The distal tip is made from the middle layer and no more than one of the inner and outer layers. The distal tip is softer than portions of the body proximal thereto. In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a fuseless soft tip tubular catheter, of the type described above. The method involves extruding the catheter so as to form the tubular body having the inner, outer and middle layers. Thereafter, at least the distal end of the catheter is heated so as to form a distal tip. The distal tip is made from the middle layer and no more than one of the inner and outer layers. The distal tip is softer than portions of said body proximal thereto.

Method of making a fuseless soft tip catheter

An elastomeric valve partition is conventionally mounted on a catheter comprising a tubular catheter body. The valve partition defines a central aperture extending inwardly from one of the faces, only partway through the valve partition. The partition also carries a plurality of radial slits extending from the other of the faces only partway through the valve partition and intersecting the central aperture. The central aperture is of a diameter to closely fit a guidewire extending through the valve partition, while the radial slits have a length that is at least double the radius of the central aperture. The slits preferably rotate circumferentially about 5 to 60 degrees as they extend through the valve partition from one face toward the other. A lubricity enhancing additive is present, selected from the group consisting of bismuth oxychloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, titanium dioxide, graphite, polyethylene wax, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and combinations thereof.

One piece self-aligning, self-lubricating catheter valve

A catheter which carries a hemostasis valve, such as a catheter sheath introducer, carries a slit elastic valve partition as part of the hemostasis valve. The inner housing has a bore and the end cap has an aperture that each communicate with an opposed surface of the valve partition. The diameter of the aperture and the bore are each of a distance that exceeds the outer diameter of preferably a french six catheter extending through the catheter of this invention, plus two times the thickness of the partition. When these conditions are satisfied, larger diameter inner catheters can be slidably inserted and removed through the catheter and valve of this invention with reduced frictional characteristics. Also, a compression ring is provided between the valve partition and the end cap which causes the valve partition to bow outwardly against the end cap and toward the aperture thereof. This, in turn improves the sealing characteristics. Also, an improved slit design for the partition is disclosed.

Catheter hemostasis valve

A catheter sheath introducer comprising a tubular sheath having a proximal end and a distal end are provided. A hub is coupled to the proximal end of the tubular sheath and a coil spring is also provided. The coil spring is positioned about the proximal end of the tubular sheath, and the sheath and coil spring are coupled to the hub in such a way that the tubular sheath and coil spring extend within the hub and out from the hub whereby the strain produced when the tubular sheath and hub are moved relative to one another is relieved.
