The method according to the invention calls upon a rotary electric machine () comprising a drive member () and a transmission member () of the belt or chain type, collaborating with the drive member and with the combustion engine () in order to start or restart the combustion engine, a tensioner () being provided to press against one strand () of the transmission member that extends between the rotary electric machine and the combustion engine. According to the invention, in a first stage, the rotary electric machine () supplies a predetermined reduced torque in the direction of starting for a predetermined duration in order to tension the transmission member () and then, in a second stage, the rotary electric machine () supplies a predetermined optimum torque for rapidly turning over the combustion engine () and causing it to start.

Method and device for starting or restarting thermal engine

A rotating electrical machine including a first member () capable of generating a magnetic field which rotates relative to the first member, and a second member () which is provided with a winding through which a current can flow, such that the rotating magnetic field drives the second member in rotation. An electrical value which is at least related to the current is measured () and the generation of the rotating magnetic field is started () at a time which is determined as a function of the electrical value which is measured. A method of controlling the machine is also disclosed.
