This invention relates to mutant enzymes with enhanced properties and processes for oxidation of organic compound substrates using such enzymes.

Mutant enzymes

The present invention relates to ruthenium and osmium complexes of Formula [M(A)(B)(C)](X), per se and the use of ruthenium and osmium complexes of Formula I as redox mediators in electrochemical biosensors.

Redox mediators

The present application is generally directed to ruthenium or osmium containing complexes and their use as redox mediators in electrochemical biosensors.

A process for oxidizing a substrate which is an acyclic or cyclic terpene, or a cycloalkene; or a substituted derivative thereof, which process comprises oxidizing said compound with a mutant haem-containing enzyme, the mutant comprising the substitution of an amino acid in the active site by an amino acid with a less polar side-chain. The enzyme is typically P450or P450. Cells and libraries of cells in which the process can be carried out or which can be used to select advantageous mutant enzymes are also provided.

Process for oxidizing terpenes

Process of oxidising a substrate which is a halo aromatic compound, which process comprises oxidizing said substrate with a monooxygenase enzyme. The enzyme may be P450cam. The process may be carried out in cells, animals or plants.
