An inerted plate dryer for drying solvent based coating is disclosed. The dryer uses two tiers of substantially parallel heating plates that are located not more than 10 cm apart. A moving web with solvent based coating is passed through the dryer, and runs closer to one of the heating plates. The method of using such inerted plate dryer is also disclosed.

Inerted plate dryer and method of drying solvent based coating

A method of designing and the resulting thermally stable heated coating die apparatus, the die apparatus including a die having a die geometry and a heating system with heaters and temperature sensors. The method and resultant apparatus provides minimized temperature gradients, flat die lip faces in a die to roll plane and a flat die in a plane perpendicular to die flat lip faces and parallel to substrate width. The method optimizes simultaneously: die geometry, placement of the heaters, placement of temperature sensors, and shielding from operating conditions, using heat transfer and structural numerical modeling and statistical analysis while considering die functionality characteristics, minimum increment of temperature measurement and control accuracy related to minimum acceptable deviation from flatness, coating die material of construction relative to thermo-structural material properties, and desirable coating die material properties.

Thermo-stable coating die design method and apparatus

Disclosed herein is a multilayer silicone release surface comprising a backing, a support layer on the backing, and a silicone layer of the support layer. The various layers of the multilayer release surface are deposited substantially simultaneously, as for example by a dual die or using curtain coating techniques.

Method for forming multilayer release liners

Multilayer PSA label constructions that achieve a good balance of properties, namely, adhesive performance, convertibility, and laser printer performance, and, optionally, good wet-out on plastic substrates and low haze. The multilayer PSA construction comprising a facestock, a multilayer adhesive coating, and a release liner. The adhesive coating is made of a face side adhesive (FSA) layer comprising a first emulsion acrylic PSA, which is in contact with the inner surface of the facestock, and a liner side adhesive (LSA) layer, comprising a second emulsion acrylic PSA different from the first acrylic PSA, which is in contact with the FSA. The adhesive coating has a coat weight of less than about 26 g/m and a flow of less than about 50 &mgr;m at room temperature. The construction exhibits a loop tack value of at least about 3.5 N/25 mm at 5&deg; C. on a polyethylene substrate. It has been discovered that multilayer PSA label constructions exhibiting these properties also exhibit good convertibility and laser printer performance.

Multilayer pressure-sensitive adhesive label constructions

The present invention is directed toward multilayer pressure-sensitive adhesive constructions with improved convertibility and aging. In one embodiment, the multilayer constructions have one layer formed of a first adhesive composition having a first glass transition temperature, and also having a tangent delta greater than about 0.5 at 10 radians per second at 20&deg; C., and a storage modulus greater than about 3&times;10 dynes/cm at 10 radians per second at 20&deg; C. At least a second adhesive layer is provided in the construction, the second adhesive layer comprising a second adhesive composition with a second glass transition temperature.

Multilayer pressure-sensitive adhesive construction

A pressure-sensitive adhesive construction repulpable in paper recycling operations, comprising a facestock which is repulpable; a dispersible pressure-sensitive adhesive comprising tacky emulsion polymers dispersible in water; and a nondispersible pressure-sensitive adhesive comprising tacky emulsion polymers not dispersible in water, wherein, on the facestock, the dispersible pressure-sensitive adhesive is closer to the facestock than the nondispersible pressure-sensitive adhesive, thereby improving both adhesive performance and recyclability.

Method for producing repulpable pressure-sensitive adhesive

A multilayer adhesive construction and method for production of said construction are provided. The construction comprises a facestock, a barrier layer on the facestock, and an adhesive layer on the barrier layer. The barrier layer comprises a pressure-sensitive adhesive which inhibits the migration of mobile species such as oils, resins, tackifiers, or plasticizers from the adhesive layer into the facestock or from the facestock into the adhesive layer. This migration of mobile ingredients often manifests itself as swelling or hardening of the facestock which, in turn, leads to wrinkling of the adhesive construction and general loss of adhesion. The multilayer adhesive construction of the invention thus improves adhesion and the appearance of the label by inhibiting wrinkling and/or staining.

Use of pressure-sensitive adhesive as a barrier coating

A method for simultaneously coating multiple thin layers of relatively viscous fluids comprises the relative adjustment of the viscosity of the fluids in order to achieve a viscosity ratio in the optimum range without adversely affecting the adhesive properties of the fluids. In the preferrred method, viscosity is adjusted by varying the temperature of one or both fluids prior to coating and/or by reformulating the liquids to vary their relative viscosities.

Method of multilayer die coating using viscosity adjustment techniques

Disclosed herein is a primerless removable pressure sensitive adhesive construction comprising an unprimed facestock, a first adhesive layer in contact with the facestock, a second removable pressure sensitive adhesive layer in contact with the first adhesive layer, and a release surface in contact with the second adhesive layer. Advantageously, constructions of this design exhibit improved layflatness in comparison to conventional emulsion primed removable pressure sensitive adhesive constructions.

Primerless pressure-sensitive adhesive constructions

An improved applicator die for alternately depositing different liquid coating materials on a moving web comprises a die body having switch bars for opening and closing respective flow passageways for supplying the different liquid coating materials to an elongated coating orifice from respective manifolds. The switch bars, flow passageways and manifolds are substantially as wide as and substantially parallel to the coating orifice of the die whereby changeover between different coating materials can be made very rapidly.

The present invention is directed toward a multilayer, pressure-sensitive adhesive construction wherein one layer is formed of a first adhesive composition having a first glass transition temperature, and at least a second layer is formed of a second adhesive composition having a second glass transition temperature. The first glass transition temperature differs from the second glass transition temperature by from about 10.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C.

Multilayer Pressure-sensitive adhesive construction

A method for simultaneously coating multiple thin layers of relatively viscous fluids comprises the adjustment of the pressure gradients in the interface region between two confluent flows. In particular, the pressure gradient along the middle lip is regulated so as to not be excessively positive, in order to position the separating line of the top flow at a particular point on the die lips, thus enhancing stable flow. In one aspect of the method, a step configuration is designed into the die lips so that the downstream lip steps away from the web in the direction of web travel. In another aspect of the method, the pressure gradient at various locations in the bead is controlled by beveling the upstream and downstream lips. In yet a further aspect of the present method, the viscosities of the two liquids being coated are matched at the relevant shear rates to promote good coating quality.
