An apparatus for diagnosing and controlling an ignition system of an Internal combustion engine includes an ignition coil controllable by an ignition control circuit, a spark voltage sensor electrically connected to the high tension side of the ignition coil secondary and an ion voltage sensor electrically connected to the low tension side of the ignition coil secondary. A computed processes the ion voltage signal to determine a combustion quality value and a roughness value. If the combustion quality value is outside a predefined range or if the roughness value exceeds a roughness threshold, the computer is operable to adjust the engine fueling, spark timing and/or spark energy.

Apparatus and method for diagnosing and controlling an ignition system of an internal combustion engine

A system for controlling ignition energy of an internal combustion engine includes an ignition coil having a primary coil and a secondary coil coupled to first and second electrodes of an ignition plug defining a spark gap therebetween, wherein the primary coil is operable to induce a spark voltage across the secondary coil and across the spark gap. The secondary coil is responsive to the spark voltage to produce a discharge current across the spark gap of the ignition plug. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, means are provided for controllably shunting the primary coil to thereby control the duration of discharge current across the spark gap of the ignition plug. In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, means are further provided for drawing discharge current away from the ignition plug to thereby limit the magnitude of the discharge current within some time period after the transfer of energy from the primary coil to the secondary coil begins. The principles of the present invention are accordingly applicable to control the duration and/or magnitude of ignition plug discharge current to thereby minimize electrode erosion while maximizing ignitability in either a conventional ignition plug-based ignition system or an arc propelling ignition plug-based ignition system.

System for controlling ignition energy of an internal combustion engine

An apparatus for diagnosing and controlling an ignition system of an internal combustion engine includes an ignition coil controllable by an ignition control circuit, a spark voltage sensor electrically connected to the high tension side of the ignition coil secondary and an ion voltage sensor electrically connected to the low tension side of the ignition coil secondary. A computer processes the spark voltage signal by comparing the signal to a number of predefined spark voltage waveforms in memory. If the spark voltage signal matches any of the spark voltage waveforms in memory that correspond to a predefined ignition system failure mode, a corresponding error code is stored in memory. The computer is further operable to process a voltage peak of the spark voltage, wherein the voltage peak corresponds to the breakdown voltage in the spark gap of a spark plug connected to the secondary coil. If the voltage peak exceeds a peak threshold, or if a slope of the spark voltage waveform about the voltage peak is less than a slope threshold, the computer is operable to store a corresponding error code in memory. The computer is also operable to process the ion voltage signal to determine a combustion quality value and a roughness value therefrom. If the combustion quality factor is outside a predefined range or if the roughness value exceeds a roughness threshold, the computer is operable to adjust engine fueling, spark timing and/or spark energy.

Apparatus and method for diagnosing and controlling an ignition system

A controlled energy ignition system for an internal combustion engine includes an ignition coil having a primary coil and a secondary coil coupled to first and second electrodes of an ignition plug defining a spark gap therebetween, wherein the primary coil is responsive to activation of a control signal to produce a spark voltage across the secondary coil and across the spark gap. The secondary coil is responsive to the spark voltage to produce a discharge current across the spark gap of the ignition plug. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, means are provided to draw discharge current away from the ignition plug to thereby limit the discharge current to below a threshold current value within some predefined time period after activation of the control signal. In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, means are provided for establishing a supplemental voltage across at least a portion of either the primary or secondary coil to thereby produce a supplemental discharge current across the spark gap. The ignition system of the present invention is accordingly operable to control the discharge current throughout an ignition event to thereby minimize electrode erosion while optimizing ignition of the air-fuel mixture.

A variable length arc magnetic spark plug includes a shell, a pair of electrodes that define a variable length air gap or diverging air gap therebetween, and at least one magnet that produces a magnetic field in the air gap separating the electrodes. The magnitude of an ignition signal supplied to the electrodes directly affects the force acting on the arc to move or position the arc relative to the magnetic field produced by the magnets in accordance with well known field principles. In the preferred embodiment, a pair of magnets produces a magnetic field in the diverging air gap. Less current is required to produce a larger or longer arc with the inclusion of the magnets in the vicinity of the air gap wherein the electrical arc is generated.

An apparatus and method for generating a highly conductive channel for the flow of plasma current between the electrodes of an ignitor gap device are disclosed. A high voltage transformer having a high turns ratio is used to produce a high voltage spark across an ignitor gap. Subsequently, a high voltage low turns ratio transformer is used to supply a pre-plasma current signal to the ignitor gap at a predetermined time following the high voltage spark thereby ensuring that the ionized channel is developed to a more conductive state prior to introduction of the pre-plasma signal into the ignitor gap. Once the sustaining voltage for sustaining plasma flow through the channel has stabilized to a sufficiently low voltage, a high current main plasma signal is supplied to the ignitor gap thereby expanding plasma flow in the area surrounding the ignitor gap and providing a high quality ignition source for use in internal combustion engines.

A plasma jet ignitor apparatus for generating plasma from a plasma medium and for discharging the plasma as a jet into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus has a plug which has electrodes from which an arc is generated. The arc causes the plasma medium which is supplied to the plasma generation cavity to become plasma. The plasma generation cavity is cooperatively arranged with magnetic field generation means, electrode discharging means and plasma medium supply means. The cavity has an inlet opening adjacent the plasma generation location at the bottom of the cavity and an outlet orifice at the top of the cavity. The plasma is ejected as a plasma jet, with a ring vortex structure, from the cavity and through the orifice. The magnetic field generation means is disposed as a magnetic field coil acting on the arc. The magnetic field is created by the discharge of a capacitor at the time of the formation of the plasma in the cavity. The magnetic field accelerates the plasma out of the cavity through the orifice so that the plasma exits as a high velocity jet and achieves effective penetration with low energy expenditure. Timing means are also included for delivering gaseous or liquid plasma medium into the cavity, the discharge of the plasma generating energy and the triggering of the magnetic field.
