The invention relates to an aluminoborosilicate glass devoid of alkali, which has the following composition (in wt. % relative to the oxide content): SiO&#x3e;58-70; BO0.5-&#x3c;9; AlO10-25; MgO&#x3e;8-15; CaO 0-&#x3c;10; SrO 0-&#x3c;3; BaO 0-&#x3c;2; with MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO&#x3e;8-18; ZnO 0-&#x3c;2. Said glass is eminently suitable for use as substrate glass, both in display technology and in thin-film photovoltaic technology.

Alkali-free aluminoborosilicate glass, and uses thereof

Described is an alkali-free aluminoborosilicate glass with a viscosity of 10.sup.13 dPas at a temperature of above 700.degree.0 C., a processing temperature V.sub.A of less than 1220.degree.0 C., and very good chemical stability, which can be produced in a float unit and has the following composition, in % by weight based on oxide:

Lead- and barium-free crystal glass for the production of high-quality glasses and domestic articles, having high optical transmission, a refractive index n.sub.D of greater than 1.52, a density of at least 2.45 g/cm.sup.3, high hydrolytic resistance, good solarization resistance, and a K.sub.2 O+ZnO content of greater than 10% by weight, the glass system being based on an alkali-lime-silicate glass containing TiO.sub.2, ZrO.sub.2, Nb.sub.2 O.sub.3 and possibly Ta.sub.2 O.sub.5 and/or combinations thereof.

A biocompatible glass which can be melted using infra-red radiation contains, based on oxide, 65-68% by weight of SiO.sub.2, 0-3% by weight of Li.sub.2 O, 12-14% by weight of Na.sub.2 O, 2.5-4% by weight of K.sub.2 O, 15-17% by weight of .SIGMA. alkali metal oxides, 2-3% by weight of MgO, 4.2-5.5% by weight of CaO, 0-2% by weight of BaO, 3-4 % by weight of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-1.0 by weight of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and 2.7-4.1% of FeO. The glass, due to its infra-red meltability and its physiological accertability, is suitable for the encapsulation of sensitive materials, such as transponders or minitransmitters, which are implanted in a living body, or as ampoule glass for melt-encapsulation of sensitive substances.
