A process and apparatus for sweetening a hydrocarbon stream. The apparatus includes two vessels. In a first extraction vessel, caustic removes mercaptans from the hydrocarbon stream. In a second oxidation vessel, the mercaptans in the rich caustic are converted in disulfides. The lean caustic and disulfides are passed back to the first extraction vessel in which the disulfides are separated into the sweetened hydrocarbon phase. The second vessel may receive a wash oil, such as the sweetened hydrocarbon phase, to remove disulfides from a vented gas stream.

Processes for sweetening a hydrocarbon stream

A separation zone and a method of separating a mixed stream are described. The separation zone includes a tank and a stack having a gas outlet. A first baffle is positioned between the sides and defines a disulfide liquid compartment. The stack is positioned above the disulfide liquid compartment. A second baffle is positioned between the first baffle and the second side and defines an alkali compartment. The second baffle has a height less than the height of the first baffle. A third baffle is positioned between the first and second baffles. The bottom of the third baffle is at a height less than the height of the second baffle, and the top of the third baffle is at a height greater than the height of the first baffle.

Sulfide oxidation process and apparatus

A process and apparatus for oxidizing thiol compounds from an alkaline stream. The process includes passing a thiol rich alkaline stream and an oxygen containing gas to a low pressure oxidizing zone to oxidize at least a portion of the thiol compounds to disulfide compounds. A liquid stream comprising the alkali containing the disulfide compounds is passed through a pump to increase the pressure and form a pressurized alkaline stream. The pressurized alkaline stream and a sulfur lean liquid light hydrocarbon stream are introduced to a high pressure disulfide separation vessel to form a sulfur lean alkaline stream and a sulfur rich liquid light hydrocarbon stream.

Process for oxidizing one or more thiol compounds

Embodiments of apparatuses and methods for conversion of mercaptans are provided. In one example, an apparatus comprises a vessel that is capable to receive a feed stream that comprises liquid hydrocarbons and the mercaptans. The vessel comprises a catalyst bed section that is capable of contacting the feed stream with a catalyst in the presence of oxygen (O) and caustic at reaction conditions effective to oxidize the mercaptans and form a caustic-containing, sweetened liquid hydrocarbon-containing stream. A coalescing bed section is capable to coalesce and separate at least a portion of the caustic from the caustic-containing, sweetened liquid hydrocarbon-containing stream for forming a caustic-depleted, sweetened liquid hydrocarbon-containing product stream.

Apparatuses and methods for conversion of mercaptans

Methods and systems for treating caustic materials are disclosed. In one exemplary embodiment, a method for treating caustic materials includes the steps of providing a first caustic solution stream including phenolic constituents and naphthenic constituents, mixing the first caustic solution stream with an acid solution, and separating phenolic acids from the first caustic solution stream. The method further includes further mixing the first caustic solution stream with additional acid solution and separating naphthenic acids from the first caustic solution stream. Still further, the method includes providing a second caustic solution stream including sulfidic constituents, mixing the first caustic solution stream with the second caustic solution stream to form a combined caustic solution stream, and oxidizing the sulfidic constituents of the combined caustic solution stream.

Methods and systems for treating caustic materials

Embodiments of apparatuses and methods for treating mercaptans are provided. In one example, an apparatus comprises a vessel capable of receiving a feed stream that comprises liquid hydrocarbons and the mercaptans. The vessel comprises an extraction section that is capable of extracting a portion of the mercaptans from the feed stream to form a mercaptan-reduced, liquid hydrocarbon-containing stream. A catalyst bed section is capable of contacting the mercaptan-reduced, liquid hydrocarbon-containing stream with a catalyst in the presence of oxygen (O) and caustic at reaction conditions effective to oxidize a remaining portion of the mercaptans and form a sweetened liquid hydrocarbon-containing stream.

Apparatuses and methods for treating mercaptans

Methods and apparatuses are provided for producing low sulfur propane and butane. The method includes reacting a mercaptan in a washed feed stream with a caustic stream to produce a mercaptan salt in a rich caustic stream and a hydrocarbon treated stream. The mercaptan salt in the rich caustic stream is reacted with oxygen and water to produce a mixed caustic/disulfide stream, and the caustic and disulfides in the mixed caustic/disulfide stream are separated to produce a disulfide stream and the caustic stream. The hydrocarbon treated stream is fractionated to produce a propane stream, a butane stream, and a C5+ stream.

Methods and apparatuses for producing low sulfur propane and butane

Disclosed is a method for treating hydrocarbon streams containing mercaptan compounds including contacting a first, relatively light hydrocarbon stream including mercaptan compounds with a first alkaline caustic solution to remove the mercaptan compounds from the first hydrocarbon stream and generate a second alkaline caustic solution including mercaptan compounds and oxidizing the mercaptan compounds in the second alkaline caustic solution to generate a third alkaline solution including a first concentration of disulfide compounds. The method further includes separating a portion of the disulfide compounds in the third alkaline solution to form a fourth alkaline solution including a second concentration of disulfide compounds. Still further, the method includes contacting the fourth alkaline solution with a second, relatively heavy hydrocarbon stream including mercaptan compounds to remove the mercaptan compounds from the second hydrocarbon stream, remove the disulfide compounds from the fourth alkaline solution, and generate the first alkaline caustic solution.

Methods for treating hydrocarbon streams containing mercaptan compounds

One exemplary embodiment can be a process for oxidizing sulfides. The process can include passing an alkaline stream having about 1-about 30%, by weight, of an alkaline material and one or more sulfide compounds to a reaction zone having a metal phthalocyanine catalyst.

A method and apparatus for removing carbonyl sulfide (COS) from a hydrocarbon stream have been developed. The design allows removal of COS in the regeneration stream to less than 10 wppm, even at high concentrations of COS. The spent bed is regenerated using a portion of the treated product stream. The COS regeneration column provides increased contact and residence time.

Process for removing carbonyl sulfide from a hydrocarbon stream

One exemplary embodiment can be a process for removing carbonyl sulfide in a gas phase hydrocarbon stream. The process may include combining the gas phase hydrocarbon stream with another stream including an alkali and an alkanolamine, and passing the combined stream to a prewash zone including a vessel. The gas phase hydrocarbon may include carbonyl sulfide, and the alkali can include at least one of potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and ammonia. Usually, the vessel contains a contacting zone and a coalescing zone for removing the carbonyl sulfide.
