One embodiment is directed to a baseband controller for use with a plurality of radio points to provide wireless service to user equipment (UE) using a wireless interface. The baseband controller makes use of a hybrid virtualized architecture comprising special-purpose hardware configured to implement at least some of the LAYER-1 functions for the wireless interface and a virtual platform configured to implement some of the functions for the wireless interface. Such a baseband controller can be used in dual connectivity radio access networks.

Baseband controller for centralized radio access network (C-RAN) implemented using hybrid virtualization architecture

Certain features relate to systems and methods for optimizing the radio frequency characteristics of signals transmitted between a radio base station (RBS) and a distributed antenna system (DAS). A self-optimizing network (SON) entity can determine adjustments to radio frequency operations and management parameters at the RBS based on radio frequency parameters measured by a measurement and configuration module at the DAS. Adjustments to radio frequency operations and management parameters can include adjustments configured to compensate for signal latency caused by the DAS. Adjustments to radio frequency operations and management parameters can also include adjustments to signal gain due to noise rise caused by the DAS. The SON entity can also measure nominal receive power levels for the RBS for purposes of open loop power control.

Self-optimizing network entity for a telecommunications system

A traffic load can be determined in a telecommunications system using narrowband signal monitoring. Narrowband signals can be generated from a wideband uplink signal. A resource utilization profile can be estimated for a remote unit based on measured power profiles associated with the narrowband signals. Traffic load can be determined based on the resource utilization profile.

A digital repeater system for repeating RF signals comprises: a receiving section for receiving an RF input signal, the RF input signal comprising at least one frequency band including a multiplicity of subbands associated with a multiplicity of communication channels; and at least one transmitting section for transmitting the RF output signal. The receiving section is constituted to digitize the RF input signal to obtain a digital input signal and to isolate, within the digital input signal, the multiplicity of subbands from each other to obtain a multiplicity of digital subband signals. The at least one transmitting section is constituted to combine the digital subband signals to obtain a digital output signal and to convert the digital output signal to an RF output signal. In addition, the receiving section comprises a power profile estimation unit for determining a power estimate for each digital subband signal associated with the multiplicity of subbands and a muting device for muting a digital subband signal of a particular subband based on the power estimate. In this way a digital repeater system for repeating RF signals is provided which allows for a detection of unused portions of a frequency band in order to improve the performance of the overall system.

A distributed antenna system (DAS) includes a master unit; a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled with the master unit and distributed to provide coverage within a service area, each of the remote units remotely located from the master unit and other remote units; a coupler element coupled to receive a plurality of MIMO signals, the MIMO signals including first and second MIMO signals, the coupler element configured to: introduce a phase shift in a first portion of the first MIMO signal to generate a first phase shifted portion of the first MIMO signal; combine the first phase shifted portion with a second portion of the second MIMO signal to generate a combined MIMO signal; and present the combined MIMO signal at a first output port of the coupler element; at least one antenna coupled with each remote unit and configured to receive the combined MIMO signal for transmission.

A method and apparatus for determining placement of a plurality of simulated antennas of a simulated distributed antenna system (DAS) for handling simulated MIMO signals in a simulated environment includes: at a first simulated location, simulating communication of a first simulated MIMO signal by a first remote unit over a first simulated air interface; at a second simulated location, simulating communication of a second simulated MIMO signal by a second remote unit over a second simulated air interface; the first simulated location and the second simulated location arranged within the simulated environment to provide overlapping simulated signal coverage of both the first simulated MIMO signal and the second simulated MIMO signal at a third simulated location; and analyzing at least a first simulated received power of the first simulated MIMO signal and a second simulated received power of the second simulated MIMO signal at the third simulated location.

Distributed antenna system for MIMO communications

Systems are provided for managing a small cell telecommunication system servicing multiple network operators. In one aspect, a small cell telecommunication system can include management sub-system including a controller, multiple baseband processing units in communication with the controller, a transport module, and multiple remote antenna units. The controller can communicate with multiple core networks. Each core network is operated by a separate network operator for providing telecommunication services to terminal devices. Each of the baseband processing units can process data plane data and control plane data from at least one respective core network. The transport module can communicate signals between the baseband processing units and the remote antenna units of the small cell network. The management sub-system can provide a respective amount of capacity via the small cell network for each core network based on a respective subset of the baseband processing units assigned to the core network.

Certain features relate to a self-optimizing network entity configured for use with a distributed antenna system having a head end-unit configured to communicate wireless communication information to a plurality of remote units for transmission at a plurality of sites, the self-optimized network entity comprising circuitry configured to determine a network resource allocation plan for the plurality of remote units within the distributed antenna system based on an isolation level determined by at least one of the plurality of remote units based on a power level of a test signal received from at least one of the plurality of remote units.

Optimizing network resources in a telecommunications system

One embodiment is directed to a system that implements a downlink transmission mode that precodes sequences of symbols using a precoder matrix selected from a codebook. Linear transformations are performed on the sequences of precoded symbols using a distribution matrix. The distribution matrix is configured so that each of a plurality of precoder matrices provides perfect steering of transmit power to a corresponding one of a plurality of disjoint subsets of the antenna ports used for the downlink transmission mode. Also, the distribution matrix can be configured so that at least one precoder matrix provides peak power at all of the antenna ports used for the downlink transmission mode.

Distributed MIMO and/or transmit diversity in a cloud-ran system

Certain features relate to systems and methods for jointly optimizing a radio access network (RAN) and distributed antenna system (DAS). A joint RAN-DAS self-optimizing network (SON) entity can determine target parameters based on parameters specific to the DAS and parameters specific to the RAN. The joint RAN-DAS-SON entity can optimize the RAN and DAS using the target parameters. Jointly optimizing the RAN and the DAS can improve the capacity characteristics, coverage characteristics, or the performance characteristics of the RAN and DAS. In some aspects, the joint RAN-DAS-SON entity can optimize the RAN and DAS by re-allocating power levels of downlink signals transmitted by remote units of the DAS to compensate for underutilized carrier signals in situations of low traffic load.

Joint optimization of a radio access network and a distributed antenna system

Certain features relate to a centralized radio access network (C-RAN) that can flexibly and dynamically allocate protocol layer processing among baseband processing units and remote units. A C-RAN can be configured to include a media access control ('MAC') scheduler and a fronthaul physical layer coordinator. The fronthaul physical layer coordinator can include a fronthaul physical layer scheduler, which can allocate spatial resources by determining the specific remote unit(s) that should serve a given mobile device. The MAC scheduler can allocate time/frequency resources to user devices communicating with the remote units. The fronthaul physical layer coordinator or the MAC scheduler can also determine the optimal transmission modes remote units can use to serve the user devices.

Distributed processing in a centralized radio access network

Certain features relate to optimizing network resources in a distributed antenna system to minimize signal interference between remote units in the distributed antenna system. A remote unit is configured to measure an isolation level with another remote unit. Based on the measured isolation level, a self-optimizing network entity can instruct base transceiver stations to partition network resources such that remote units with isolation levels lower than an isolation threshold value radiate signals using different network resources. Remote units that have isolation levels higher than an isolation threshold value can radiate signals using the same network resources. By repeating the process across multiple remote units across multiple cell-sites, signal interference between adjacent remote units in the distributed antenna system can be minimized.

Certain features relate to systems and methods for planning and optimizing a distributed antenna system ('DAS') based on measurements taken from the radio environment surrounding the DAS. An operation and management system can determine a mapping of external cells based on measurements of downlink signals taken by a measurement subsystem. The operation and management system can determine a mapping of internal cells as well as a neighboring cell relation table. The DAS element management system or network operator can configure the DAS based on the mapping of external cells, mapping of internal cells, and the cell relation table. Additionally, based on neighboring cell signal power measurements taken by user devices, the a common interface between the DAS and the radio access network can determine a radio environment map estimating positions of the user devices connected to the DAS.
