A rigid polyurethane foam formulation comprising a polyol composition comprising, by weight based on the weight of the polyol composition, more than 70% of at least one polyester polyol having an average hydroxyl number of from 150 to less than 300 mg KOH/g and an average functionality of at least 2; a blowing agent comprising water and an auxiliary blowing agent; a silicone copolymer surfactant; from 1% to 5% by weight based on the weight of the polyol composition, of a cyclic siloxane having a surface tension less than 21 dynes/cm at 25° C., wherein the weight ratio of the cyclic siloxane to the silicone copolymer surfactant is from 0.6 to less than 2.27; a catalyst, and optionally a flame retardant; and a polyisocyanate; such that the isocyanate index is in the range of from 180 to 500; a rigid polyurethane foam formed from the foam formulation; and a method of forming a rigid polyurethane foam.

Rigid polyurethane foam formulation and foam made therefrom

External thermal insulation composite systems described herein include a concrete or masonry wall and a multilayer thermal insulation board disposed on the concrete or masonry wall. The multilayer thermal insulation board includes at least one closed cell foam layer comprising polyurethane and polyisocyanurate having an open cell volume of less than 20% by volume according to ASTM D 6226 and at least one open cell foam layer comprising polyurethane and polyisocyanurate having an open cell volume of greater than 80% by volume according to ASTM D 6226.

Polyurethane-based insulation board

External thermal insulation composite systems described herein include a concrete or masonry wall and a thermal insulation board on the concrete or masonry wall. The thermal insulation board includes a polyurethane/polyisocyanurate foam having a density of less than 70 kg/maccording to ASTM D 1622. Methods of preparing the external thermal insulation composite systems and the thermal insulation boards are also described.

Glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane/polyisocyanurate foam insulation board

A polyisocyanate component, a polyurethane foaming system, and an article made therefrom, wherein the polyisocyanate component includes (a) a preformed mixture including an aromatic oxazolidone compound that is the reaction product of at least one aromatic epoxide and at least one first polyisocyanate having an average isocyanate functionality of no more than 2.7 and greater than 1.8, in the presence of at least one catalyst, the aromatic oxazolidone compound includes at least one free isocyanate group and at least one aromatic oxazolidone group, the aromatic oxazolidone group includes an aromatic group and an oxazolidone group, and (b) at least one second polyisocyanate has an average isocyanate functionality equal to or greater than 2.7 and less than 6.0. The second polyisocyanate is added to the preformed mixture to form the polyisocyanate component. The polyisocyanate component has a viscosity of no more than 4.0 Pa-sat 25&#xb0; C., an aromatic oxazolidone group content of 2 weight percent to 10 weight percent based on a total weight of the polyisocyanate component, and an average isocyanate functionality of from 1.8 to 6.0.

Polyisocyanate component, a polyurethane foaming system and an article made therefrom

An insulation box of an insulating barrier in a liquefied gas carrier includes a box structure that includes a bottom panel, a top panel, external pillars, and optionally at least one internal partition that define at least one void. The at least one void includes at least one multilayer insulation board. Each of the at least one multilayer insulation board includes at least one facer layer, at least one first polyurethane layer having a first density from 100 kg/mto 2000 kg/maccording to ASTM D 1622, and at least one second polyurethane layer having a second density of less than 100 kg/maccording to ASTM D 1622.

Insulation boxes

A continuous process for preparing insulation panels having thick (0.2 mm to 1 mm) metal facing panels and a fiber-reinforced polymer foam core is disclosed. In the process, a bottom metal facing panel is continuously supplied. A mat of reinforcing fibers and a foamable resin composition are applied to the bottom facing panel. A flexible barrier layer is applied atop the foamable resin composition, and the assembly is passed through nip rolls to compress the assembly and force the resin composition into the fiber mat. An adhesive layer and top metallic facing layer are then applied on top of the flexible barrier layer, and the resulting assembly is gauged and cured by passing it through a double band laminator.

Method for making fire-resistant foam insulation panels

The present invention discloses the production of panels by a discontinuous process. The panels are produced by injecting a polyisocyanurate foam forming composition into the mold cavity at reduced pressure. The combination of certain polyisocyanurate foam forming formulation and the reduced pressure in the mold cavity allows production of and resulting sandwich panels in a discontinuous process where the produced panels are characterized by improved fire resistance.

Production of polyisocyanurate foam panels

A continuous process for preparing insulation panels having thick (0.2 mm to 1 mm) metal facing panels and a fiber-reinforced polymer foam core is disclosed. In the process, a bottom metal facing panel () is continuously supplied. A mat () of reinforcing fibers and a foamable resin composition () are applied to the bottom facing panel. A flexible barrier layer () is applied atop the foamable resin composition, and the assembly is passed through nip rolls () to compress the assembly and force the resin composition into the fiber mat. An adhesive layer () and top metallic facing layer () are then applied on top of the flexible barrier layer, and the resulting assembly is gauged and cured by passing it through a double band laminator ().

Fiber-reinforced polyurethane structures are made with a polyol composition that contains a particulate filler such as calcium carbonate, in addition to the fibers. The polyol composition and the polyisocyanate composition are selected such that the polymer formed in their reaction has a calculated molecular weight between crosslinks (M) of from 300 to 420. The polyisocyanate component contains a urethane-modified MDI and/or a urethane-modified polymeric MDI.

Process for making long fiber-reinforced polyurethanes that contain particulate fillers

Fiber-reinforced polyurethane composite plates having a thickness of at least 12 mm contains at least 20% by weight of reinforcing fibers embedded in a polyurethane polymer matrix, which polyurethane polymer matrix has a calculated molecular weight between crosslinks of from 450 to 2500. The composite plates have excellent load-bearing properties and exhibit small permanent sets upon loading.

Fiber-reinforced polyurethane composite plates

The present invention relates to a flame-resistant composition, a fiber-reinforced polyurethane composite comprising the flame-resistant composition and the use thereof. In particular, the invention describes a flame-resistant polyurethane-composite forming composition and a combustion-modified, fiber-reinforced polyurethane composite comprising the flame-resistant polyurethane-composite forming composition, for applications in vehicles and for building products. The invention also describes a long-fiber injection molding process for the preparation of the combustion-modified, fiber-reinforced polyurethane composite. The fiber-reinforced polyurethane composite of the invention show improved fire-reaction behavior, measured as Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), and a reduced smoke production.

Flame resistant composition, fiber reinforced polyurethane based composite comprising the flame resistant composition and the use thereof

Polyurethane foams are made using a biuret-modified MDI and/or PMDI as the isocyanate component. The isocyanate is characterized by having a high content of biuret-containing oligomers and, preferably, a low proportion (if any) of biuret-urea oligomers. Flexible, resilient foams made using this biuret-modified isocyanate perform well on flammability tests such as the UNI 9175 CS. E. RF4 test, even without added flame retardants.
