A sheet or web material being a subbed or unsubbed hydrophobic resin support or paper support coated with at least one hydrophobic resin layer having at least on one side an outermost antistatic layer containing colloidal silica, characterized in that the antistatic layer is free from any cationic surfactant and consists of at least 70% of weight of colloidal silica having an average particle size smaller thatn 7 nm and a surface area of at least 500 m2 per gram, the colloidal silica being present at a coverage of at least 50 mg per m2.

An aqueous copolyester dispersion suitable for the subbing of polyester film without use of organic solvents wherein the copolyester contains recurring ester groups derived from ethylene glycol and an acid mixture essentially consisting of 20 to 60 mole % of isophthalic acid, 6 to 10 mole % of sulphoisophthalic acid whose sulfo group is in salt from, 0.05 to 1 mole % of an aromatic polycarboxylic acid compound having at least three carboxylic acid groups, which compound is not capable of forming intramolecularly an anhydride and includes at least two carboxylated aromatic nuclei, and the balance of terephthalic acid; the copolyester has a glass transition temperature of at least 50.degree. C. and an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.15 to 0.45 dl/g when measured at 25.degree. C. in a mixture of phenol/o-dichlorobenzene (60/40 by volume).

The adherence of a hydrophilic layer containing a hydrophilic colloid binder upon the surface of a vinyl chloride polymer free of hydrophilic recurring units is improved by exposing the polymer surface to a corona discharge sufficient to satisfy a particular wetting test described in the specification, and colloidal silica is dispersed within the hydrophilic layer in a weight ratio range relative to the binder of 1:5-2:1.

Dimensionally stable polyester film supports with subbing layer thereon

The adherence of hydrophilic layers to dimensionally stable polyester films is improved by means of an adhesive layer by a process comprising applying the adhesive layer to an at most monoaxially stretched polyester film, stretching the thus covered polyester film biaxially or in a direction perpendicular to the first stretching direction and heat-setting the thus treated film at 180.degree.-225.degree. C, whereafter a hydrophilic coating is applied to the heat-set adhesive layer. This adhesive layer consists essentially of about 25-60% by weight of a chlorine-containing copolymer, 15-40% by weight of a butadiene copolymer, and 2-10% by weight of a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde or hydandoin-formaldehyde resin and is free of gelatin.

Polyester film coated with adhesive polymer composition

A process is provided for adhering an antistatic layer to a dimensionally stable polyester film support, e.g. a film of polyethylene terephthalate. To an unstretched or only monoaxially stretched polyester film is applied an antistatic layer from an aqueous coating composition. After drying of the antistatic layer it is stretched biaxially or in a direction perpendicular to the first stretching operation, together with the polyester film support and thereafter the polyester film is heat-setted. The aqueous coating composition comprises 30 to 80% by weight of an electroconductive product, 10 to 40% by weight of a stretch-improving agent and 10 to 40% by weight of an inert filler material. The polyester film support may be provided on its opposite side with a subbing layer and one or more light-sensitive gelatin silver halide emulsion layers.

Process of applying antistatic coating compositions to polyester films

In a coating method for preparing a multi-layer material for use in the graphic arts or in X-ray photography in which a web of a polyester film support has applied to one of its sides to form an anchoring layer an aqueous binder latex containing at least one copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters, vinyl esters, or butadiene, the anchoring layer is heated during drying or heat-setting to a temperature above the glass transition temperature of said copolymeric binder and is conveyed while hot by means of conveying rollers contacting said anchoring layer surface, and at least one gelatin-containing hydrophilic layer is applied to the anchoring layer, the tendency of said anchoring layer to adhere while hot to said conveying rollers or to a contiguous anchoring layer is reduced by incorporating an organo-silane compound in the anchoring layer in the amount of about 5-100% by weight of the copolymer binder.

Method of coating multi-layer graphic film

The adhesion of hydrophilic layers on a dimensionally stable polyester film support is improved by applying after longitudinal stretching of the polyester film a single adhesive layer thereon. The thus covered polyester film is stretched in transverse direction and heat-setted at 180.degree.-220.degree. C. The adhesive layer comprises 30 to 80 % by weight of a chlorine-containing copolymer, 5 to 30 % by weight of gelatin, 5 to 40 % by weight of a plasticizer for the gelatin and 0 to 30 % by weight of a metal-complexing antistatic agent. The polyester film may be a film of polyethylene terephthalate and the hydrophilic layer applied to the single adhesive layer may be a light-sensitive gelatin silver halide emulsion layer.

Adhesion of hydrophilic layers on polyester film

Hydrophilic layers are made to adhere to dimensionally stable polyester film supports by applying to an unstretched or only longitudinally stretched polyester film an adhesive layer from an aqueous coating composition comprising a chlorine-containing copolymer formed of 45 to 99.5 % by weight of at least one of the monomers vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride, 0.5 to 10 % by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or of N-vinyl pyrrolidone, and 0 to 54.5 % by weight of at least one monomer taken from acrylamides, methacrylamides, esters of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and maleic acid, and N-alkyl maleimides. Immediately thereafter, without drying of the adhesive layer, a subbing layer is applied thereto from an aqueous gelatin solution comprising a plasticizer for the gelatin. After drying of the two layers, they are biaxially or transversally stretched together with the polyester film support, and heat-setted. Finally a hydrophilic layer is applied to the subbing layer. The polyester film may be a film of polyethylene terephthalate and the hydrophilic layer applied to the subbing layer may be a light-sensitive gelatin silver halide emulsion layer.
